I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 582: Floor 6 - Virulent Fog

Blood dripped from his mouth as he spoke, internal hemorrhaging that Dragon’s Flesh was addressing but hadn’t fully healed yet.

”But it worked. The Phase-Winder was too fast to fight normally. I had to slow time to track its movement, then let it swallow me to bypass the enhanced scales protecting its exterior.”

He looked toward where the exit archway had become visible among the floating islands, the dungeon’s progression mechanics revealing the path forward now that the field boss had been eliminated.

”And I learned something valuable. Abyssal Step isn’t just a movement technique. It’s a temporal manipulation that creates windows in which I can perceive and act on threats faster than normal reflexes can process. That’s going to be useful for whatever’s waiting on the remaining floors.”

Father Caelen helped Jack to his feet, the healing having progressed enough that standing no longer threatened to collapse his still-regenerating internal organs.

”Can you continue? Or do you need time to fully recover?”

Jack tested his body’s responsiveness, providing feedback that full functionality had been restored despite lingering damage that would take hours to heal fully.

His ribs still ached where crystalline fangs had crushed them, organs still protested movement that stretched tissue Dragon’s Flesh hadn’t finished repairing, but he could fight if necessary.

”I can continue,” he confirmed, wiping blood from his chin with the back of his hand. ”Whatever’s on the sixth floor, I doubt it’ll be more immediately lethal than being eaten alive by a serpent.”

They moved toward the exit, leaving the floating islands and cosmic void behind as they progressed deeper into the dungeon’s inverted structure.

Jack’s mind was already processing what he’d learned.

Abyssal Step’s time manipulation creates a tactical advantage he hadn’t fully recognized before, the transformation into pure lightning proving his body could survive transitions that should have been impossible.

The growing understanding that each floor was teaching him to use capabilities he’d been carrying without recognizing their full potential.

The silver veins on his right arm pulsed with a steady rhythm as they approached the archway, a physical reminder that this dungeon was changing him in ways beyond simple skill development.

Whatever waited on the remaining floors would reveal more about what he was becoming, and whether the convergence of three impossible bloodlines would prove a salvation or catastrophe for everything Sarin had built.

The transition to the sixth floor was subtler than previous progressions.

There was no dramatic environmental shift or immediate threat assessment required.

Just a stone archway opening into a landscape shrouded by fog so thick it reduced visibility to five feet in any direction.

But this wasn’t the purple corruption mist that had filled the earlier floors.

This was different; a greenish tint to the dense vapor could be seen, a chemical smell that made Jack’s enhanced perception immediately recognize what they were walking into.

A concentrated toxin suspended in gaseous form, the kind of atmospheric contamination that would kill normal humans in minutes and prove lethal to even enhanced warriors if exposure continued long enough.

Father Caelen recognized it at the same time, his weathered features hardening as he began channeling divine energy. ”Virulent Fog. I’ve heard of floors like this, designed to test resistance to environmental hazards rather than direct combat. The poison will kill anything that can’t maintain constant purification.”

Golden light erupted from the old priest’s hands, holy energy spreading in a sphere around both warriors as it began actively pushing back the toxic mist.

Jack breathed normally, his enhanced perception noting something significant; the poison wasn’t affecting him at all.

His lungs processed the toxic air without issue, his skin showed no irritation from direct contact with the mist, and his enhanced constitution treated the lethal contamination as if it were normal atmosphere.

Dragon’s Flesh.

A passive ability that provides immunity to natural poisons and seventy-five percent resistance to magical toxins.

The Virulent Fog apparently qualified as natural despite being concentrated to lethal levels, making this entire floor essentially harmless to Jack’s enhanced physiology.

”You can drop the purification,” Jack stated, his tactical awareness recognizing the mana expenditure was unnecessary for his protection. ”The poison doesn’t affect me.”

Father Caelen maintained the golden sphere for several more seconds before carefully reducing the output, testing whether the poison would immediately harm Jack once the divine protection ceased.

When no visible effect manifested, the old priest let the purification field collapse completely, conserving his mana for whatever challenges might require it on later floors.

”Well,” Father Caelen observed, producing his flask for a measured sip that revealed he found the situation mildly amusing despite its inherent danger. ”That makes this floor significantly less threatening than intended. Shall we proceed quickly to the exit?”

Jack’s tactical mind considered the question, then reached into his soul space to summon the bound Disaster-class serpent. The massive creature materialized in the fog, its enhanced senses immediately tracking both warriors as it awaited commands through their Soul Link.

’Carry us to the exit,’ Jack projected mentally, his consciousness interfacing with the bound creature’s awareness. ’Move at full speed, we can navigate the poison without concern.’

The serpent lowered its massive head in a gesture of compliance, allowing both warriors to mount before it began moving through the toxic mist with speed that would cover a significant distance quickly.

The fog parted before its bulk, visibility terrible but irrelevant, as the creature’s supernatural senses navigated without relying on sight.

They traveled for ten minutes at a pace that should have brought them to the floor’s far side based on typical dungeon dimensions.

But when the fog cleared slightly, Jack recognized their surroundings with immediate certainty.

They were back at the entrance archway from the fifth floor. The exact position where they’d started, despite having moved in a straight line for an extended period at considerable speed.

”The floor loops,” Father Caelen observed, recognition of a mechanism he’d encountered in other dungeons.

”Movement at speed returns us to the origin point. It’s a spatial distortion designed to trap anyone trying to rush through the poison. They run themselves in circles until the toxin kills them.”

Jack dismissed the bound serpent back to his soul space, his tactical mind processing the implication.

Normal warriors would panic in a lethal atmosphere.

They would try to escape quickly, doom themselves to an infinite loop until poison or exhaustion claimed them.

But he was immune to the toxin, which meant he had time to figure out the actual progression mechanic.

”We walk,” he stated with certainty, beginning to move through the fog at a casual pace that felt wrong when surrounded by lethal contamination.

”Slowly, calmly, like the poison isn’t actively trying to kill us. The floor tests composure under pressure, rewards those who can maintain calm despite environmental threat.”

Father Caelen fell into step beside him, the old priest’s decades of dungeon experience allowing him to recognize the logic, even though it contradicted every survival instinct screaming to flee the deadly atmosphere.

”A psychological trap. Punishes the natural response to danger, rewards behavior that appears suicidal in context. Clever design for a floor specifically built around poison.”

They walked in silence for several minutes,

Jack’s enhanced perception tracked their progress through the thick fog.

This time, the environment didn’t loop; they were covering a great distance, moving deeper into the floor rather than being spatially redirected to the starting position.

”This dungeon is strange,” Jack said quietly, his mind turning toward questions that had been accumulating since the first floor’s inverted healing/damage mechanics.
