Chapter 427: Chapter 427

Settlement Command Post

Lyra received reports through Seraphina’s telepathic network—dozens of voices screaming about unkillable white-skinned creatures destroying defensive lines.

”Eastern sector overrun! Those things don’t die! They don’t feel pain!”

”Central gates lost! We can’t hold against them!”

”Western wall abandoned! Mass casualties! Retreating to settlement core!”

The reports came in waves, each one describing the same horror: thirty failed hero experiments rampaging through Third Line, killing settlement defenders and human soldiers indiscriminately.

Lyra’s tactical mind processed the information with growing despair.

We’re losing Third Line completely. The Fallen Heroes are breaking our defense faster than we can adapt.

She’d tried to organize coordinated responses—targeting the creatures’ heads and hearts simultaneously, using overwhelming force, exploiting their mindless aggression.

But the settlement defenders were exhausted, wounded, running low on weapons and morale. They couldn’t mount effective resistance against superhuman enemies.

Through the network, she broadcast: ”All defenders, retreat from Third Line! Pull back to settlement core! Abandon all forward positions! Consolidate at the inner defensive ring!”

The order was acknowledgment of defeat.

Third Line—the fortifications they’d spent weeks building, the defensive position they’d bled to hold for twelve hours—was being abandoned.

But staying would just mean more deaths to creatures that couldn’t be effectively fought by exhausted, wounded defenders.

Settlement fighters began withdrawing, conducting fighting retreats toward the settlement’s core.

The human forces, seeing the withdrawal, pushed forward aggressively—

Then Commander Elric’s withdrawal order sounded.

Horns blew across the battlefield. Human soldiers stopped their advance and began pulling back to siege positions.

Lyra watched through scouts’ reports as both sides simultaneously withdrew—settlement defenders retreating to core, human forces pulling back to siege perimeter.

The battle was pausing.

Settlement Main Village

Night had fallen. The battlefield went dark except for scattered fires and torch-lit positions.

In the settlement’s core—the innermost defensive ring around the civilian shelters—the surviving defenders gathered.

Lyra stood on a makeshift command platform, her golden eyes scanning the assembled fighters.

She counted.

And kept counting.

And the numbers didn’t get better.

Final Count - Day Four Casualties:

Started dawn: 643 defenders

Current strength: 183 effective fighters

Casualties Day Four: 460 total (287 killed, 173 wounded but unable to fight)

The odds were brutal.

They’d lost seventy-one percent of their fighting force in one day.

Lyra looked at the survivors:

85 goblin warriors (from 338at dawn)38 demon warriors (from 120 at dawn)31 serpentfolk fighters (from 98 at dawn)29 orc shock troops (from 87 at dawn)

Plus Jessica’s medical team, Thrak’s engineers (Thrak himself dead from champion duel), and scattered specialists.

183 defenders.

Against Commander Elric’s approximately 1,950 soldiers, 4 wounded heroes, and approximately 16 surviving Fallen Heroes.

The ratio had shifted from six-to-one to approximately ten-to-one.

We can’t win, Lyra thought with terrible clarity. The mathematics don’t support any scenario where 183 exhausted, wounded defenders hold against two thousand soldiers plus heroes plus failed experiments.

Seraphina materialized beside her, the demon lord having returned from her battle with the Four Heroes.

She looked wounded—her back still showed burns from Seraphelle’s Divine Smite, her arms were bruised from blocking Fallen Hero strikes, her demon lord healing was working but slowly.

”I failed,” Seraphina said quietly, her voice carrying grief and fury and shame. ”I had Gattychan on his knees. Dying. Helpless. My blade was raised to execute him. And Elric’s Fallen Heroes interrupted at exactly the right moment. The heroes escaped. I killed all twenty failed experiments, but the true heroes survived.”

Lyra wanted to say it was fine, that Seraphina had done her best, that killing twenty Fallen Heroes was impressive.

But lies wouldn’t help them now.

”How badly are the heroes wounded?” she asked.

”Catastrophically. Gattychan had seventeen wounds, broken arm twice, punctured lung, severe blood loss. Seraphelle’s healing magic was disrupted, both her forearms cut. Mikazelle was magically exhausted. Rindelle had broken arm. They barely escaped alive.”

”How long until they’re combat-effective again?”

Seraphina’s demon lord senses had tracked them during their teleport. ”Twelve hours minimum. Probably longer. They returned to Elric’s command post and immediately required emergency healing. They’re out of the battle for tonight, possibly until tomorrow afternoon.”

Lyra processed this information.

”Elric withdrew his forces. He ordered full retreat to siege positions despite being close to breaking our defense completely. Why would he do that?”

”Because the heroes can’t fight me,” Seraphina replied. ”I nearly killed them. If I return to the battlefield at full power, without Gattychan’s Villain’s Bane suppression, I could slaughter hundreds of soldiers before anyone stops me. Elric knows this. So he withdrew to protect his forces until the heroes recover.”

Understanding clicked.

”He’s conceding tonight to us. Giving both sides time to rest and recover. Then tomorrow at dawn, he attacks with fully recovered heroes plus his overwhelming numerical advantage.”

”Yes.”

Lyra looked at the 183 exhausted defenders.

”We can’t survive tomorrow’s assault. The mathematics don’t work. Even with you fighting at full power, even with desperate last stands, we simply don’t have enough fighters.”

”No,” Seraphina agreed quietly. ”We don’t.”

”Loki’s reinforcements?”

”Arrive tomorrow. Fifteen hundred soldiers, I believe. But they won’t reach us until after Elric’s dawn assault.”

”So we need to survive from dawn until afternoon. Approximately six to eight hours.”

”Against overwhelming odds, yes.”

Lyra was silent for a long moment, her tactical mind running through scenarios, calculating probabilities, searching desperately for any strategy that resulted in survival.

Every calculation ended the same way: DEFEAT.

”What I didn’t know,” Lyra said quietly, ”was that the worst is yet to come.”

Seraphina looked at her. ”What do you mean?”

”Elric withdrew tonight. He’s resting his forces, treating his wounded, preparing for final assault. He’s being cautious, methodical, ensuring victory through overwhelming preparation.”

”Yes?”

”But cautious commanders don’t stay cautious forever. Tomorrow, he’ll commit everything. No holding back. No reserves. Total assault with every soldier, every hero, every Fallen Hero, every weapon he possesses. He’ll throw everything at us simultaneously because he knows we’re nearly broken.”

Lyra’s golden eyes reflected firelight from the burning Third Line in the distance.
