WAYFARER: CLAIM THE UNCLAIMABLE

The man kneeling beside the remains of Arch’s doorway had been there long enough for ash to settle across the back of his coat. One palm rested against the broken floorboards while the other remained braced against his knee, his breathing slow and controlled despite the strain tightening the muscles along his forearm. The Scar hidden beneath his sleeve gave no visible sign of what it was doing, but the retrieval officers around him had learned not to interrupt. Twice already he had lost whatever trace Arch’s passage had left behind, only to find it again somewhere beyond anything their equipment could register.

When he finally lifted his hand, he stayed there for several seconds, flexing his fingers until feeling returned to them. ”Southern Thalassia. That part I’m sure of. The trail thins badly after the crossing, but it reaches the southern coast. Give me more time with the residue and I might narrow it further.”

The information immediately turned the ruined study into a planning room. One officer opened a route display across his communicator while another started talking about the southern Nexus branches, transit access through Meridia and how quickly local teams could begin searching the coast. The discussion had barely gathered momentum when someone entered through the gap where Arch’s outer wall had once stood, and the tracker stopped speaking before anyone needed to tell him to.

”Vise Kudzu,” he said as he rose, brushing gray dust from his palm. ”We found them. Southern Thalassia.”

Vise crossed the room without answering immediately. He was leaner than most of the retrieval personnel around him, dressed simply enough that nothing about him announced why the others had made space. Smoke drifted through the broken ceiling and caught against his coat while he took in the shattered doorway, burned maps and remains of Arch’s equipment with little more than passing interest. Only after the officer with the route display began explaining how quickly a Thalassian search could begin did Vise lift one hand.

”Don’t send anyone.” He accepted the communicator another officer offered him and glanced through the recovered information while the room fell quiet. ”Arch crossed an ocean because he wanted distance. Put half a Nexus branch on the coast and he’ll know you’re coming long before you know where he is. Then he opens another door and tomorrow you get to search somewhere else.”

The officer lowered the route display but did not hide his frustration quickly enough. ”Central Nexus assigned you to retrieve Sio Eloran. We finally have a continent. I’m trying to understand what we gain by leaving it alone.”

Vise barely seemed to hear the complaint. He moved past the reports people above him had apparently considered important and stopped only when he reached the family information attached to Sio’s file. Two names held him there longer than anything else had.

Silas Eloran.

Mira Eloran.

The photograph beside Mira’s record kept his thumb still for several seconds. The tracker noticed because there had been so little else to read from Vise since he arrived. ”You know her?”

”I knew Silas.” Vise’s voice remained flat, but his thumb stayed against Mira’s photograph longer than necessary before he locked the screen. Whatever memory had surfaced did not seem to require sharing. He handed the communicator back and looked once more toward the doorway Arch had used to escape. ”Leave Thalassia alone. Chasing Arch is exactly the sort of problem he knows how to solve.”

The officer beside him glanced between Vise and the family record that had just disappeared. ”And Sio?”

Vise had already begun walking toward the opening in the wall. He stopped only long enough to answer, his tone carrying no satisfaction, no anger, nothing that made the decision easier to understand. ”We bring him to us.”

Across the ocean, Sio was still awake. Arch had taken them inland before darkness fully settled, following a narrow trail between wind-shaped trees until the sea disappeared behind the ridge. The shelter waiting there looked old enough that Sio initially assumed they had stopped only to rest. Vines had claimed most of one wall, one shutter had been repaired with wood that did not match the original frame, and the kitchen somehow contained three different kinds of cups without two belonging to the same set.

Sio liked it immediately, which Arch discovered within the first ten minutes because every window had already been opened, every visible stretch of coastline had been inspected and the questions had begun before Arch even found the lamp. The distant lights beyond the trees belonged to a southern settlement, though Arch refused to tell him exactly which one until Sio stopped trying to guess. The Pelagic Rings were farther north. The structures Sio had seen across the shallows were not all residences. Some were restoration facilities, water gardens, markets and public walkways built around older reef structures instead of over them. Arch had visited the continent enough times that Sio eventually abandoned asking whether he had been somewhere and started asking when.

Dinner slowed him down only slightly. Sio was halfway through asking why a man capable of crossing continents through doors still carried an ordinary travel bag when Arch finally rested his spoon against the bowl and looked at him.

”You understand that having an ability does not make underwear appear at the destination.”

Sio considered that with unnecessary seriousness before answering. ”That is actually the first convincing argument you’ve given for the bag. The second question is whether you’ve ever opened a door somewhere, realized you forgot something and immediately opened another one back.”

Arch resumed eating. ”You’re assuming my mistakes are available for public study.”

”That sounded like yes.”

The look Arch gave him usually ended conversations. Sio had already learned that it did not physically prevent him from continuing, and when he asked whether the shelter belonged to Arch, the older man explained that it had belonged to a travelling companion decades earlier and had gradually become available to whoever still remembered where the key was kept. Sio immediately put down his spoon.

”The key. Same kind you use for your doors?”

Arch closed his eyes for a brief second. ”You heard one word.”

”It was an important word.”

”You don’t know that.”

”I’m trying to.”

Arch stared at him long enough that Sio’s expression became increasingly innocent and therefore less convincing.

Exhaustion finally succeeded where Arch had failed. Sio covered one yawn, then another several minutes later, irritation appearing each time his own body interrupted him. Even then he kept wandering back toward the nearest window whenever the trees shifted enough to reveal distant lights. Arch watched his head dip once while he was sitting there and decided the argument had gone on long enough.

”Go sleep before you fall through the window and create another problem I have to explain to Mira.”

Sio rubbed both palms over his face. ”This is my first night in Thalassia. Sleeping feels like voluntarily missing part of it.”

”You spent yesterday being thrown through stone, nearly strangled by a Vessel, examined for hours and carried across an ocean while my house collapsed behind us. I promise the continent will still be here after breakfast.”

Sio looked toward the lights one more time. ”That’s annoyingly reasonable.”

”You’ll survive.”

”That has been said to me far too often recently.”

He finally surrendered, taking his notebook into the adjoining room with him. Arch heard the mattress shift several times, then the faint scratch of a page turning. Less than ten minutes later, the shelter became quiet enough that Sio’s breathing was the clearest sound inside it.

Only then did Arch bring out Silas’s case.

He had spent the journey to Thalassia resisting the conclusion waiting inside it. Something had responded to him during Sio’s examination, and the reaction had strengthened when Silas’s belongings were brought near. Sio himself had described the sensation as familiarity, as though whatever lived beneath his awareness considered Arch already known, but Arch refused to let that become proof simply because the answer appealed to him.

He knew what grief could do to evidence. A familiar expression became proof. A habit became inheritance of something impossible. Nineteen years gave memory plenty of time to reshape itself around whatever a person wanted to find.

The old oval instrument inside Silas’s case offered something memory could not.

Arch carried it into the room where Sio slept and sat carefully beside the mattress. The device had been obsolete for years, replaced by modern Nexus scanners capable of separating Scar signatures, Passage residue and ability responses with far greater precision. This older instrument did something simpler. It reacted to the underlying resonance of a soul, and what made Silas’s resonance distinctive was the slightly delayed second pulse, an insignificant irregularity medically and one Silas had nevertheless complained about during practically every examination.

Arch remembered a clinic in western Zephyrus, rain hammering against the roof while Silas sat on an examination cot with mud drying across one boot. A local physician had explained that the delay was harmless. Silas had spent the rest of the appointment accusing the instrument of judging him.

”You realize it doesn’t have a face,” Arch had told him.

”That makes it worse. Imagine being disappointed in someone without even having eyes.”

The physician had laughed. Arch had laughed harder. Silas had remained offended on principle.

Now Arch positioned the same kind of instrument several inches above Sio’s chest and waited. Nothing answered immediately. When he moved the device closer, warmth gradually gathered beneath his fingers and a narrow line along the metal brightened. The first pulse travelled through it clearly enough that Arch already knew what he was waiting for, and the slightly delayed second beat followed exactly where memory said it would.

He drew the instrument away until the response disappeared completely, changed his position and tried again. The same cadence returned. Arch still refused to trust a single similarity, so he opened Silas’s case again and removed the cracked transparent plate preserved beneath the old examination records. The plate carried a resonance impression taken directly from Silas while he was alive.

Arch placed it beside the active reading from Sio and waited for both patterns to settle. The old impression appeared first. The response from inside Sio followed, carrying the same delayed second pulse and the same small asymmetry along one edge. He compared them again, then once more from another position, because being cautious could hurt nobody tonight while being wrong could eventually hurt Sio very badly.

The result did not change.

Silas’s soul was inside Sio.
