WAYFARER: CLAIM THE UNCLAIMABLE

Arch started with Caspian as soon as they were back inside the shelter. The old channel took longer to establish than the ordinary network, and the delay seemed to make every second louder. Sio stayed near the table but never actually sat down, shifting from one side of the room to the other while Arch worked through the connection. He kept glancing at the communicator even though there was nothing to see yet, his body still carrying the same restless urgency that had almost sent him toward the pickup point hours too early.

When the channel finally opened, Arch kept the message brief. Mira had been taken by Central Nexus. A recorded demand had been sent directly to Sio. The pickup was tomorrow morning at the coordinates Vise provided. Arch gave Caspian the location, Vise’s name and nothing that revealed where the shelter itself was. Once the message disappeared into the old route, Sio waited several seconds before asking, ”How long does that usually take?” The question came too quickly for Arch to mistake it for casual curiosity, and when he explained that Caspian might need time to answer without exposing himself, Sio dragged one hand through his hair and started pacing again. ”So basically anywhere from a minute to whenever he decides answering us won’t get him dragged into this too.” Arch told him that was close enough, then opened a separate route for Fern before Sio could turn the uncertainty into another dozen questions.

Fern received an even shorter message. Arch deliberately avoided sending both through the same system, working under the assumption that whoever had leaked Sio’s examination might already be watching one or both of them. Sio stopped pacing at that and leaned one hand against the table. ”You really think they could be watching Caspian?” His voice had lost the anger from outside and become quieter, which Arch found more worrying. ”Or Fern. I mean, they helped me, so if Central knows that...” He did not finish the thought. Arch did not pretend the possibility was small. Somebody had moved Sio’s information upward without permission. Until they knew who, treating every channel as safe would be stupidity disguised as optimism.

Neither reply came immediately.

The waiting settled into the room with them.

Sio lasted only a few minutes before pulling the coordinates back up. The pickup point sat farther along the southern coast, marked near a smaller transit junction rather than any visible Nexus facility. He enlarged the area, checked it twice and finally looked toward Arch. ”Mum isn’t there.” It was not really a question. The more he stared at the location, the more obvious it became that Vise had chosen somewhere convenient for collecting him rather than somewhere Mira was actually being held. ”They just want me standing where they can pick me up. After that I won’t know where I’m going until they’ve already got me.”

”That’s how I read it.” Arch came around the table and studied the map with him. ”The location is useful to them because they can control arrival and departure without revealing where Mira is. You board their transport, and from that point the route belongs to them.”

Sio’s attention shifted immediately to Arch’s coat. The thought had been sitting behind his eyes since the recording, waiting for enough room to surface. ”Your keys. You said once one reaches a place, that place becomes an anchor for you. So give me one.” His words sped up as he built the idea. ”They take me wherever they’re keeping Mum, I keep the key with me, and once we arrive you open a door. Vise can tell me not to bring one all he wants, but that doesn’t mean he’ll actually find it.”

Arch had expected the suggestion, which only made Sio more frustrated when the answer did not come quickly. ”Normally that would be the obvious solution. The problem is that Vise knows it too. He didn’t warn us about the keys because he expects to find a brass object in your pocket. He knows enough about my ability to look for my resonance, and anything I deliberately prepare as an anchor will carry it.”

Sio leaned both hands against the table and stared down at the map. ”Could you hide it inside something? Sew it into my clothes, put it under a shoe, whatever. I don’t care what it looks like.”

”The shape isn’t the problem.”

”Wrap it in something?”

”That does not stop it being mine.”

Sio exhaled sharply and pushed away from the table, his frustration looking for somewhere physical to go. ”There has to be something. I hate that every idea I have sounds obvious the second I say it because apparently Vise had years to memorize you while you barely remember his face.”

Arch’s expression tightened at that, though not because the remark offended him. The same thing had been irritating him since the recording. ”The name is still there somewhere. I remember hearing it, probably through old Nexus work, but the man himself never mattered enough for me to keep. That is not the same as him knowing everything about me.”

”He knows the keys.”

”He knows the part he saw.”

Sio looked back at him. ”That sounds like you have another part.”

Arch gave him a tired look. ”It sounds like I’m reminding you that people remember what they were present for. Vise remembers something about me and Silas. We do not know how much. I’m not giving him more credit because he managed to frighten us.”

That stopped Sio for a moment. Not because the fear went away, but because Arch had finally named what was happening without trying to make it smaller.

Sio looked again at the dark communicator waiting for Caspian or Fern to answer. ”They knew where Mum lived because she was attached to me.” He spoke more slowly now, the thought having returned from earlier and settled into something uglier. ”I kept worrying about what they had on my file. My Scar, my first Claim, the examination, all of it. I never thought about the part where her name would be sitting right there beside mine.”

Arch set the map down. ”Mira was taken because Vise decided she was useful leverage. The existence of a record did not make that decision for him.”

”I know.” Sio rubbed two fingers against his temple, right where the pressure from training still lingered. ”I know that in the reasonable part of my head. The rest of me keeps thinking I should have seen it coming somehow.”

Arch did not give him another explanation. Sio had already said he understood. Repeating the logic would only make him feel as though understanding was supposed to fix the fear.

The communicator remained silent.

Sio tried sitting down once and stood again before the chair had stopped moving beneath him. He crossed to the window, stared through the trees toward a coastline he had been desperate to explore that morning and finally walked outside without saying anything.

Arch let him go for a few minutes.

When he followed, Sio was standing near the training ground with the same piece of driftwood in one hand. He had not opened a passage. He was simply holding it, his grip tightening and relaxing around the rough wood while he stared at the cup lying in the grass where the morning lesson had ended.

Arch stopped beside him. ”How bad is your head?”

Sio took a moment before answering. ”Still hurts. Not like before, but enough that trying more openings tonight would probably be stupid.” He glanced toward Arch and managed something that was not quite a smile. ”There. I said it myself. You don’t even have to lecture me.”

Arch did not take the opening for humour. ”Good. Then we leave the ability alone tonight.”

Sio looked back toward the fallen cup. ”I need to do something, though. I can’t sit in there watching the communicator like it owes me an answer. Every time nothing happens, I start thinking about Mum still being with him, and then I want to leave for the coordinates even though I know nobody is coming until tomorrow.”

His voice tightened on the last word.

”I hate that part most. He picked the time. He decided I get to wait all night knowing exactly what he can do while I’m not there.”

Arch came to stand beside him rather than opposite him. ”That is part of the pressure. He wants tomorrow morning to feel decided before you arrive.”

Sio rolled the driftwood between his palms. ”It already feels decided.”

”Going may be.”

Sio looked toward him immediately.

Arch continued before the words could become an argument. ”Going and giving Vise every other decision are different things. You may have to reach that pickup point tomorrow. That does not mean you arrive with nothing except fear and obedience.”

Sio’s jaw tightened. ”I’m going if we don’t find Mum before then.”

”I know.”

”I mean it, Arch. I’m not staying here because somebody tells me the risk is too high. She’s there because they want me.”

Arch absorbed the words without correcting the part Sio already understood emotionally. ”Then we prepare for the version where you go. Caspian may answer. Fern may answer. We may learn where Mira is before morning. Until then, we work with what we actually have.”

Sio looked down at his hands. ”Which isn’t much.”

”It is more than Vise knows.”

That caught his attention.

Arch nodded toward the driftwood. ”This morning you learned something about your first Claim that nobody at Central Nexus has seen. You are not ready to rely on it in a fight, and I am not telling you that one morning of training suddenly makes you dangerous. But Vise built his plan around the Sio described in reports. That boy tried to move his whole body whenever distance became a problem. You already know more than that boy did.”

Sio flexed his fingers unconsciously. The idea from training returned, the fist remaining here while only the final part of the strike crossed the distance. He had not done it successfully. His control was nowhere near ready enough to trust under pressure.

Still, it existed now.

”Not enough to punch him.”

”No.”

Sio looked faintly offended despite the situation. ”You didn’t even let me finish.”

”I knew where the sentence was going.”

He lowered the driftwood, and some of the frustration finally left his shoulders. ”Fine. Not enough yet.”

Arch watched him for another moment, then reached into the travel bag he had brought outside.

Sio noticed the movement immediately.

What Arch removed was not one of the brass keys.

It was a small metal container, old enough that the edges had darkened while the clasp remained carefully maintained. He opened it and revealed a thick metallic paste inside, dark enough to look almost black until the fading light caught a dull sheen across its surface.

Sio’s curiosity surfaced automatically. ”What’s that?”

Arch dipped two fingers into the paste. ”Give me your arm.”

On any other day that answer would have created more questions than cooperation. Tonight Sio pushed the sleeve of his left arm above the elbow and extended it without arguing.

Arch took his wrist and turned the inner forearm upward. The first line he drew was short and precise, followed by another crossing it near the middle. A narrow curve formed around both, stopping before it completed the circle, and three smaller marks followed near the center. Arch worked with the familiarity of someone who had drawn the symbol before, checking each line before moving to the next.

A faint warmth spread beneath Sio’s skin.

He watched the mark darken. The sensation did not resemble his first Claim or the strange response of the Scar. It sat quietly against him, warm enough to notice without becoming painful.

Sio studied Arch’s face instead of the symbol. ”What does it...”

The question faded before he completed it.

Arch looked up.

Sio’s attention moved toward the shelter and the communicator waiting inside. Mira returned to him immediately, the chair beneath the examination light, her restrained hands somewhere below the frame, Vise touching her simply because he knew Sio would watch.

There were already too many questions waiting for answers.

Arch finished the final line and kept Sio’s arm steady until the metallic paste settled into the skin. He examined the symbol once, his expression giving away nothing about what he expected from it.

”That should work.”

Sio looked down at the mark.

Any other morning, Arch would already have been dealing with questions about whether it was connected to his doors, whether Vise could detect it, what the unfinished circle meant and exactly how worried Sio should be by the word should.

Tonight, Sio only lowered his sleeve carefully over the symbol.

Arch noticed the questions he had chosen not to ask.

For once, he let them remain unanswered.
