I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 583: Floor 7 - Vitreous Rift Part I

”Every floor feels less like a random challenge and more like... a lesson. Test designed to teach a specific skill or force adaptation to unusual circumstances.”

Father Caelen’s weathered features showed agreement as he maintained pace beside Jack through the poison fog.

”I’ve noticed the same pattern. The reversed healing, the inverse power scaling, the sensory deprivation forcing alternative perception methods, the beast required temporal combat awareness, and now this floor rewards calm in a lethal environment. Each challenge addresses a different aspect of combat capability or mental discipline.”

”But why?” Jack’s mind worried at the question, unable to let the inconsistency rest without explanation. ”S-rank dungeons are dangerous, but they’re usually just progressively harder combat encounters. This feels more like a training program. Like someone designed these floors specifically to force learning rather than test existing capabilities.”

The old priest was quiet for a moment, considering the question with professional assessment informed by forty years of navigating similar structures.

”The dungeon was created for a purpose beyond simple challenge. Whoever or whatever designed this place wanted to ensure anyone who reached the final floor would have demonstrated mastery across multiple combat disciplines and psychological pressures.”

Jack’s thoughts turned to the Moonveil Serpents waiting on the tenth floor.

Then, to the Earth soldiers scattered across the fourth floor, evidence that this place connected his original world to his current existence in ways he didn’t understand.

And underlying everything, the silver veins on his right arm that had appeared upon entering the dungeon.

A physical manifestation of whatever corruption or blessing this place was imprinting on his physiology.

”The serpents at the castle,” Jack stated, his mind making connections as they walked through the lethal fog. ”They had poison. Venom that should have affected my bound minotaurs during combat, but didn’t.”

He raised his right arm, watching the silver veins pulse with their steady rhythm.

”Dragon’s Flesh provides poison immunity. Complete protection against natural toxins. If that passive extends through my Soul Link to creatures I’ve bound...”

”Then your army would share your immunities,” Father Caelen finished, recognition of a significant tactical advantage.

”Any resistance or protection you possess potentially transfers to entities serving under your command through the Soul Warden connection.”

Jack’s mind immediately began calculating implications.

If his passives extended to bound creatures, that meant his army didn’t just benefit from Soul Resonance’s temporary stat boost; they shared his Dragon’s Scales defensive enhancement, his poison immunity, and his enhanced regeneration from Dragon’s Flesh’s organ reinforcement.

The Soul Warden class wasn’t just about binding the quantity of servants. It was about creating an army that shared their master’s enhanced capabilities, turning individual advantages into force multipliers that made each bound creature significantly more dangerous than their base statistics indicated.

”That clarifies why the minotaurs remained impervious to the venom,” Jack affirmed, the strategic implication integrating into his understanding with precise clarity.

They continued walking through the poison fog, the hour-long journey feeling simultaneously eternal and passing quickly as Jack’s mind worked through the implications of discoveries the dungeon had forced him to make.

Each floor teaches something valuable.

Combat adaptation, temporal awareness through Abyssal Step, poison immunity extending to his bound army.

What would the remaining floors teach? What other capabilities was he carrying without recognizing their full potential?

The exit archway materialized ahead through the fog, a stone passage leading upward toward the seventh floor, where a new challenge awaited.

Jack and Father Caelen approached without hesitation, both warriors having learned that this dungeon rewarded forward progress despite each floor’s attempts to trap or kill those unprepared for its specific lesson.

Jack stepped through the archway from the sixth floor, Father Caelen following close behind as the transition completed and a new environment materialized around them.

The seventh floor was unlike anything they’d encountered in the previous challenges.

The entire space was constructed from glass.

Unlike conventional windows or panels, the solid crystalline structure seamlessly formed the floor, walls, and ceiling, capturing and refracting light from unidentified sources.

The effect was simultaneously beautiful and deeply unsettling, creating an environment that felt fragile despite the obvious magical reinforcement required to support a structure of this scale.

The floor stretched a mile in every direction, a vast expanse of transparent surface that revealed nothing beneath except darkness so absolute it made the void between floating islands seem shallow by comparison.

Looking down provided a vertigo-inducing sensation of standing on nothing, the glass so clear that only occasional imperfections in the crystalline structure confirmed solid ground existed beneath their feet.

Serpents emerged from the glass walls.

Hundreds of them, bodies sliding through the crystalline barriers as if the solid material posed no obstacle to their movement.

The creatures ranged from Dread-class that were fifteen feet long to massive Nightmare-ranked monsters whose bulk should have shattered the delicate environment simply by existing within it.

Jack cataloged the numbers.

Roughly two hundred Dread-ranked serpents and one hundred Nightmare-class.

He reached into his soul space, consciousness interfacing with his serpent.

The Disaster-class serpent materialized in response to his mental command, its massive form appearing on the glass floor, its weight that should have immediately cracked the fragile surface.

But the glass held, magical reinforcement preventing the creature’s bulk from causing structural failure despite physics suggesting otherwise.

Father Caelen moved immediately, his weathered form climbing onto the bound serpent’s back with surprising agility for someone his age.

The old priest settled into position, produced his flask, and took a long sip before offering an observation.

”Well,” Father Caelen remarked, settling onto the serpent’s back. ”A glass floor. How fragile for a battlefield.” He took a swig from his flask. ”At least if we fall through, the view on the way down should be spectacular.”

Jack’s lips twitched despite the tactical situation, the old priest’s casual attitude toward lethal danger providing momentary levity before combat inevitably commenced.

The serpents charged, their coordinated assault leaving no time for further commentary.

Jack’s right hand moved instinctively, gathering lightning as he prepared to eliminate multiple threats with a single technique.

He brought his hands together and released a loud BOOM!

The resulting BOOM sent lightning rippling outward in an expanding wave that caught twenty serpents in its area of effect, the electrical discharge burning across scales.

Then Jack heard it, a sharp CRACK that made his enhanced hearing flinch despite having no apparent source beyond the floor itself.

He looked down.

The glass beneath his feet was fracturing, hairline cracks spreading outward from his position in a spiderweb pattern.

The structural failure was imminent despite magical reinforcement that should have prevented such damage.

The cracks weren’t deep yet, but they were spreading, each fracture branching into smaller fissures that threatened to compromise the floor’s integrity.

Father Caelen noticed at the same time that his weathered features showed his confusion.

The old priest began channeling divine energy, golden light gathering around his hands as he prepared to cast Light of Caelora to enhance Jack’s combat capabilities.

”Wait...” Jack started, but Father Caelen had already released the blessing.

Golden radiance washed over Jack, the supportive technique boosting his stats by 50 points across all categories as energy interfaced with his body.
