I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 481: You Will Drown Here

The workers didn’t need to be told twice. They abandoned stations immediately, the sound of their retreat echoing through the hall as they fled toward safer areas of the castle.

”You can’t be serious,” the Third Tier ambassador said, his tone carrying disbelief. ”You’re evacuating because one messenger claims to have seen a Soul Warden? This is paranoia. Weakness! The Third Tier doesn’t bow to rumors and...”

”The Third Tier can do whatever it wants,” the clan master interrupted, his voice carrying finality. ”But the Iron Soot Clan has survived for three hundred years by recognizing real threats and responding appropriately. A Soul Warden claiming the lower floors is a real threat!”

He turned to face the ambassador directly, his nine-foot frame making the crimson-skinned demon look almost small by comparison.

”You’re welcome to stay and negotiate with him yourself. Demonstrate that courage you’re so proud of. Or you can retreat to the eastern wing with everyone else and hope he’s in a diplomatic mood.”

The ambassador’s tattooed face worked through several expressions before answering. ”You’re actually afraid of him.”

”I’m appropriately cautious of someone who can seal multiple floors and kill demons with gestures,” the clan master corrected.

”There’s a difference between fear and knowing when someone with power is going to walk in your home and know you can do nothing!”

He gestured to guards stationed near the hall’s entrance. ”Post watchers every hundred feet across the castle. The moment you see anything approaching, sound the alarm. Do not engage. Do not attempt to stop him. Just alert me immediately.”

The guards saluted and dispersed to their respective positions. Scrambling to figure out where to go.

It was clear they never had to deal with such problems before.

”Prepare offerings?” the Third Tier ambassador repeated mockingly. ”What kind of offering do you give to a Soul Warden? Gold? Materials? Slaves?”

”I don’t know,” the clan master admitted, settling back onto his throne despite having just ordered evacuation. ”But I know what happens to clans that don’t at least try to negotiate. The last Soul Warden gave one chance. One opportunity to submit peacefully. The clans that refused...”

He trailed off...

”Were bound,” the ambassador finished, understanding dawning despite his earlier dismissiveness. ”Their entire populations turned into bound soldiers for his army.”

”Yes,” the clan master confirmed. ”And if this new Soul Warden follows the same pattern, then we have perhaps thirty minutes to decide whether the Iron Soot Clan tries to fight and loses everything, or submits and hopes for terms that let us maintain some autonomy.”

The great hall felt colder now despite the forge fires still burning.

The clan master’s breathing was controlled, his posture was calm, even though the panic threatened to break through.

The Third Tier ambassador opened his mouth to respond, then froze. ”Do you hear that?”

The clan master tilted his head, listening.

A series of footsteps could be heard approaching from the main entrance, indicating a leisurely pace, as if those individuals had no particular need to rush.

”He’s here,” the clan master whispered, his burning eyes fixed on the great hall’s entrance. ”Twenty minutes. He gave us twenty minutes to panic, and now he’s here.”

The Third Tier ambassador took an involuntary step backward, his earlier bravado evaporating as reality set in. ”What do we do?”

”We see if diplomacy works,” the clan master replied, though his tone suggested he wasn’t optimistic. ”And if it doesn’t...”

He didn’t finish the sentence because the footsteps were getting closer.

------

The transformation of Granite Sovereign’s territory was terrifying.

What had been solid dunes became liquid in seconds, the entire wasteland converting into a churning sea of black sand that defied natural physics.

Waves rose and fell, each surge carrying enough force to crush stone.

The ground beneath Pho’s feet stopped being ground.

Instead, it became a shifting surface that tried to drag him down with every step.

The Hydra’s thirty-five heads thrashed as the sand pulled at its coils, trying to drown the serpent in obsidian granules that flowed like water but were hit with the weight of crushed stone.

Several heads vanished beneath the surface, swallowed by black sand that compressed with hydraulic force.

Then those heads erupted back through the surface seconds later, regeneration through Soul Link making drowning a temporary inconvenience.

The Hydra’s bodies reformed even as the sand tried to compress them into pulp, the creature’s regeneration and the soul link regeneration outpaced the elemental’s attempts to destroy it through attrition.

The Voidweaver shrieked as the ground beneath its eight legs liquefied completely, the spider’s massive form sinking into black sand that wrapped around its chitinous body.

Spikes erupted from below, driving upward through the creature’s abdomen, punching through armor that should have deflected normal weapons.

Venom sprayed across the wasteland as the spider’s organs were pulped by obsidian blades.

The Voidweaver’s multiple eyes went dark as brain matter was destroyed by sand that had become a surgical instrument in Granite Sovereign’s control.

Then the eyes reignited with red lightning four minutes and thirty-seven seconds later, the creature reforming through Soul Link as if death were nothing more than a mild setback.

The spider emerged from the sand fully healed, its body reconstructed from the essence of Jack’s binding that had anchored to its soul.

The minotaurs fared worse in the immediate aftermath.

Their heavy builds and dense muscles made them sink faster than the other creatures, black sand swallowing them to their shoulders within seconds.

Warriors who’d fought with tactical precision moments before now struggled just to keep their heads above the churning surface.

Spikes drove upward through the sand, impaling minotaurs from below.

The creatures roared as obsidian blades punched through their spines, hearts, and skulls.

Blood mixed with black sand, creating patterns that swirled through the liquid terrain like oil in water.

Then they began regenerating. One by one, the Soul Link pulled them back from death’s edge, reforming bodies that had been destroyed by terrain that fought with intelligence and malice.

The minotaurs didn’t retreat. Their binding makes survival secondary to their master’s commands.

Pho stood at the edge of the liquefied wasteland, his blackish-blue form radiating cold that froze the shifting sand wherever he stepped.

The Black Ice Soul state made him immune to the terrain manipulation.

Wherever his feet touched, the liquid sand crystallized into solid ice that held his weight despite the elemental’s attempts to pull him under.

”Territory transformation,” Pho observed, his voice carrying across the churning wasteland despite the sound of sand grinding against sand.

”Converting a mile radius into the extension of your body. Impressive display of earth magic.”

Granite Sovereign’s form had dispersed throughout the wasteland, no longer maintaining a centralized body. The elemental existed everywhere and nowhere simultaneously.

Its consciousness was distributed across millions of tons of black sand that moved as a unified organism.

”You cannot locate my core,” the elemental’s voice resonated from the terrain itself, coming from every direction at once.

”You cannot strike what you cannot find. I am the wasteland. Every grain answers to my will. You will drown here, blessed one. You and all the bound creatures serving your master.”

A wave twenty feet high rose from the liquid sand, curling over like ocean surf before crashing down on the Hydra with force that would have shattered castle walls.

The serpent vanished beneath tons of compressed obsidian, crushed to paste by a pressure that exceeded that of industrial machinery.
