Ascension Online: My Beasts Evolve infinitely

Ryan’s breath caught as Cynthia crossed the last few feet toward him, something cold and final settling into her expression the kind of look that suggested whatever composure she’d been holding onto all evening had finally run out.

He braced for whatever came next, eyes squeezed shut, every muscle locked tight against the chair binding him in place.

Somewhere in the back of his mind, past the fear, a small, bitter voice kept asking how it had come to this bound in the dark, waiting on someone else’s mercy, after everything he’d promised he’d become.

It never landed.

Instead, a sound tore out of her that didn’t belong to threats or fury something raw, sudden, cut off almost as soon as it started.

Ryan’s eyes snapped open.

Blood bloomed across the front of Cynthia’s blouse, spreading fast, dark against the fabric.

Her expression had gone slack, confused, like her body understood what had just happened a full second before her mind caught up.

Something had gone through her clean back to front, silent, invisible, leaving no visible weapon behind to explain it.

She swayed once, hand fumbling toward the wound like she could hold it closed by will alone, and collapsed forward across the arm of his chair.

Ryan stared, frozen, the terror in his chest curdling into something closer to primal panic. The room around him was empty.

No one. No sound, no shape, no explanation for what he’d just watched happen three feet away from his own face.

A ghost. It has to be a

He opened his mouth, the beginning of a scream already building in his throat.

No sound made it out.

Something sliced through the air, too fast to track, too precise to be anything but deliberate and struck him dead center between the eyes.

The impact ended the scream before it started. A thin red line opened across his forehead, and behind him, a fine mist of red marked where the strike had passed clean through.

Ryan’s body went slack against the restraints, all the tension that had held him upright for the last hour draining out at once.

Silence settled back over the room.

Assassin-class stealth in Ascension worked on a simple rule: attack, and the cloak broke.

Take a hit, and the cloak broke. One exception in the whole game, as far as Kael knew and he happened to be wearing it right now.

Spirit-form companions played by different rules. So long as nothing struck back, nothing detected him through some specialized counter, the stealth held clean through every strike he threw.

Which meant Kael was still standing in that room, invisible, watching two bodies go still on a chair that had, a minute ago, been the site of something meant to humiliate a man half to death.

Two years of scheming, and this is how it ends.No triumph in the thought. No satisfaction, either just the flat, final weight of a debt finally settled, a lifetime late.

Somewhere underneath the calm, a smaller, quieter part of him noted that this was the first time in either of his lives he’d taken a life outside of combat, and felt nothing close to guilt about it. That should have troubled him more than it did.

He turned, stepped through the wall like it wasn’t there, and left Ironclad’s headquarters behind without a sound.

One name had still been sitting on his list tonight. Ashley. He’d weighed it and set it aside, running the math one more time just to be sure.

Three unrelated deaths, same night, all three somehow tracing back to him that was the kind of pattern that got noticed, and getting noticed was the one thing he couldn’t afford right now.

Not with the world about to change permanently within a day, not with his own identity still sitting safely behind a mask.

Ashley wasn’t a real threat anyway.

No backing, no organization, nothing behind her but an act that had already failed twice tonight. She could wait.

Ironclad, on the other hand, had resources real ones, the kind that could scale dangerously fast the second reality extraction hit full swing.

Cynthia and Ryan dead tonight meant that danger died with them, cleanly, before it ever had the chance to grow teeth.

Back home, Kael released the fusion, letting the Assassin’s form settle back into its own shape.

He gave it a standing order to keep watch through the night, then finally let himself sleep deep, dreamless, and thoroughly earned.

He logged back in early the next morning, materializing inside Frostwatch’s gates in a soft wash of light.

The Ancient Sealed Egg still sat quietly in storage, waiting for a contract that hadn’t come yet.

Gold was the problem breaking the bond with the Assassin now would sever its anchor to the real world, and with his reserves already thin, there’d be no way to pull a second companion across again anytime soon.

Leaving his physical body unguarded, even briefly, wasn’t a risk worth taking yet.

The Assassin stayed bonded. The egg could wait a little longer.

For gold, though, he already had a plan and it walked on two legs. He summoned Elara from the companion space with a thought.

She’d healed considerably during her time in the sanctuary steadier on her feet now, color back in her face, none of the fragile uncertainty that had marked her the night he’d cut her down from that frame.

Whatever else this quest chain turned out to cost him, watching her recover this fully felt like a fair trade already made.

The moment she caught sight of him, her whole expression brightened, and she dipped into a small, respectful bow.

”My lord.”

Kael nodded, pulled a heavy cloak from storage, and wrapped it around her shoulders full coverage, nothing recognizable, nothing that would trace back to a princess who was supposed to still be missing.

Together, they made for the Adventurers’ Guild, cutting through streets that had only just begun to stir with the morning’s first wave of foot traffic.

The elemental core changed hands without issue, verified on the spot by Guild staff, who then led both of them into a private room sealed with a silence ward standard protocol for anything involving a bounty this high-value.

Ten minutes passed in quiet, long enough that Kael found himself studying Elara’s profile in the low light, still faintly surprised by how much steadier she looked than the broken thing he’d carried out of that tomb.

Then the door opened, and a man stepped through middle-aged, composed, dressed in flowing robes the color of deep winter sky, carrying himself with the unmistakable bearing of someone who’d spent a lifetime around power and never once been impressed by it.
