Re-Awakened :I Ascend as an SSS-Ranked Dragon Summoner

Noah walked through the academy grounds, his thoughts churning like storm clouds. Around him, snippets of conversation all circled back to the same topic—the upcoming competition. Even Miss Brooks had gotten caught up in the fever, spending half of homeroom discussing how Class 1B needed representation in the cardinal level matches.

’Everyone’s so focused on proving themselves,’ he mused, watching a group of second-years practicing combat forms in the distance. ’As if the Harbingers care which school you graduated from when they’re trying to tear you apart.’

The irony wasn’t lost on him. Humanity had united against an existential threat, yet here they were, still desperately clawing for recognition, for that extra edge over their peers. The academies had become pressure cookers of ambition, each student trying to prove they deserved their spot in humanity’s last line of defense.

His brooding came to an abrupt halt as he rounded the corner into the main courtyard. There, beneath the shade of an ancient oak tree, stood Sophie surrounded by her usual entourage of third-year girls. The afternoon sun caught in her hair, making it shine like polished copper.

The moment she spotted him, her face lit up with recognition. Her friends, ever attuned to the social dynamics at play, dispersed with practiced casualness. Some headed toward the library, others toward the training grounds, leaving Sophie alone by the tree.

Noah opened his mouth, the apology he’d rehearsed ready on his tongue, but before he could speak, Sophie crossed the distance between them in three quick steps and wrapped her arms around him.

”Where have you been?” she demanded, her voice muffled against his shoulder. ”I looked everywhere after you disappeared from the gala. When we heard about Jayden’s crew destroying the east wing, I thought—” She pulled back, scanning his face. ”I was worried sick.”

The genuine concern in her eyes made something in his chest tighten. They’d only been dating for a week, but sometimes it felt like she’d always been there, always cared this much.

”I’m fine,” he assured her, managing a small smile. ”Just needed to clear my head.” Excluding the part where his parents sent a coin to him, but he pushed that thought aside. No need to burden her with family drama she couldn’t fix. ”Nothing to do with Jayden or the east wing, I promise.”

Sophie studied him for a moment longer before nodding, though he could tell she wasn’t entirely convinced. ”If you say so.”

”Hey,” he said, eager to change the subject, ”have you eaten? We could grab something from—”

”Actually,” she cut in, a slight hesitation in her voice, ”there’s something else. I wasn’t the only one looking for you yesterday.” She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear—a nervous habit he’d started to recognize. ”Lucas was asking about you too.”

Noah’s eyebrows rose. Lucas Grey, the academy’s number one, his unexpected friend since that nightmare in Cannadah. The memory of fighting back-to-back against the Harbingers flashed through his mind—the kind of experience that forged bonds stronger than steel.

”Lucas?” He frowned. ”Did he say what it was about?”

Sophie shook her head. ”Just that he needed to talk to you. Soon.”

Noah considered this, unconsciously flexing his fingers as he thought about his morning breakthrough with Chi. Whatever Lucas wanted, it would have to wait until he’d processed everything Master Anng had taught him.

”Walk with me?” he asked, extending his hand. ”I should probably find him before he decides to blow up another wall.”

Sophie laughed, slipping her hand into his. ”Can’t have that. The repair crews are already working overtime from last night.”

They set off across the courtyard together, their joined hands swinging slightly between them. Above them, the afternoon sun painted long shadows across the academy grounds, while in the distance, the sound of combat training provided a constant reminder of why they were all here.

But for now, with Sophie’s hand in his and the warmth of the day around them, Noah allowed himself to forget about void domains, ancient energy, and coins from space. Sometimes, he was learning, the most important moments were the quiet ones between the storms.

Even if those moments never seemed to last quite long enough.

Sometimes Noah still had to remind himself this wasn’t a dream—that Sophie Reign, the girl who had half the senior class tripping over themselves, had chosen him. Not some hotshot from 1A or a decorated upperclassman, but him. A first-year from 1B who spent more time in his own head than socializing.

He caught her stealing glances at him as they walked, her smile carrying that same hint of pleasant disbelief that matched his own thoughts. Like neither of them had quite figured out how they’d ended up here, but neither was complaining either.

The year three teaching complex loomed ahead, its modern architecture a stark contrast to the traditional design of the dojo he’d left behind. Combat class was just letting out, students filtering through the glass doors with sweat-soaked training gear and the particular kind of exhaustion that came from pushing limits.

Lucas emerged with Amanda, his white-blonde hair darker with perspiration, his training uniform bearing the marks of intense sparring. Noah’s eyes darted to Sophie, wondering why she wasn’t among them. Had she really skipped class just to find him? The thought made something warm settle in his chest, even as his conscience pricked at being the reason for her absence.

The moment Lucas spotted them, his expression shifted—subtle, but Noah caught it. He leaned over to Amanda, exchanging what looked like more than just casual words. The blonde nodded, quickening her pace toward them. She wrapped Sophie in a quick hug, whispering something that made both girls share a knowing look before heading off together.

Sophie paused just long enough to press a kiss to Noah’s lips, the gesture so natural it made his heart skip. Then she was gone, leaving him alone with the academy’s number one.

”So, number one,” Noah said, keeping his tone light despite the unusual tension in the air. ”What’s up?”

Lucas’s response was characteristically brief: ”Follow me.”

They fell into step together, their footfalls echoing in the emptying hallway. Noah studied his friend from the corner of his eye, noting the rigid set of his shoulders, the tightness around his jaw. This wasn’t the Lucas who’d fought beside him in Cannadah, trading quips even as they faced down Harbingers.

This was someone else. Someone coiled tight with... something.

The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken words. Lucas had always been the quiet type, sure, but this was different. This felt less like his usual comfortable silence and more like the calm before a storm—the kind that set every nerve on edge.

Noah’s mind raced through possibilities. Had something happened after the gala? Was this about Jayden? About the competition? Or maybe—his thoughts darkened—had there been another Micah incident?

This was the kind of serious that made even the academy’s strongest student look... worried.

And that? That was enough to make Noah’s combat-honed instincts start humming with warning.
