I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 471: Where was Jack? [Golden Ticket Bonus]

Jack’s jaw clenched as the lightning entered his system through the contact point at his skull, flowing downward through his body with force that made his muscles spasm immediately.

The electrical current was nothing like his own red lightning. This was ancient power, refined over millennia, compressed into an essence that transcended simple elemental affinity.

It felt like his skin was melting.

The golden lightning spread through his body in branching patterns that followed nerve pathways, blood vessels, and bone structure.

Everywhere it touched, Jack’s flesh responded with agony that defied description.

The burning wasn’t external; it came from within, from cells being forced to become something they were never designed to be.

His bones broke.

He could feel them fracturing under the pressure of the power they weren’t designed to contain.

Ribs cracked with sounds like snapping wood. Vertebrae compressed against each other with grinding force. His skull felt like it was splitting down the middle as lightning carved new pathways through brain matter, burning corridors through tissue that had no natural capacity for divine electrical current.

Then the bones reformed.

Restructured to channel electrical current without shattering under the load.

The healing happened in seconds, but those seconds contained lifetimes of pain compressed into moments that felt eternal. Breaking and reforming.

Each cycle was faster than the last, each iteration producing something more capable of withstanding what was being forced into it.

Jack felt his blood vessels rupture throughout his body simultaneously.

Capillaries in his eyes bursting in cascades that turned his vision red, arteries in his chest detonating like overpressured pipes, and veins in his extremities splitting open as golden lightning proved too intense for normal circulation to handle.

His cardiovascular system destroyed itself completely and rebuilt itself so that it could withstand a Demi-God’s power flowing through blood that was rapidly becoming something other than purely human.

His heart stopped for three seconds, Jack’s heart ceased beating entirely as the lightning rewrote cardiac muscle into something that could pump blood now infused with electrical essence.

Those three seconds felt like drowning in fire, consciousness fragmenting as oxygen stopped reaching his brain.

He could feel himself dying in those seconds. The darkness was pulling at the edges of his awareness with certainty.

Bump! Bump!

Then a rhythm that synchronized perfectly with the golden lightning now flowing through every cell of his body, each pulse sending electrical discharge through pathways that hadn’t existed seconds ago.

Jack felt his irises transform, the red glare being consumed and replaced by golden electrical discharge that pulsed with every heartbeat.

The change wasn’t cosmetic. His vision sharpened beyond anything he’d experienced, perception expanding to see electrical currents flowing through the air around him, magnetic fields underlying reality itself, the fundamental connections between all things that conducted power.

The world looked different. Everything charged with potential that his new eyes could read like text on a page.

For one eternal moment, Jack existed as nothing but agony given consciousness.

Every nerve screaming simultaneously.

Every muscle locked in spasm.

Every bone was vibrating at frequencies that should have reduced them to powder, but instead forged them into something that could survive what was happening.

He didn’t fight it. Not because he had the strength to resist, but because he didn’t.

But because Tharaxis had told him not to, and in that moment of absolute agony, trusting the dragon’s instruction was the only rational choice available.

Then the contract was sealed.

The system notifications appeared through the haze of pain, registering somewhere in Jack’s fragmenting consciousness before being swallowed by the darkness that rushed in from every direction simultaneously.

Jack collapsed onto the plateau’s stone, his body no longer responding to commands from a mind that was rapidly losing the battle to remain conscious.

The rough rock against his cheek was the last physical sensation he registered.

Everything else had been consumed by the transformation still working through his system.

The last thing he saw before darkness claimed him completely was Tharaxis’s golden eyes, watching from above with satisfaction that carried the weight of three centuries of waiting finally reaching its conclusion.

”Rest, little Soul Warden,” the dragon’s voice echoed from an impossible distance, thunder given gentleness that the ancient creature had probably not expressed in decades. ”When you wake, you’ll understand what you’ve become.”

------------

Rhys sat on a fallen log near the floor’s entrance portal, Tempest’s Edge resting across his knees. His silver hair was damp with sweat despite the forest’s cool temperature.

The past week had been brutal. Floor Four’s challenge wasn’t a single powerful boss like the Ice Drake. It was attrition.

Wave after wave of forest creatures. Treants that regenerated unless burned completely.

Vine serpents that could reform from a single cut.

Shadow wolves that hunted in packs of twenty. And at the center of it all, the Ancient Guardian.

A massive treant-like entity that Rhys had finally brought down after three days of continuous combat.

But they’d done it. Floor Four was cleared.

”Master is taking his time,” Brutus rumbled from where the minotaur stood guard near the portal. The Alpha had proven invaluable during the floor clear, his raw strength and tactical awareness complementing Rhys’s speed and magic perfectly.

”Jack’s probably sealing floors,” Rhys replied, though his tone carried uncertainty. ”He said he needed to clear through Floor Nine quickly. That takes time.”

’But it’s been a week,’ Slyph said from her position on Rhys’s shoulder, her green aura pulsing with concern. ’That’s longer than usual. Normally he checks in through... whatever method he uses to know when floors are cleared.’

Rhys had wondered about that himself. How did Jack know the moment a floor boss died? How did he arrive so quickly to seal them? The blood contract didn’t fully explain Jack’s abilities.

”Pho,” Rhys called to the Deathfrost Demon who stood twenty feet away, his blank white eyes scanning the forest as if expecting threats despite the floor being cleared.

”Why can’t you reach Jack through the connection?”

Pho’s expression didn’t change, but Rhys had learned to read the subtle shifts in the demon’s posture. Right now, that posture conveyed something Rhys had never seen before.

Uncertainty.

”I don’t know,” Pho admitted, his voice carrying an edge that made Rhys sit up straighter. ”There’s nothing. No sense of Jack’s presence at all. It’s as if he’s...” Pho paused, clearly reluctant to finish the thought.

”As if he’s what?” Rhys pressed, his hand tightening on Tempest’s Edge.

”Gone,” Pho said flatly. ”He’s not dead. The contract would break if he died, and you’d feel it immediately. But gone in a way that suppresses even soul magic connections.”

Slyph’s aura flickered with alarm. ”That’s not normal. What could do that?”

”Very few things,” Pho replied. ”Divine intervention. Powerful spatial magic. Or...” The demon’s blank eyes narrowed. ”Exposure to something so powerful that its mere presence overwhelms lesser magical connections.”

Rhys felt his stomach tighten. ”You think something happened to Jack.”

”I think something is happening to Jack,” Pho corrected. ”Whether that something is good or bad remains to be seen.”

Brutus shifted, his massive frame turning toward the group. ”Should we search for him? The master gave me to serve Rhys, but if Master Jack is in danger...”

”We wouldn’t know where to start,” Pho said, his tone pragmatic despite the concern underlying it. ”Jack was last on Floor Twenty-Three, hunting Stormfang. That was a week ago. He could be anywhere in the tower by now.”

”So we just... wait?” Slyph asked, frustration evident in her voice.

”We wait,” Pho confirmed. ”And hope that whatever Jack encountered, he’s strong enough to survive it.”

The group fell into an uneasy silence, broken only by the forest’s ambient sounds around them.

Minutes stretched into an hour. Rhys tried to meditate, to recover his depleted mana and stamina, but his mind kept circling back to the same question.

Where was Jack?
