Re-Awakened :I Ascend as an SSS-Ranked Dragon Summoner

The air had gone from easy banter to something colder in the space of one shrieking pass.

”Ships keep buzzing us,” Noah said, watching another sleek vessel streak beneath them and bank hard around a spire, and Storm let out a short, irritated shriek at it before it even fully cleared, wings snapping wider like the insult demanded a response.

”They are not used to sharing airspace with something that large,” Hibanna said, one hand braced against Storm’s foreleg plating, the other keeping the trident steady across her lap. Her eyes hadn’t left him since they’d climbed, tracking every twitch of muscle beneath the scales like she was cataloguing something she’d never expected to see up close.

”He’s harmless,” Noah said. ”Mostly. To people he likes.”

”Our cross cultural archives mention creatures from Earth,” Hibanna said. ”Horses. Large beasts of burden your people rode into war centuries ago.” She glanced sideways at Storm’s wingspan, at the lightning still crackling faint along his tail from the last near miss. ”Nothing about this.”

Noah laughed, low, and tightened his arm around her waist as Storm banked to avoid another oncoming vessel.

”He’s not a beast,” Noah said. ”He’s my friend. His name’s Storm.” He patted the scales beneath them, and Storm rumbled something almost pleased despite himself. ”And where I’m from, riding around with a dragon still turns heads. Not everyone gets one of these.”

Hibanna didn’t answer that right away, something working behind her eyes that looked less like skepticism now and more like recalculation.

”We are approaching the bridge,” she said instead. ”We will need one of our ships to pass beyond it.”

”No,” Noah said. ”We won’t.”

He leaned forward, tapped Storm once along the side, and that single point of contact was enough. Lightning surged visibly across every scale at once, tail sizzling with it, wings snapping taut.

”Hold on, Princess.”

Storm accelerated.

The city blurred past in streaks of light, every ship in their path scattering out of the way in a panic that Noah barely registered, and ahead of them a shimmering barrier hung suspended in the water, translucent and rippling, open ocean visible beyond it in a wash of deep blue.

BOOOM!!

Storm hit it at full speed and didn’t slow down for it at all.

A portal opened, deep purple, swallowing them whole in an instant.

---

Back at the swamp, sunlight scattering through the canopy exactly where they’d first entered the water hours earlier, the same purple portal tore open above the still surface.

Storm shot out of it like a meteor.

Noah had barely registered the return to open air when the sky above the swamp darkened, and the first pod came screaming down through the clouds, trailing black smoke, impact throwing water and mud in every direction. Then another. Then three more, scattered across the treeline in a rough perimeter, each one splitting open the moment it hit ground.

One horns first, a dozen of them, low and fast, scrambling out of the wreckage on all fours before straightening up. Behind them, two horns rose slower, looking around and painting directions for the one horns.

”They cannot reach it,” Hibanna said, voice gone flat and hard. ”If even one of them reaches open water, our bridge becomes compromised.”

She jumped.

No hesitation, no warning, just off Storm’s back in one clean motion, falling in a tight spin toward the swamp below, trident held close against her body.

Her weapon whooshed as she fell, crystal erupting straight up out of the ground to meet her, lattice folding around her in a shape like something blooming, closing over her completely a half second before she hit the earth.

BOOM!!

The crystal shattered outward, and Hibanna came out of the center of it already moving, shards flying in every direction, each one finding a one horn’s skull or chest and punching straight through, three of them dropping in the same instant without a sound.

A fourth one horn broke from the treeline and came at her low and fast. She didn’t step back. She swung the trident in a brutal arc, crystal blooming along its path in a wave, and the construct impaled the creature clean through before it finished its charge, the Harbinger’s own momentum driving the spike deeper.

Above, Noah watched the pods keep dropping, more black shapes tearing through cloud cover.

”They’ll keep coming even after every pod’s down,” he said, mostly to himself, eyes scanning the treeline, the ridge beyond it, anything that could be hiding a larger hull. ”Unless I find the mothership.”

He knew it had to be here. Somewhere on this island, tucked into rock or buried under canopy, there was a ship big enough to have launched all of this.

He leapt.

No brace, no cushioning of the fall, just Excaliburn already forming in his hand as the ground rushed up, void-dark edge catching what little light made it through the smoke overhead, and he landed in a full sprint without breaking stride, the blade already moving.

The first Harbinger, a one horn cresting the treeline just ahead of him, lost its head clean before it finished turning to face him, the void-coated edge passing through flesh and bone like neither had ever existed.

Noah didn’t stop moving.

He dropped the sword hand low, closed the gap to a second one horn in half a second, and drove a precise strike into a point just beneath its jaw, the impact tiny and controlled, and the creature’s entire nervous system seized as a needle thin hole punched clean through it, exiting the back of its skull in a straight, surgical line.

VPT. No wasted force. Just the exact point, every time.

A third came at him from the side, claws raking for his ribs, and Noah caught the strike on his forearm, redirected it past him, and answered with a palm strike to the sternum that folded the creature in half and dropped it where it stood, another pinhole wound cored clean through its chest.

He moved between them like water finding the fastest path downhill, fast enough that the fight barely resembled combat anymore, more like a sequence he’d already solved and was simply executing.

Two more one horns flanked him. He raised his free hand, fingers curling into the shape of a barrel, and violet light gathered along his knuckles in a tight coil.

Void Barrage.

Dozens of bullets tore from his palm in a single continuous stream, each one erasing whatever it touched on contact, no wound, no blood, just absence where flesh had been a fraction of a second earlier. Both one horns came apart mid-stride, entire sections of their bodies simply gone, and what was left of them dropped without ever understanding what had happened.

A two horn broke through the smoke ahead, larger, slower, already regenerating a gash along its shoulder that Hibanna’s crystal must have opened somewhere behind him.

Noah didn’t wait for it to finish healing.

He closed the distance in a blink, void energy folding space around him for a fraction of a second, and reappeared inside the creature’s guard, fist already cocked.

Null Strike.

His fist connected with its skull and the skull simply stopped existing, the creature’s entire head erased in the same motion that ended its swing, the rest of its body collapsing forward with nothing left above the neck.

He barely paused before the next target found him.

Across the clearing, Storm tore through a cluster of one horns in a blur of white and blue, lightning arcing between each strike, a blizzard field rolling out from his wingbeats that froze the ground solid in a widening ring. A one horn tried to flank him and simply vanished into a streak of motion and current, Storm already three targets ahead of it by the time it hit the ground in pieces.

Hibanna’s soldiers arrived in force now, crystal-armored figures dropping from transports overhead, trident-wielding and disciplined, cutting into the perimeter from the flank Noah hadn’t covered yet, but Noah’s focus stayed narrow, tracking Hibanna through the chaos every few seconds without meaning to, watching her drive another crystal spike through a two horn’s throat with the same brutal efficiency she’d shown from the very first kill.

A one horn lunged at Noah from behind.

He didn’t turn. Didn’t need to. His hand shot back without looking, closed around its throat mid-leap, and a pulse of void energy through his palm erased the connective tissue holding its head to its spine in one clean motion. It dropped before it finished its own trajectory.

He scanned the treeline again, breathing controlled, body barely registering the exertion.

Somewhere on this island, buried in rock or canopy, something bigger was still sitting there, feeding this. Every pod that dropped, every wave that kept coming, all of it traced back to a single point he hadn’t found yet.

He just needed to find it before it decided to stop hiding.

Noah blinked to Hibanna’s side mid-fight, purple afterimage folding in on itself as he reappeared right next to her, void-coated sword already lowering.

”We need to search the island,” he said. ”Something bigger’s hiding here, feeding all of this. I need eyes off me for a minute.”

She didn’t argue, already turning toward a nearby cluster of her soldiers, trident raised. ”Clear a path east, toward the ridge. Hold the water line. Do not let anything through.”

The soldiers broke formation and reformed instantly, crystal armor catching the smoke-dimmed light as they shifted their perimeter, carving open a corridor through the chaos.

Noah looked at Hibanna.

”Princess. Follow my lead.”

He reached down, and violet light gathered around his boots, Void Striders forming plate by plate, energy hissing faint against the mud. He took her hand.

”Hold on.”

They were gone before she finished inhaling.

The world dissolved into streaks of green and grey, the swamp blurring past at a speed her eyes clearly weren’t built to track, and Noah felt her grip lock down hard around his fingers, felt the half second of pure disorientation ripple through her before her obvious military training kicked back in.

A one horn broke from the tree line ahead of them, directly in their path.

Noah tossed her.

Not far, not violent, just enough to put her outside the blur for the fraction of a second it took her to reorient, trident already swinging before her feet fully found the ground, crystal blooming along the shaft and driving straight through the creature’s chest before it registered what had interrupted its charge.

Noah was already gone.

To anything watching without contact, there was no more Noah, just a smear of violet moving through smoke and mud at impossible speed, and wherever it passed, Harbingers dropped. A two horn’s leg buckled out from under it, the joint simply gone, erased mid-stride. A cluster of one horns scattered as something tore through the middle of them and kept moving before any single one could react, three of them falling in the same breath.

Hibanna spun, trident up, and found nothing but empty air where Noah had been a heartbeat ago.

Then he was there again, hand closing around hers before she’d finished her turn, and they were moving once more, the swamp streaming past in unbroken color.

Another threat. He released her hand mid-stride, and this time she came out of the blur already swinging, catching a lunging one horn across the throat with the crystal-wreathed edge of her trident before it could close the distance, her own momentum carrying the follow-through into a second creature behind it.

Noah reappeared just as she finished the second kill, closed his hand around hers, and they were gone again.

It went like that. Toss, strike, blur, return, toss, strike, blur, return, a rhythm neither of them had planned but that clicked into place somewhere around the fourth exchange, Hibanna’s trident finding openings the instant she landed, Noah’s void-coated form dismantling anything unlucky enough to be caught in his path between each handoff.

By the time they slowed, the swamp behind them had gone quiet in a wide corridor stretching all the way back toward the water, bodies scattered in clean, efficient lines.

They came to a stop at the base of a mountain, dense rock rising sheer out of the treeline, canopy thinning out where the ground turned to stone.

Noah let go of her hand.

Hibanna stood there a moment, chest rising and falling, color high across her cheeks, trident still humming faintly.

”I must confess,” she said, breathless, something almost startled in her voice. ”You are a man of many talents, Noah Eclipse.”

Noah smiled. ”I try my best.”

He didn’t get the chance to enjoy it.

Movement caught his eye high above them, a shape breaking off the mountain’s upper ridge, launching outward in a long, deliberate arc that carried it clean back over the treeline toward the water they’d just cleared.

Noah’s smile dropped.

”That’s a three horn.”

Bigger than anything they’d fought so far, moving with a weight that made the branches below it bend just from the air it displaced.

The three horn’s head turned as it passed overhead, one long look thrown straight down at both of them.

”You,” it said, voice carrying loud enough to shake loose bark off the nearest trees. ”The soldier with the black blade.”

Hibanna’s grip tightened on her trident. ”They know you?”

”Not this one specifically.” Noah kept his eyes on it as it continued its arc toward the water. ”But Harbingers talk to each other somehow. Hive mind, near as I can tell, or something close enough to it. Kruel knew to avoid anything purple the second we started fighting, first time we ever crossed paths. Same with the Widow. Neither of them had ever seen me before that day, and both of them already knew not to let this—” he lifted Excaliburn slightly ”—touch them.”

”So it already knows what will happen if it lets you close.”

”Yeah.” Noah said, ”Which usually means it’s going to try very hard not to let that happen.”

Noah watched the three horn continue its arc, angling now toward the shimmering water beyond the treeline, exactly where Hibanna’s soldiers were holding the line.

”It’s going for the bridge,” he said.

Hibanna’s expression hardened, all the warmth from a moment ago folding away into something colder, more immediate.

”Then we stop it before it reaches it,” she said, already moving.

Noah fell in beside her, Void Striders humming back to life beneath him, Excaliburn’s void-dark edge catching the last of the smoke-filtered light as he broke into a run.
