Reborn in Football to Build Top Clubs from English League Two

190: The Youth Storm of Defeat and Honor (Part 1)Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium was shrouded in the cold December night.

A biting wind howled in from the Yorkshire moors, making the flags on the stands snap.

Lin Feng sat in the away team’s dugout, his gaze sweeping over the excited home fans opposite.

They waved scarves and loudly sang their team’s anthem, clearly confident about tonight’s match.

”Boss, the lads are ready.”

Old John walked up to Lin Feng, a hint of worry in his voice.

The lineup fielded tonight had an average age of under 19, with the youngest, Liam Jones, being only 15.

”Relax, John.”

Lin Feng’s voice was calm.

”Sometimes, youth is the greatest weapon.”

His gaze fell on the young players warming up.

John Walker repeatedly practiced diving saves in front of the goal, each jump full of power.

Liam Jones and Oliver Baker were practicing passing drills, their chemistry impressively in sync.

These kids had something that the veterans had lost—fearless courage.

Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler was providing pre-match analysis.

”Hartlepool United have fielded a surprisingly young lineup tonight.”

”Goalkeeper John Walker is only 17, and striker Liam Jones is an even younger 15.”

”Such an arrangement makes one wonder if Lin Feng has strategically given up on this competition.”

The guest pundit, former England international Alan Shearer, shook his head.

”I understand the necessity of rotation, but fielding such a young lineup in a crucial semi-final match is too risky.”

”Doncaster Rovers are no weak team; they’ve performed quite well in League One this season.”

The stadium’s big screen displayed both teams’ starting lineups.

The home team, Doncaster Rovers, deployed their strongest lineup, a 4-4-2 formation.

Experienced striker Paul Heffernan would be their main threat tonight.

The Ireland forward had already scored 12 League goals this season and was in top form.

The away team, Hartlepool United, featured an entirely young squad.

A 4-3-3 formation, with John Walker in goal; an 18-year-old right-back Marcus Brown partnered with a 19-year-old center-back duo in defense; the midfield was led by 17-year-old Bradley Johnson; and the attack consisted of Liam Jones, Oliver Baker, and another youth team striker forming the attacking trident.

The average age of this lineup was even younger than some U21 national teams.

The referee’s whistle blew, and the match officially began.

Doncaster Rovers kicked off first; they clearly wanted to leverage their experience and put pressure on these kids from the start.

But Hartlepool United’s youngsters were not intimidated by their opponents’ momentum.

They displayed the courage of a newborn calf on the field.

Bradley Johnson’s performance in midfield was particularly outstanding.

Although not tall, the 17-year-old central midfielder possessed delicate technique and precise passing.

Every pass he made was thoughtful, completely unlike a rookie just starting out.

In the 8th minute, Johnson received a pass from a teammate near the center circle.

Facing a double-team from two Doncaster Rovers players, he calmly distributed the ball to Marcus Brown on the right wing.

The young right-back, upon receiving the ball, did not opt for a conservative back-pass but boldly advanced forward.

His breakthrough earned the team a free-kick opportunity in the attacking third.

Lin Feng quietly observed the match’s progression from the sidelines.

The Player Radar module in his mind continuously updated each player’s status in real-time.

Most of the young players’ data showed green, indicating they were in good form.

Only goalkeeper John Walker’s data displayed a light yellow, likely due to a slight impact from nervousness.

But as the match progressed, this nervousness was gradually fading.

Doncaster’s head coach appeared somewhat anxious on the sidelines.

He had initially thought his team would easily take the lead against such a young squad.

But reality proved him completely wrong.

These young players were not only technically skilled, but more importantly, their mental state was excellent.

They ran tirelessly on the field, compensating for their lack of experience and physical presence with aggressive pressing.

In the 25th minute, Doncaster Rovers had their first real scoring opportunity.

Heffernan received a cross inside the box, and his header was tricky.

But John Walker’s reaction was even faster.

The young goalkeeper made a flying save, tipping the ball over the crossbar.

This save earned enthusiastic applause from the away fans in the stands.

Though few in number, these Hartlepool fans, who had traveled a long distance, were proud of the kids’ performance.

The match continued, and the situation on the field gradually became clear.

While Doncaster Rovers held an advantage in experience and physical confrontation, they found it difficult to break through Hartlepool United’s tight defensive system.

Although these young players were not tall, they ran actively and covered positions promptly.

More importantly, they were completely unafraid to foul.

Whenever a Doncaster Rovers attacking player took possession, two or three Hartlepool players would always converge to press him.

This high-intensity defense made the home team’s offense appear disjointed.

In the 38th minute, Hartlepool United got an excellent counter-attacking opportunity.

Oliver Baker successfully intercepted the ball in midfield and immediately passed it to the onrushing Liam Jones.

The 15-year-old displayed composure beyond his years upon receiving the ball.

Facing the charging goalkeeper, he opted for a clever chip shot.

The ball sailed over the goalkeeper’s head but went just over the crossbar.

This attack made the Doncaster Rovers fans gasp.

They hadn’t expected this striker, who still looked like a child, to possess such excellent technique and awareness.

In the final few minutes of the first half, neither side managed to score.

At halftime, the score remained 0-0.

Hartlepool United’s youngsters earned everyone’s respect with their tenacious defense.

In the locker room, the atmosphere was surprisingly relaxed.

There was no hint of tension on the children’s faces; instead, they were filled with excitement.

For them, being able to start in such an important match was an honor in itself.

”Well done, lads.”

Old John’s voice echoed in the locker room.

”You’ve proven your abilities.”

”Keep up this state in the second half, and opportunities will come.”

Lin Feng did not enter the locker room; he chose to ponder quietly on the sidelines.

The significance of this match went far beyond winning or losing.

The performance of these young players in a high-intensity match would determine their future development trajectory.

The Potential Dynamic Prediction function showed that the potential values of several core players were steadily increasing.

Especially Liam Jones and Oliver Baker; their data changes were the most obvious.

After the second half began, Doncaster Rovers clearly intensified their offense.

They knew they couldn’t drag this on any longer.

Failing to score against a group of kids would be a huge blow to their morale.

In the 55th minute, the home team finally got an excellent opportunity.

Heffernan received a pass from a teammate on the right side of the box; he didn’t choose to shoot directly but instead laid the ball off to a teammate in a better position.

But just then, the young center-back made a crucial interception.
