I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 275: Sanctuaries

Jack remained seated on the throne, his body settling into the cushioned red velvet as if the seat had been made specifically for him. The trembling had stopped. The tower’s announcement had faded into silence.

But something else was happening now.

A presence pressed against his consciousness. Waiting for acknowledgement.

The system interface flickered to life in his vision, but this time it felt different.

[DOMAIN ACQUIRED]

The words appeared in bold text, larger than normal notifications.

[Congratulations, Jack Kaiser]

[You have claimed Floor 25 as your personal domain]

[As the Soul Warden, this floor now responds to your will]

[New privileges unlocked]

[New responsibilities acquired]

Jack’s fingers tightened slightly on the throne’s armrests, his mind processing what ”personal domain” actually meant.

[Skill Unlocked: Teleporter]

[Description: As the domain’s master, you may freely travel to Floor 25 from any location within the tower or the mortal realm. Cooldown: None.]

Jack’s eyebrows rose. Instant transportation to a secure base of operations anywhere in the tower or back home?

’That’s... incredibly useful,’ he thought.

The system continued, information flowing through his consciousness with methodical precision.

[Floor 25 currently houses 1,247 creatures]

[Classification: Dragons (23), Phoenixes (7), Spirits (891), Abyssal Creatures (15), Demons (47), Fairies (89), Celestial Beasts (34), Leviathans (8), Wisps (67), Skywhales (3), Sandworms (12), Sprites (45), Salamanders (6)]

[These creatures reside here due to contracts established by the previous Soul Warden]

[As the new domain master, you inherit authority over existing contracts]

[To obtain resources from domain creatures, negotiate with the strongest entity present]

Jack processed the numbers. Over a thousand creatures living on his floor, each one bound by contracts made decades or centuries ago. And to get something as simple as a phoenix feather, he’d need to establish rapport with whoever ruled these beings.

’Who is the strongest entity here?’ Jack asked the system, curious about the hierarchy he’d just inherited.

[Analyzing domain residents...]

[Strongest Entity: Emberion]

[Ancient Magma Dragon]

[Level: 87]

[Current Location: Volcanic Peaks, Southern Region of Floor 25]

[Warning: Emberion remembers the previous Soul Wardens. Approach with caution.]

A level 87 ancient dragon. Jack filed that information away for future reference. Approaching Emberion would require preparation, possibly diplomacy. Fighting something nearly seventy levels above him seemed inadvisable at best.

But the system wasn’t finished.

[Domain Expansion Available]

[Current Floor Size: 15 square miles]

[Death Tokens can be invested to expand territory and create specialized habitats]

[Recommendation: Construct sanctuaries for contracted demons to increase loyalty and efficiency]

Jack leaned forward slightly, his interest sharpening. The ability to shape his domain, to build infrastructure that would house and strengthen his forces? That changed everything.

’What kind of sanctuaries?’ he asked.

The system responded with detailed specifications, information appearing in organized lists.

[Available Sanctuary Types:]

[Radiant Spire - Light-aligned demons]

[Cost: 250,000 Death Tokens]

[Provides: Enhanced regeneration, radiant magic enhancement, loyalty bonus]

[Umbral Nest - Dark-aligned demons]

[Cost: 250,000 Death Tokens]

[Provides: Stealth bonuses, shadow magic enhancement, loyalty bonus]

[Mossgrove Warren - Earth-aligned demons]

[Cost: 250,000 Death Tokens]

[Provides: Defensive bonuses, earth magic enhancement, loyalty bonus]

[Galecrest Haven - Wind-aligned demons]

[Cost: 250,000 Death Tokens]

[Provides: Speed bonuses, wind magic enhancement, loyalty bonus]

[Mistveil Grotto - Water-aligned demons]

[Cost: 250,000 Death Tokens]

[Provides: Healing bonuses, water magic enhancement, loyalty bonus]

[Ember Bastion - Fire-aligned demons]

[Cost: 250,000 Death Tokens]

[Provides: Damage bonuses, fire magic enhancement, loyalty bonus]

[Note: Sanctuaries can be upgraded to higher tiers using additional Death Token investment]

[Upgrades provide stronger bonuses and unlock new features]

Jack studied the list, studying costs and benefits with the precision of someone who’d learned that resources determined survival. Six sanctuaries at 250,000 tokens each meant 1,500,000 total investment.

He currently has 37,052,250 Death Tokens.

The cost was more than manageable. It was a fraction of his accumulated wealth.

’The loyalty bonuses alone make it worthwhile,’ Jack thought, remembering how demon armies functioned. Loyalty determined whether forces obeyed orders during chaos, whether they fought to the death or fled at the first sign of danger. Investing in infrastructure that increased that loyalty was just smart resource management.

And the magic enhancements? Those would stack with whatever natural abilities his demons possessed, creating force multipliers that could turn average fighters into elite troops.

’Build all six sanctuaries,’ Jack commanded, his decision made quickly but not rashly. This was exactly the kind of investment that would pay dividends in future conflicts.

[Confirmation Required: Construct all six elemental sanctuaries?]

[Total Cost: 1,500,000 Death Tokens]

[Current Balance: 37,052,250]

[New Balance: 35,552,250]

[YES] or [NO]

’Yes.’

The transaction activated immediately, and Jack felt something shift in the air around him.

Reality itself was adjusting to accommodate new construction, space being allocated, and foundations being laid through mechanisms he didn’t fully understand.

Then the floor shook.

Not violently. Not like an earthquake that would send furniture toppling or walls cracking. Just a steady, rhythmic tremor that pulsed through stone and air, each pulse carrying the weight of creation from a god.

Jack stood from the throne. His group tensed, Kyren’s single arm coming up defensively, Pho’s blank white eyes closed as he waited for the low tremor to end.

S remained perfectly calm, still sitting on Fluffy’s back.

”Already making changes to your domain,” S observed, his tone carrying approval. ”You’ve figured out how this works remarkably quickly.”

Through the throne room’s windows, Jack could see the landscape transforming. In the distance, structures were rising from the glowing hills, emerging from the earth itself as if they’d always been there but simply hadn’t been visible until now.

To the north, a spire of pure white stone spiraled upward, its surface gleaming with light that seemed to come from within rather than reflecting the eternal sunset. The Radiant Spire. The sanctuary for light-aligned demons, it looked like temples Jack had seen in history books depicting ancient civilizations.

To the east, where shadows pooled despite the ever-present light, darkness coalesced into a structure. The Umbral Nest. Its walls were black as midnight, its towers twisted into shapes like tree roots.

To the south, the earth itself rose and reformed, trees growing at impossible speeds, roots and branches interweaving to create living architecture. The Mossgrove Warren. A fortress made of nature itself, walls of wood and stone that pulsed with life, leaves already sprouting from surfaces that should have been bare lumber.

To the west, wind carved channels through the mountains creating spires and arches that caught air currents and transformed them into music as wind passed through them. The Galecrest Haven.

To the southwest, near what looked like a lake that definitely hadn’t been there before, water and stone merged into structures that seemed to shimmer with moisture despite being solid. The Mistveil Grotto. Towers that looked like frozen waterfalls, archways that dripped with perpetual rain that somehow never formed puddles.

And to the southeast, flame became solid without losing its essential nature. The Ember Bastion. Walls of crystallized fire, towers that burned without consuming themselves. Even with them being some distance away, it gave off enough heat so anyone or anything could feel warm.

All six sanctuaries completed their formation within perhaps thirty seconds, rising from nothing to full construction with efficiency that defied physics and common sense. But this was the tower, and the tower operated on rules that transcended normal reality.

The shaking stopped. Everything settled into a new equilibrium, the landscape forever changed by Jack’s investment.

[Construction Complete]
