My Goblin System : Levelling up with my SSS Class Devouring skill

Chapter 625: Chapter 625

”And the mission,” Satou said.

”Executed as planned,” Cael said. ”Two days later. Standard Inquisitor strike. Sixty percent casualties in the settlement. Survivors dispersed.” He paused. ”The two human villages were later raided by the actual bandits, because the settlement that had been protecting them was gone. The Church’s after-action file classified it as the monster settlement’s dispersed remnants taking revenge.”

The field was quiet.

The morning was the specific grey quality of mornings in the northern cold.

”It wasn’t Caldris’s decision,” Cael said. ”He’d passed my report up the hierarchy. The decision had come back down. The mission was a political one, not an operational one — the Church was trying to demonstrate capability in the eastern territories to regional governors who were questioning whether the Church’s presence was worth the tithe. The settlement’s actual guilt or innocence wasn’t the variable.” He paused. ”Caldris told me this. He was honest about it. He thought I should understand the full picture.”

”That’s not why you left,” Satou said.

”No,” Cael agreed. ”That was year five. I stayed for two more years.” He looked at the markers. ”I stayed because I told myself that being inside the system gave me the ability to write reports. To document. To provide the correct information even when the decision based on that information was wrong. I told myself that mattered.”

”And then.”

”And then,” Cael said, ”I received an assignment in year seven. A smaller settlement. A family, essentially — goblin extended family, about thirty people. They weren’t raiding anyone. They weren’t threatening anyone. They were listed in the Church’s active file because a bishop in the regional office wanted to demonstrate action to a local congregation that was concerned about non-human presence in the area.” He paused. ”The intelligence file was fabricated. Entirely. I recognized the fabrication methodology from previous files I’d worked with. It had a specific pattern when someone was constructing false intelligence in a hurry.”

”You wrote the report,” Satou said.

”I wrote it,” Cael said. ”Detailed. The fabrication evidence. The methodology identification. The full case.” He paused. ”The mission was executed while my report was in transit. Twelve hours after I submitted it.”

He stopped.

The field was quiet.

”The family,” he said. ”All of them.” He looked at the markers. ”I left six days later. I took copies of seven intelligence files that documented fabricated missions. I took them to Aldenmere because it was the closest human kingdom that had documented resistance to Church overreach.” He paused. ”I spent three years living with the specific quality of a person who stayed two years longer than they should have.”

Satou said nothing.

They stood at the field for a while.

”What you built here,” Cael said. ”When I first came through your gate with King Aldric — the markers were the first thing I saw. Five hundred fifty-nine of them.” He paused. ”I asked Kelvin about them that evening. He told me about the naming system. About what the markers were.”

He looked at them now.

”People who died here have markers,” he said. ”Not a general monument. Individual markers. Individual names.” He paused. ”The settlement I was sent against in year seven — thirty people. I could tell you every name if you asked. I wrote them in the margin of the mission file before I took it to Aldenmere. Because I thought they deserved to be named by someone, even if only in the margin of the document that described what was done to them.”

The light was coming up.

The settlement’s morning sounds were beginning.

Satou looked at him.

”When you speak to the Inquisitors,” Satou said, ”you’ll know what to say.”

”Yes,” Cael said.

”Not because it will necessarily change anything,” Satou said. ”But because some of them will be in year five. Or year six. And one of them might have already written a report.”

Cael looked at him.

”Yes,” he said, quieter.

They stood at the field until the settlement properly woke up around them.

Then they went to work.

====

The examination took two hours.

Not because two hours was necessary — Morgana and Jessica could complete the core assessment in forty minutes. The additional time was the ongoing research component, the specific work of two practitioners building a framework for something they’d never encountered before and understanding that building the framework correctly mattered more than building it quickly.

Lyra sat through all of it with the composed patience she applied to everything, which was indistinguishable from ordinary patience if you didn’t know her well enough to recognize the difference.

She knew they were studying her as much as examining her.

She didn’t mind.

She minded being uncertain more than she minded being studied.

”The core formation,” Morgana said, at the ninety-minute mark. ”Jessica, what are you reading from the northeast quadrant.”

”Structured,” Jessica said. ”Not the random distribution I’d expect from a twelve-week standard formation. It’s organized. Intentional.” She paused. ”More intentional than any formation I’ve seen before.”

”Because the Ancient God’s integration produces intentionality in the construction process,” Morgana said. ”Not random cell division — structured formation. The child is building itself with the same underlying principle that defines what Satou has become.” She looked at her notes. ”This is consistent with what I predicted but more advanced than the timeline I estimated.”

”Advanced is good,” Lyra said.

”Advanced is early,” Morgana said. ”Early and good aren’t the same thing. What we’re looking at suggests the child’s development timeline may be compressed relative to a standard pregnancy.”

Lyra held this.

”How compressed,” she said.

”Unknown,” Morgana said. ”That’s the honest answer. I don’t have a reference for this specific combination. What I can tell you is that I’m now updating my monitoring schedule from bi-weekly to weekly.”

”Which means you’re staying in the settlement,” Lyra said.

”For the foreseeable future,” Morgana confirmed.

Freda, who had been in the adjacent room through the examination and could be heard making small sounds that indicated she was working, went quiet for a moment when Morgana said this.

Then went back to working.
