My Goblin System : Levelling up with my SSS Class Devouring skill

Chapter 620: Chapter 620

”I’ve worked alongside ECD operatives twice,” Cael said. ”Once in joint operation, once in separate-objective deployment.” He thought about it. ”Their primary advantage is situational reading. They gather information during contact faster than standard Inquisitors and revise their approach in real time. The counter to them is denying them information — making the engagement move faster than their revision cycle.”

”Which is exactly what Satou’s capabilities do naturally,” Lyra said.

”Which is why Caldris sent ECD operatives alongside Inquisitors rather than instead of them,” Satou said slowly. ”The ECD operatives handle the assessment problem. The Inquisitors execute the plan the ECD assessment produces.”

”The ECD operatives are the eyes,” Cael confirmed. ”The Inquisitors are the hands.”

Lyra put her pen down and looked at the summary on the table.

”So the answer to ECD operatives in the mix,” she said, ”is not to let them complete an assessment. Which means the engagement has to move at a pace that doesn’t give them assessment time.”

”Or,” Freda said quietly, ”we give them an assessment that’s correct as far as it goes, and doesn’t go far enough.”

The room looked at her.

”ECD operatives are trained to trust a thorough assessment,” Freda said. ”They’re trained not to trust a shallow one. Which means if we give them something thorough enough to trust and incomplete in a specific direction—”

”They commit to a plan built on accurate but incomplete data,” Lyra said.

”Yes,” Freda said.

Cael was looking at her. ”That’s very good,” he said.

”Section eight of the framework,” Freda said. ”I’ll revise it this afternoon.” She went back to her folio.

Satou looked at the decoded summary.

At the names — Brother Aen, Sister Mira Vale.

Two people who had been selected for this mission specifically because of what he was. Who had trained against opponents like him. Who had come to the same region, presumably, because they believed in what they were doing.

He thought about Cael, seven years inside the corps.

He thought about the three Inquisitors at the confrontation that Cael was going to speak to.

’There will be people in this engagement who are following orders and people who are following conviction and people who are following both,’ he thought. ’Those categories matter.’

He put the summary in the command post’s active file. ℴℴ𝘮

”Senna,” he said. ”Thank Aldric. Tell him the intelligence reached us and tell him it’s useful.”

”And tell him about the ECD reclassification,” Lyra said, without looking up from her writing. ”He should know what Caldris used his recognition as Inquisitor cover for. That information belongs to Aldenmere’s political record.”

Senna wrote it down.

The command post continued its morning.

-----

The presentation took three hours.

Freda and Cael had arranged the command post for it — maps on the walls, the framework’s twelve sections organized by phase of approach, the specific counter-protocol for each Inquisitor operational pattern laid out with the precision of people who had spent weeks ensuring nothing was approximate.

Twelve unit leads were present. The settlement’s named defenders — Gruk, Vessa, Theron, Valka, Harkon, and seven others who commanded the settlement’s major defensive elements.

Satou stood at the room’s edge and watched.

’I don’t need to present this,’ he’d told Freda when they were planning the session. ’It’s yours.’

She’d looked at him with the specific quality she had when she was deciding whether to accept something.

’It’s for the settlement,’ she’d said. ’That’s the point.’

She presented standing, which Satou had expected. Freda stood when she worked. Sitting was for reading and writing; standing was for thinking and speaking. The absence of the staff she’d once carried was visible in the way her hands sometimes moved at her sides — the ghost of a habit, the muscle memory of someone who had always had something to hold and now didn’t.

She’d adapted.

”The Church’s Inquisitor doctrine,” she said, opening section one, ”is built on three assumptions. First: that the target will respond to threat escalation by escalating in kind. Second: that the target’s defenders are individually capable but poorly coordinated. Third: that eliminating the command structure will collapse the defense.” She looked at the unit leads. ”All three assumptions are wrong about this settlement. Our advantage is that Caldris’s models were built on the general demon lord demographic, which those assumptions fit accurately. We’re the exception. We need his operatives to discover that exception late rather than early.”

Cael took section three — the specific Inquisitor approach patterns and what to expect at each contact point. He was detailed without being repetitive, the specific quality of someone who had lived inside these protocols and understood them at the level of instinct rather than theory.

”They stage outside observation range,” he said. ”They establish four simultaneous approach vectors and converge on signal. The signal comes from the team lead’s assessment, which means the team lead is the most important target — not for elimination, for information. If the team lead is making bad assessments, the whole convergence executes the wrong plan. Our job is to ensure the team lead’s assessments are accurate but incomplete.”

Vessa’s unit leads asked three specific questions about the detection range implications.

Cael answered all three.

Freda took the ECD revision she’d finished that morning — section eight, expanded, with specific counter-protocols for operatives who adapted faster than standard Inquisitors.

”The counter to real-time adaptation,” she said, ”is not superior speed. It’s architecture.” She unrolled a diagram on the table — the settlement’s terrain, the approach vectors, the specific arrangement of positions that created a picture the ECD operatives would assess as complete when it wasn’t. ”We don’t hide our capability. We organize it so that what’s visible supports a specific conclusion that happens to leave out the most important variable.”

”Which variable,” Gruk said.

”Lord Satou,” Freda said.

The room was quiet.

”The ECD operatives will expect him to be the settlement’s primary response,” she said. ”Every assessment they build will account for him. Every convergence plan they recommend will include a specific countermeasure for what they believe he is.” She looked at the diagram. ”So the plan they’ll commit to is the plan that correctly accounts for every visible defensive element and their best model of Lord Satou.”
