My Goblin System : Levelling up with my SSS Class Devouring skill

Chapter 544: Chapter 544 (Intruder)

He looked at Satou directly.

”If you find where he went,” Grimfang said, ”and you need a third front — not Malakor’s commitment, not the council’s resources, just one more seat willing to move — send word.”

He stood and left without waiting for a response.

Nyxara’s shadow drifted toward the door.

”The calculation I ran during this meeting,” she said, not stopping, her voice still coming from every direction, ”keeps returning the same result. Chronus’s plan — whatever it is — removes options the longer it proceeds. Acting now is costly. Acting later may be impossible.” The shadow reached the door. ”I don’t commit to things I haven’t fully assessed. But I’m assessing this. That’s more than I give most situations.”

She was gone.

Morganna stood last from the Twelfth Seat.

She looked at Satou the way she’d been looking at him since he walked in — cataloguing, assessing, finding more than expected.

”What you consumed,” she said quietly. ”I don’t know the specifics. But what I can tell you is that it’s settled in you. It’s not separate anymore. It’s you.” She paused. ”That has implications for what Chronus is planning. If he’s building something designed to counter what he knew you were before — he’s building it for the wrong version of you.”

She turned to leave.

”Morganna,” Satou said.

She paused.

”Thalassian’s warning. The pattern he’s seen before. What was it called?”

Morganna was quiet for a long moment.

”The Temporal Severance,” she said. ”Chronus attempted it once before, in an earlier age. He was stopped before completion.” She paused. ”It would remove a region from its timeline entirely. Not destroy it — remove it. As if it never existed. Everyone in that region — erased from causality.”

The words sat in the room.

”How large a region?” Satou asked.

”As large as he has power for,” she said. ”Last time, at full power, he calculated a region the size of a large kingdom.” She paused. ”He lost half his power when Richard died. But he’s had three months. And eighty thousand people.”

She left.

Three seats remained.

Satou. Loki. Seraphina.

The Tenth Seat between them empty.

Loki looked at Satou with an expression that had set aside all theater.

”Worst case scenario,” he said.

”Yes,” Satou agreed.

”Malakor won’t move. The council won’t commit resources. Whatever we do against Chronus, we do alone.” He paused. ”Though Grimfang and Nyxara—”

”Aren’t committed,” Satou said. ”Not yet.”

”No. Not yet.” Loki was quiet. ”The three of us.”

Seraphina’s crimson eyes moved from the empty seat to Satou.

”Then we’d better be enough,” she said simply.

Satou looked at the Tenth Seat.

Thalassian’s words sat in his chest: Find him before he finishes.

The Temporal Severance. A region erased from causality. As large as Chronus had power for.

His settlement. Aldenmere. Everyone he’d built anything with. Everyone who’d died defending it and everyone who’d come after them. The child Lyra was carrying. All of it — as if it never existed.

He pushed back his chair and stood.

”We need to find where he went,” he said. ”Before whatever he’s building is finished.” He looked at Loki. ”Everything your network has. Everything Cassius can find. We triangulate from the empty city and we find the destination.”

”And when we find it?” Seraphina asked.

Satou looked at the empty Tenth Seat one final time.

”We end this,” he said. ”Before it ends everything else.”

LOKI’S CAPITAL CITY — THE SAME DAY AS THE GRAND SUMMONS

The city of Vael’kira had stood for four hundred years.

Four centuries of demon lord politics, trade wars, territorial disputes, and the constant complicated machinery of Loki’s Sixth Seat power had flowed through these streets and left their mark. The architecture was deliberately beautiful — not the oppressive grandeur of Chronus’s Tempra with its dark stone and time-measuring devices built into every wall, but something more theatrical. Tall spires with coloured glass that split the light into patterns across the streets at dawn. Markets that operated through the night because Loki had always preferred the city alive rather than orderly. Residential districts where races from across the demon realm lived in proximity, not because Loki was particularly idealistic, but because diverse populations created diverse intelligence networks and Loki had always been practical about that.

Cassius had lived here for years.

Not continuously — intelligence work required movement, required weeks and months spent in other territories running operations, building networks, gathering the information that Loki’s long games required. But Vael’kira was home in the way that a vampire who had outlived several human lifetimes understood home. Not sentiment. Familiarity. The specific knowledge of which streets ran where, which tavern owners would talk if approached correctly, which patrol schedules had gaps, which shadows fell at which angles at which hours.

He knew this city the way he knew his own body.

Which was why, standing in the command hall reviewing intelligence reports at mid-morning while Loki was at the Grand Summons council, Cassius noticed the wrongness before he understood it.

The city went quiet.

Not the quiet of night or the quiet of empty streets. The specific quality of a sound being cut — the market noise that was always present like a heartbeat, the distant conversation of morning traders, the particular texture of a living city doing what living cities did.

Gone.

In the space between one breath and the next.

Cassius was at the window before the thought had fully formed, his vampire senses extending outward, reaching for information—

And what they found made him go very still.

A presence.

Vast and cold and carrying the specific signature of temporal magic, the kind he’d felt once before during the Arena incident — but compressed differently now, concentrated, the way a river compressed when it flowed through a narrow gorge and became something far more dangerous than it looked in open water.

Not approaching.

Already here.

At the gate.

THE MAIN GATE OF VAEL’KIRA

The guards at the eastern gate had been following standard protocol when the man appeared on the road.
