I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 280: This is so exciting!

Octavia’s fingers tightened on the map’s edge, the only visible sign of the fury that erupted in her chest.

Her mind raced through implications, through the dawning realization that the courtship had been a trap and they’d all been blind to it.

’Joseph Meredith. House Meredith, which swears to no one. Which maintains relationships with multiple noble families without committing to any particular alliance. Which would be perfectly positioned to...’

She forced the thoughts down, burying them beneath the calm facade she’d been trained since childhood to maintain.

The representatives were watching, looking for weakness, for any sign that House Kaiser’s control was slipping.

She couldn’t give them that satisfaction.

”Thank you, Seraphina,” Octavia said, her voice perfectly level despite the storm raging beneath her skin. ”We’ll discuss this after the meeting.”

Seraphina’s eyes widened fractionally, the only indication of surprise at Octavia’s decision to continue rather than to react immediately. But she nodded once and stepped back to her position.

Octavia turned back to the table, to the representatives who were watching her with renewed interest.

”As I was saying,” she continued, her tone businesslike, ”the Arydn forces will position here, at the eastern approach. House Veyra will take the northern gate. Dustspire, you’ll anchor the western defenses. Mistfang, I want your forces held in reserve for rapid response to wherever Marcus commits his main assault.”

She looked up, meeting each representative’s gaze in turn. ”And the Starfell forces will position at the southern approach, where intelligence suggests Marcus is least likely to attack. A quiet posting. One where you can reflect on the value of keeping your opinions about command structure to yourself.”

The Starfell emissary’s jaw tightened, but he said nothing.

He was a smart man, learning from recent mistakes.

”Questions?” Octavia asked.

”Timeline?” the Arydn representative asked, his earlier confidence tempered with newfound respect. ”When do you expect Marcus to move?”

”Within two days,” Octavia replied. ”His scouts have been probing our outer defenses. He knows we’re aware of his presence. Waiting longer only gives us more time to prepare, which works against him.”

”And Jack Kaiser?” the Veyra emissary asked carefully. ”When do you expect your brother’s return?”

Octavia’s expression didn’t change. ”When he’s needed. Which, given his timing, will probably be at exactly the moment that causes maximum chaos for our enemies.”

A few representatives actually smiled at that. Jack’s reputation for dramatic timing had apparently spread beyond family circles.

”Dismissed,” Octavia said. ”Coordinate with your captains. I want defensive positions established by tomorrow morning.”

The representatives began filing out, conversations already starting about troop movements and supply lines.

The Starfell emissary left last, his pristine white cloak swirling behind him with considerably less confidence than when he’d entered.

When the door closed behind the final representative, Octavia sagged against the table, her carefully maintained composure cracking.

”Annabelle,” she said quietly, the word carrying all the fury and fear she’d been suppressing. ”Joseph Meredith took Annabelle.”

”It appears so,” Seraphina confirmed, moving to stand beside her. ”The guards reported seeing them leave together through the eastern gate. She went willingly, apparently excited about wherever they were going.”

”Of course she did.” Octavia’s hands clenched into fists. ”She trusted him. We all did. He spent weeks building that trust, bringing flowers, being perfectly courteous...” Her voice dropped to something dangerous. ”And we let him walk our sister right out the front gate.”

”We couldn’t have known,” Seraphina said, though her tone suggested she was angry at herself as well. ”Joseph Meredith had no obvious connections to Marcus Thorne. House Meredith maintains neutrality with everyone.”

”Except apparently with the man planning to invade us,” Octavia snapped. Then she took a breath, forcing herself to think strategically rather than emotionally. ”Does Celeste know?”

”Not yet. She’s with the Arydn captain, discussing cavalry tactics.”

”Good. Keep it that way for now.” Octavia straightened, her expression hardening. ”If word spreads that House Kaiser’s youngest daughter has been taken, it’ll undermine everything we’re trying to accomplish. The allied houses will question our ability to protect even our own family.”

”And if Marcus uses her as leverage?” Seraphina asked quietly.

Octavia’s eyes flashed black for just a moment before returning to blue. ”Then he’ll discover exactly how badly he miscalculated. Because nothing, absolutely nothing, will stop me from getting my sister back.”

-------

The mercenary camp sprawled across the valley like a military city, fifteen thousand men creating the organized chaos of an army preparing for war.

Cook fires burned in neat rows.

Weapon racks gleamed in afternoon light.

The sounds of training, of shouts and clashing steel, created a constant background noise as they prepared to march.

Joseph Meredith rode through the camp’s outer perimeter with Annabelle seated behind him on the horse, her arms wrapped around his waist with the trust of someone who thought this was all a grand adventure.

She’d been talking almost nonstop since they left the Kaiser estate, her excitement about seeing ”real mercenaries” and ”an actual war camp” making Joseph’s jaw clench tighter with each enthusiastic observation.

”Oh, look at all the tents!” Annabelle said, her voice carrying genuine delight. ”They’re so organized! I thought mercenary camps were supposed to be chaotic, but this is quaint.”

”Marcus runs a tight operation,” Joseph replied, guiding the horse between rows of soldiers who stopped to stare at the young noble woman riding through their midst. ”He doesn’t tolerate disorder.”

”How impressive!” Annabelle leaned to the side, trying to get a better view of a group of mercenaries practicing sword forms. ”Do you think they’d let me sketch them? The way they move is fascinating, all that controlled violence...”

Joseph didn’t answer, just continued guiding the horse toward the camp’s center where Marcus’s command tent stood.

The largest structure in the valley, its faded House Thorne colors marking it as the operation’s nerve center.

Guards flanked the entrance, mercenaries whose scarred faces. They straightened as Joseph approached, recognizing him immediately.

”Is he inside?” Joseph asked.

”Waiting for you,” one guard confirmed, his eyes tracking Annabelle with the kind of assessment that made Joseph’s skin crawl. ”The prize, I assume?”

”Just announce us,” Joseph snapped, his patience for mercenary humor was already exhausted.

The guard ducked inside the tent, returning moments later with a gesture that suggested they could enter.

Joseph dismounted first, then helped Annabelle down with the courtesy he’d maintained throughout their courtship.

She landed lightly, already looking around the camp with an artist’s eyes that cataloged details most people would miss.

”Come on,” Joseph said, his hand on her elbow guiding her toward the tent entrance. ”Marcus is expecting us.”

”Oh, this is so exciting!” Annabelle’s enthusiasm hadn’t dimmed despite the context. ”I’ve never met a warlord before. Do you think he’ll be dramatic? I hope he’s dramatic. The dramatic ones make the best sketches.”

Joseph felt something twist in his chest. Guilt, maybe. Or just the realization that he’d delivered an innocent girl to someone who definitely wouldn’t appreciate her artistic commentary.

They stepped through the tent flap into the command center beyond.

The interior was exactly what Joseph had expected. Maps covered every surface, weighted down by daggers and stones.

A campaign table dominated the center, its scarred wood bearing the marks of countless planning sessions.

Weapon racks lined the walls, displaying everything from common swords to exotic blades that showed off Marcus’s wealth.

And at the table’s head stood Marcus Thorne himself.
