My Goblin System : Levelling up with my SSS Class Devouring skill

Chapter 453: Chapter 453

[The Day before - Somewhere in the forest ]

The small hut was quiet in the deep hours of night, lit only by the dying embers in the hearth. Satou lay on the blankets Marcus had provided, he has been busy tending to his injured companions sylvara and cassius and they are both getting better..

Sylvara slept fitfully on the bed Elara had prepared, her breathing steady but occasionally hitching when pain from her side wound broke through even unconsciousness. Two days of Elara’s expert care had stabilized her condition, pulled her back from the edge of death, though she was still far from recovered.

Cassius sat in his usual chair by the window, his vampire nature requiring less sleep than mortals. He’d been recovering his depleted blood magic reserves, the burns from holy water slowly healing under Elara’s treatment.\

None of them noticed the small shadow that detached from the darkness outside.

A crow—midnight-black with eyes that glowed faint purple—landed silently on the window sill. Corruption magic animated the construct, giving it purpose beyond natural bird behavior.

The crow tapped its beak against the window. Once. Twice. Three times in deliberate pattern.

Cassius’s red eyes snapped to the sound, vampire senses immediately recognizing something unnatural. He stood with silent grace, crossing to investigate.

The crow dropped a small rolled parchment sealed with purple wax bearing Seraphina’s corruption magic signature, then dissolved into purple-black smoke that vanished on the night breeze.

Cassius caught the parchment, examined the seal with growing concern. A message from the settlement, delivered by emergency magical construct.

That meant trouble.

He crossed to Satou and placed a hand on the dragoblin’s shoulder. ”Lord Satou. Wake up, its urgent ”

Satou’s flame-like eyes opened instantly, awareness flooding back with the alertness of someone who’d survived too many ambushes to wake slowly. ”What happened?”

”Message from Lady Seraphina.” Cassius held up the sealed parchment. ”Delivered by corruption magic. She wouldn’t use emergency channels unless—”

Satou was already sitting up, taking the parchment with hands that trembled slightly from sudden adrenaline. He broke the seal, purple wax crumbling, and unrolled the message.

Seraphina’s elegant handwriting filled the page, though the letters showed signs of haste:

Satou,

I’m writing this on the night before what I believe will be the final battle for the settlement. I pray this message reaches you in time.

The human army arrived early—four days ahead of our calculations. Commander Elric brought twenty-three hundred soldiers, not the twelve hundred we expected. And he brought four Heroes with him—the same ones who killed Duke Margoth.

We’ve been preparing defenses for two days since they appeared. Tomorrow at dawn, they’ll attack in full force. Loki arrived with fifteen hundred reinforcements, which gives us hope, but the numbers are still against us.

I know you’re five days away. I know you left to kill Richard Clay and complete a mission that needed doing. But if there’s any way you can return faster than normal travel... if you have magic or abilities that could bring you back sooner... we need you.

Tomorrow’s battle will decide everything. If we lose, the settlement falls. If we win, we survive to fight another day.

Your people are ready. Kelvin has the defenders organized. Lyra has coordinated our tactical response. Jessica stands ready to heal the wounded. Everyone you trained, everyone you inspired—they’re all prepared to fight for the home you built.

But they’re fighting without their demon lord. Without the person who brought them together.

Please come home, Satou. Even if you arrive during the battle rather than before it. Even if you can only help with the aftermath. Just... come home.

I love you. I should have said it before you left, but I was afraid. Now I’m writing it in a letter because tomorrow I might not get another chance.

Please stay safe. Please come back to us.

Seraphina

Satou read the letter twice, his hands beginning to shake—not with fear, but with barely contained emotion.

Early arrival. Four days ahead of schedule. Twenty-three hundred soldiers. Four Heroes. Battle beginning at dawn.

And he was away, satou felt frustration and anger both at thesame time ,

”Lord Satou?” Cassius’s voice carried carefully controlled concern. ”What does it say?”

Satou’s response was to stand in a single fluid motion, his frame radiating sudden desperate energy. ”Wake Sylvara. Pack everything. We’re leaving. NOW.”

”Leaving? But Sylvara’s wound—she can’t travel yet—”

”The human army is attacking the settlement at dawn. Dawn Tommorow, Cassius, which means the battle is starting in HOURS.” Satou was already moving, gathering his belongings with frantic efficiency. ”We don’t have time for proper recovery. We leave now or we arrive too late.”

Cassius recognizing the urgency. ”How far can we realistically travel with Sylvara injured?”

”I’ll carry her.” Satou’s tone left no room for argument. ”She can’t run, but I can.’

He crossed to where Sylvara slept and gently shook her shoulder. ”Sylvara. Wake up. Emergency.”

Sylvara eyes opened, confusion clearing quickly as she registered Satou’s expression. ”What’s happening?”

”The settlement is under attack. The battle starts at dawn today. We’re leaving immediately.”

Sylvara tried to sit up, gasped as pain lanced through her healing side wound. ”I can ride. I can push through—”

”You’ll reopen the wound and bleed out before we cover fifty miles.” Satou’s voice was firm but not unkind. ”I’m going to carry you. It’s faster than you trying to travel on your own, and it means we don’t have to slow down for your injury.”

Sylvara’s pride warred with tactical reality on her face. She was an assassin, trained to be self-sufficient, unused to being carried like luggage. But she was also practical enough to recognize when pride would get in the way of mission success.

”How fast can you move while carrying me?”

”Faster than you could run even healthy. My stamina and strength make the extra weight manageable over long distances.” Satou was already checking his equipment, mentally preparing for the journey. ”Cassius, how are your blood magic reserves?, because the moment we reach we will join the battle instantly ”
