Re-Awakened :I Ascend as an SSS-Ranked Dragon Summoner

”Please may the chamber salute the Supreme General—”

”No need. Sit, everyone,” Hiro Shima said, already taking his seat before the same old gathering of bigwigs that had spent several years dictating the affairs of human defense from this very room.

The chamber settled, slower than usual, chairs scraping, tablets clicking off standby, and something in the air felt different before he’d said a single word about why he’d called them all here.

Kross sat first, watching him with the particular attention of someone reading a mood before reading a report. Hendricks kept his usual flat expression, unreadable as ever. Thorne’s jaw was already tight. Roderick leaned back in his chair with the posture of a man expecting to disagree with whatever came next. Korsakov had his tablet open but wasn’t looking at it. Cassandra sat with her hands folded, still, waiting.

”I’m not here to discuss the beast surge today,” the General said. ”I’m not here to discuss patrol rotations or resource allocation or any of the standard business this chamber usually runs through on a given week.”

He looked around the room slowly.

”I’m here to discuss a matter of contention that this institution has never properly closed,” he said. ”Eclipse. And Arthur.”

Thorne’s jaw tightened further.

”Supreme General,” Hendricks said carefully, ”with respect, that matter was resolved years ago. Eclipse invoked Article 47. They left the institution’s authority. Whatever grievance existed between us and that team was settled at the moment of their departure.”

”It wasn’t settled,” the General said. ”It was buried. There’s a difference, and I think everyone in this room actually knows that difference, even if nobody’s said it out loud in a formal setting.”

Nobody answered right away.

”Let me lay out the facts plainly,” the General said. ”Years ago, a team of young EDF assets, then designated Pathfinder Team Seven, Noah Eclipse, Kelvin Pithon, Sophie Reign, Diana Frost, Lucas Grey, and Lyra Davids, reported the existence of a threat they encountered during their operations. A figure with power beyond any classification this institution had a framework for. They called him Arthur. Or, at various points, the eighth ancestor, the eighth family, terms that shifted as their understanding of what they’d encountered deepened.”

He let that sit a moment.

”This institution’s official response,” he continued, ”was to dismiss the report as unverified, exaggerated, or fabricated outright. And when the team persisted, when they continued raising the alarm through proper channels, this institution disciplined them for insubordination rather than investigating the claim itself.”

”There was no verifiable evidence at the time,” Roderick said. ”You’re speaking as though we simply chose not to believe six cadets on principle. We required corroboration. That’s not institutional failure, that’s standard procedure for any claim of that magnitude.”

”Standard procedure,” the General repeated. ”Let’s actually examine what standard procedure produced, then.”

He pulled up a display.

”Lilivil,” he said. ”An entire world, home to a civilization of elves numbering in the millions, destroyed by a force this institution has never officially classified, because officially classifying it would have required acknowledging that Team Seven’s reports about Arthur’s reach and capability were accurate all along. To this day, the only account we have of what happened there comes from that same team, the one we discredited.”

Silence stretched.

”After that,” the General continued, ”the same team, now operating independently as Eclipse, traveled to Raiju Prime alongside the Grey family, one of the eight original bloodlines this institution has known about for considerably longer than it’s ever formally disclosed to the public, and together they tracked and engaged the very threat we told them didn’t exist. They found evidence. They found captive original family heads Arthur had been holding for reasons we still don’t fully understand. And when credible sources brought that evidence back to us, to our doorsteps, this institution’s official position was that whatever Arthur represented was original family business. Not ours. Nothing to do with humanity’s broader defense.”

”That determination wasn’t unreasonable at the time,” Kross said quietly.

”I’m not finished,” the General said. ”Because now we have One.”

He let the name sit in the room.

”One,” he said, ”who is, by every credible account we’ve since gathered, Arthur’s direct successor. Who soloed the Sterling homeworld’s capital, killed their entire ruling council, and left nothing standing behind him. Who conquered a species other powers considered too hostile to bother approaching. Who shattered a Conclave army in half an hour. Who I personally engaged in combat on Vel’kai and can tell this chamber, without exaggeration, is the single most dangerous individual threat I have encountered in forty years of service!!”

Nobody spoke.

”And because of Arthur’s unchecked activities,” the General said, ”whatever this figure ultimately was, activities we deemed not our business, we now sit one miscalculation away from a war with the Conclave itself. Fourteen species who no longer distinguish between what humanity does and what humanity fails to prevent.”

”That’s a significant leap,” Hendricks said. ”Attributing the entire Conclave situation to a single institutional decision made years ago.”

”Is it a leap,” the General said, ”or is it simply the actual chain of consequence, laid out plainly instead of comfortably?”

Hendricks didn’t answer.

”I want this chamber to sit with something,” the General said. ”There are eight original families. Not seven, as this institution’s public materials have maintained for decades. Eight. Grey. Ares. Sterling. Veyras. Marricks. Durns. Leviticus. And Arthur, who was never one of the eight by birthright, but built himself into something equivalent through means this institution never bothered to investigate seriously until his own son was already tearing through Conclave space.”

”Were the originals forthcoming with us about any of this?” Zhang asked. ”Because from where I’m sitting, this reads less like our failure and more like generations of powerful families keeping their own affairs quiet from the institution that’s supposed to coordinate humanity’s collective defense.”

”Both things are true,” the General said. ”The originals have their own history of secrecy, their own reasons for keeping their politics insulated from public defense structures. I’m not here to absolve them of that. But we had a direct report. From our own personnel. Young, yes. Unproven, yes. But direct, specific, and, as it turns out, accurate in every material respect. And we chose institutional comfort over investigation.”

”So what would you have had us do, sir supreme general, sir,” Thorne said, finally speaking, sharp. ”Deploy fleet resources based on the unverified testimony of cadets barely out of academy, chasing a threat with no corroborating intelligence, on the word of six kids who’d clearly been through something traumatic and were, by every reasonable measure available to us at the time, describing something that sounded like myth?”

”I’d have had us investigate,” the General said. ”Quietly. Discreetly. Without disciplining them for raising it. There’s a wide gap between deploying the fleet and disciplining the people who brought us the warning. We chose the second option and skipped the first entirely.”

Thorne’s jaw worked, but he didn’t have an answer ready.

”I’ve read the disciplinary record,” the General said. ”Noah Eclipse was court-martialed. Threatened with separation from service entirely. His team was pressured to distance themselves from him or face consequences of their own. That’s not caution, General. That’s punishment for being right before we were ready to hear it.”

”With respect,” Cassandra said, quiet but firm, ”I raised concerns about how that situation was handled at the time. I was overruled.”

”I remember,” the General said, looking at her. ”You were one of the few voices in this chamber who took it seriously.”

Cassandra didn’t say anything else, but something in her posture eased slightly, some old vindication finally landing after however many years of carrying it alone.

”I want to be plain with all of you,” the General said, standing now, moving to the center of the chamber floor. ”We are the people of Earth’s last line of coordinated defense. That is the entire purpose this institution was built around, generations ago, born from the need for hope that a species facing extinction desperately required. And I am telling you, as the man who currently holds this seat, that we have failed that purpose. Not through malice. Through comfort. Through the slow, quiet rot that happens when protocol becomes more important than the emergency the protocol was built to serve.”

He looked around the room, meeting eyes one at a time.

”There are powers in this universe we have not yet acknowledged,” he said. ”Original bloodlines older than our written history. Entities like Arthur, capable of building an empire across timelines while we argued about jurisdiction. A boy named One who I personally fought and could not finish, who is out there right now, recovering, planning, and we had twenty four hours left on a Conclave deadline that could end with an armada in our own orbit.”

”So what are you asking this chamber to actually do,” Korsakov said. ”Concretely. Not philosophically.”

”I’m asking this chamber to stop treating Eclipse as a faction we tolerate and start treating them as what they actually are,” the General said. ”The single most capable, most proven defense asset humanity currently has, built by people this institution failed, who chose to build something better anyway rather than let that failure define what they became.”

”You want formal reconciliation,” Hendricks said.

”I want honesty,” the General said. ”Reconciliation is a conversation for another day, and it belongs to them to accept or refuse, not to us to declare. What I want today is for this chamber to stop pretending our hands are clean in how we got here.”

Nobody spoke for a long moment.

”My only hope,” the General said, quieter now, ”is that we rise to the greatness this institution was actually born from. Not the greatness of protocol followed correctly. The greatness of hope answered, the way it was meant to be answered, before we let comfort convince us that caution and cowardice were the same thing.”

He looked around the room one last time.

”That’s all,” he said. ”Session’s adjourned.”

---

Outside the chamber, in the corridor leading back toward the Vanguard division’s offices, Miss Brooks walked a half step behind Cassie, Volkov, and Mei, none of them saying much until they’d cleared the doors fully.

”Well,” Mei said finally, a small, genuine smile breaking through. ”That happened.”

”Took him long enough,” Cassie said, arms crossed, though there was real satisfaction under the edge in her voice. ”I believed them back then. Every word. I said as much in three separate meetings and got told to keep my opinions to myself.”

”He did what he had to do,” Volkov said. ”Bureaucracies move slow because moving slow protects them from mistakes most of the time. This was the exception that proved it wrong.”

They walked a few more steps before Cassie glanced back at Brooks, who hadn’t said a single word since leaving the chamber.

”You’re quiet,” Cassie said. ”Aren’t you going to weigh in?”

Brooks stopped walking.

”For what purpose,” she said.

The other three turned to look at her.

”I spent years teaching that boy everything I knew,” she said. ”Watched him grow into something none of the material I was given ever prepared me to teach. And this institution punished him for telling the truth, then spent years pretending that punishment was reasonable, and now stands here calling it a lesson learned.” She shook her head slowly. ”The rot isn’t in one bad decision. It’s in the old heads who keep choosing protocol over people, generation after generation, because protocol never has to answer for the cost the way a person does.”

”Brooks—” Volkov started.

”I’ve tendered my resignation,” she said. ”Full separation. From the EDF and every affiliation attached to it.”

Nobody said anything for a moment.

”You’re going to join him,” Cassie said slowly. ”Aren’t you?. You wish to join Noah.”

Brooks looked at her.

”I taught that boy from the day he first walked into Academy Twelve,” she said. ”Watched him grow strong. Powerful. Mature into someone I genuinely don’t have the full measure of anymore. I always knew he was destined for something enormous.” She paused. ”What I never knew was whether I’d get to be part of it, or whether I’d spend the rest of my career on the wrong side of that history, the way this institution has been.”

”And now?” Mei said quietly.

”Now I think it isn’t too late to correct that,” Brooks said.

She turned and walked toward the nearest transport bay without waiting for a response.

The three of them stood there watching her go, and none of them said the thing that all three were clearly thinking, that between them, not one of them actually believed she was wrong.

Somewhere off around the Ark, specifically the office areas, Hendricks walked back toward his own quarters after just stepping down from a transport, the discussion with the other commanders still churning in his head.

”Sometimes I wonder why he’s still on the seat,” he muttered to himself, placing his fingerprint against the door panel.

The lock cycled open.

He stepped through, already loosening his collar, mind still half in the chamber replaying the argument he hadn’t quite won, and froze the instant the door slid shut behind him.

A woman sat in his own chair, behind his own desk, as though it had always belonged to her.

He knew who she was immediately. Everyone on the Ark knew who she was, even those who’d never spoken to her directly, because there was only one woman who moved through this station with that particular ease, that particular quiet authority nobody had ever formally granted her and nobody had ever thought to question.

The EDF wasn’t a traditional military body, not really. It hadn’t been for decades. The structure existed, ranks and chains of command and disciplinary codes, but underneath all of it ran something closer to a court, alliances and favors and the slow accumulation of soft power that came from proximity to whoever actually held the throne. And the Supreme General, by every practical measure, was that throne. The single most powerful human being alive, the man every officer in this station ultimately answered to whether they liked it or not.

Which made his wife, by simple extension, the closest thing humanity’s fractured governance still had to a first lady.

She wore a dark fur coat despite the Ark’s carefully regulated temperature, red lipstick sharp and precise against pale skin, and her eyes, when they found his, didn’t blink.

Hendricks felt sweat break out along his hairline before he’d even fully processed that she was real, sitting there, in his office, waiting for him.

He bowed his head immediately, deep and fast.

”Your Excellency,” he said, voice tighter than he wanted it to sound. ”Forgive me. I wasn’t informed you’d be visiting the office areas today, I would have—”

”You would have prepared something,” she said, her voice smooth, unhurried, carrying the particular warmth she always seemed to carry in public without it ever quite reaching her eyes. ”I know. That’s exactly why I didn’t announce myself.”

He stayed bowed, unsure if straightening was permitted yet, his heart hammering against his ribs for reasons he couldn’t fully name.

”How may I be of service,” he said.

”I came to see you,” she said, ”because I need your help.”

Hendricks lifted his head slightly, still not fully upright, confusion cutting through some of the fear.

”Me,” he said. ”What could I possibly offer the first lady that isn’t already within your reach.”

Her smile widened, slow, patient.

”Well,” she said. ”Since you asked.”

She rose from his chair, unhurried, crossing the small office with the fur coat trailing behind her, and stopped close enough that he could smell something faint and unfamiliar beneath whatever perfume she wore.

”There’s something I’d like to do,” she said. ”And I think you’d be of considerable use to me in accomplishing it.”

He kept his head bowed, sweat now running freely along his temple.

”Of course,” he said. ”I’ll simply need a better understanding of what Your Excellency requires, so I can put things in proper order for you. But whatever it is you want, I’m here to serve.”

Her smile sharpened at the edges into something with genuinely delicious proportion.

”Of course,” she said. ”As you should.”
