Reborn in Football to Build Top Clubs from English League Two

158: The battle for dignity and the cracks in the ”iron barrel”Victoria Park Stadium looked exceptionally sacred on this October afternoon.

Sunlight filtered through the clouds onto the turf, gilding every blade of grass with a golden glow. The stands were already bustling with fans, holding banners emblazoned with ”Eleven Consecutive Wins” and their songs echoing through the sky.

In the home team’s player tunnel, the Hartlepool United players were making their final warm-up preparations.

Vardy gently caressed his chest badge, his eyes focused and determined. Henderson jogged in place, adjusting his breathing rhythm. Sigurdsson stood quietly in the corner, his eyes slightly closed, seemingly rehearsing the tactical coordination in his mind.

Completely different sounds came from the other end of the away team’s tunnel.

”They look down on us!” The Luton team captain’s voice was heavy with suppressed anger. ”Go and let them know that dignity must be defended with blood!”

These words ignited a flame of defiance in the eyes of the Luton players, and they clenched their fists, ready to give their all in this uneven match.

As soon as the referee’s whistle blew, the field was clearly divided. Hartlepool United played football, while the Luton team, from the very first second, was ready to turn the match into a war.

The Hartlepool United players moved lightly, passed smoothly, and every action exuded confidence and composure. The Luton team, on the other hand, was like a group of fighters pushed to the brink, their eyes burning with a do-or-die determination.

Just three minutes into the game, the Luton team proved with their actions that their coach’s words were not mere pleasantries.

All players retreated to defend.

Ten players almost entirely retreated into their own penalty area, forming an extremely dense, almost shameless, iron barrel formation. Their formation was frighteningly compact, with no more than five meters between each player.

”Oh my goodness, is the Luton team trying to turn the penalty area into a parking lot?” The Sky Sports commentator couldn’t help but exclaim.

The Luton team’s tactics were simple and primitive – man-to-man marking.

Their center-backs stuck tightly to Vardy, two full-backs specifically marked Maloney and Snodgrass’s inside runs, and three midfielders roamed back and forth on the edge of the penalty area, ready to assist in defense at any time.

What was more deadly was that they unashamedly used the most primitive physical confrontations and constant fouls to disrupt Hartlepool United’s attacking rhythm.

In the 8th minute, as Vardy had just received the ball and turned, he was violently knocked down by the center-back behind him. The referee’s whistle blew, but such fouls were of no consequence to the Luton team.

In the 15th minute, as Sigurdsson prepared to take a long-range shot, three defenders simultaneously rushed towards him, the ball was cleared out of bounds, and Sigurdsson was knocked staggering a few steps.

”This is practically rugby!” The Hartlepool fans in the stands protested angrily.

But the Luton team remained unmoved; their strategy was to turn the game into a chaotic melee, preventing Hartlepool United’s technical advantages from being utilized.

Hartlepool United dominated possession in the first half, with statistics showing their possession rate as high as 78%.

However, facing the opponent’s dense defense, they found it difficult to create truly threatening scoring opportunities.

Vardy’s speed advantage was completely nullified by the opponent’s three-man marking tactic; every time he received the ball, he would face at least two defenders. Sigurdsson’s characteristic long-range shots were also neutralized by the opponent’s overwhelming numbers; whenever he prepared to shoot, there were always players willing to foul to disrupt him.

What was worse, this impenetrable defense began to affect the Hartlepool United players’ mentality.

In the 25th minute, Henderson’s pass went directly to an opposing player, a basic error that would normally be impossible.

In the 32nd minute, Walker’s breakthrough seemed impatient; he forced a shot, and the ball flew high over the crossbar.

Old John’s brows furrowed. ”The passes are too rushed.” He saw Walker’s wild cross and knew the players’ mentality was off.

Several passes seemed casual and lacked patience, which was precisely the effect the dense defensive tactic aimed to achieve—to make the opponent lose composure when unable to score for a long time.

In the 40th minute of the first half, Hartlepool United finally created their best chance of the half.

Tinkler, after intercepting the ball in midfield, quickly launched a counterattack. He passed the ball to Walker on the right wing, who sprinted down the flank and delivered a cross. In the penalty area, Vardy shook off a defender and leaped high to head the ball towards the goal.

The ball flew straight towards the bottom left corner of the goal, and the fans in the stands were already preparing to celebrate.

But the Luton goalkeeper showed extraordinary reaction speed, making a diving save to tip the ball just over the crossbar.

”Oh no! Such a good chance!” The commentator’s voice was full of regret.

The whistle blew for the end of the first half, with the score still 0-0.

The Luton players excitedly high-fived and embraced each other; they had successfully withstood the league leaders’ first-half onslaught. For them, drawing with Hartlepool United in the first half was already an unexpected achievement.

The Hartlepool fans in the stands began to feel a bit anxious.

”This won’t do, their defense is too tight!”

”We need more patience!”

”Believe in the team, we’ll definitely score in the second half!”

In the executive box, Lin Feng watched the field calmly, his teacup held steadily in his hand.

[Player Emotion Monitoring System shows: Vardy Anxiety Value 72%, Sigurdsson Frustration Value 65%, Henderson Impatience Value 58%]

He put down his teacup and pulled out his phone to send a message to Old John.

”Instruction G: Spatial Rotation. Have Maloney and Snodgrass frequently switch sides, and simultaneously have Henderson and Sigurdsson make alternating forward runs, using constantly changing attacking points to tear apart their defense.”

The time to test the team’s patience had arrived.

Lin Feng knew the weakness of a dense defense – it couldn’t be sustained for ninety minutes, especially when the defending team’s stamina began to drop, the formation would inevitably loosen. What he had to do was accelerate this process through tactical changes.

The atmosphere in the changing room at halftime was a bit subdued.

The players sat in their respective spots, sweat still trickling down their faces. The first-half stalemate had put pressure on everyone, especially the younger players.

Vardy wiped sweat from his forehead with a towel, a hint of unwillingness in his eyes. He had barely gotten any opportunities in the first half; every time he received the ball, he would be surrounded by three opposing players.

”Damn turtle shell!” Snodgrass couldn’t help but complain.

Old John opened the door and entered, holding the message Lin Feng had sent. His face showed no anxiety, but rather a peculiar calmness.

”Listen to me, lads.”

Old John walked to the tactics board and began to set up the adjustments for the second half.

”The boss has new instructions. Maloney, you and Robert need to switch positions frequently, don’t stay fixed on one side. Jordan, you and Gylfi will make alternating forward runs, creating more variables for their defense.”

He drew new running routes on the tactics board, arrows crisscrossing, looking full of variations.

”Patience! Lads.” Old John’s voice became firm. ”Remember what the boss said, we are playing against ourselves, not against them. As long as we don’t make mistakes, they will be the first to break down.”

”Playing against ourselves...” Henderson muttered to himself, taking a deep breath, as if expelling all the frustration from the first half. In the changing room, the anxious tension faded.

The players’ eyes became focused again, and the earlier impatience was dissipating. They remembered Lin Feng’s repeated emphasis in training – football is a psychological battle, and whoever loses patience first, loses.

”The captain is right.” Nelson stood up. ”They look excited now, but this high-intensity defense is extremely draining. In the second half, we’re going to show them what despair is.”

The whistle for the second half blew, and the two teams returned to the field.

Hartlepool United’s attack indeed became more flexible and varied.

Maloney and Snodgrass began to frequently switch positions, which made it difficult for Luton’s full-backs to defend. A player who was just marking the left winger would suddenly find the opponent on the right flank.

In the 52nd minute, Maloney switched from the left to the right, received a pass from Walker, cut inside, and shot, the ball narrowly missing the post.

In the 58th minute, Snodgrass, who had switched to the left wing, suddenly crossed the ball, and Vardy’s header in the penalty area was again saved by the goalkeeper.

Luton’s defense began to show disarray.

Their original man-to-man marking tactic was completely disrupted by these frequent position switches; players didn’t know whether to mark a man or defend an area.

What was more critical was that Henderson and Sigurdsson’s alternating forward runs put immense pressure on their midfield defense.

In the 65th minute, Snodgrass, who had switched to the left wing, received a pass from Robson, and facing an already tired right-back, he easily completed a breakthrough.

His cross accurately found Vardy in the penalty area.

Vardy leaped high, heading the ball forcefully amidst the challenge of two center-backs. The ball flew straight towards the bottom right corner of the goal, but the Luton goalkeeper once again displayed extraordinary performance, making a diving save to tip the ball out.

”It’s the goalkeeper again! This is his fifth brilliant save today!” The commentator’s voice was full of admiration.

The stalemate of the match seemed to continue, but a careful observer would notice that the situation on the field was subtly changing.

The Luton players’ movements began to feel heavy, and their defensive actions were not as quick as in the first half. The high-intensity defense was draining their stamina, and Lin Feng’s tactical adjustments were quietly eroding their will.

In the 68th minute, a Luton midfielder was clearly struggling in a challenge with Henderson, his tackle a half-second too slow.

In the 70th minute, their right-back made a positional error when facing Maloney’s breakthrough, almost causing a dangerous situation.

Lin Feng quietly observed all these changes from the executive box.

[System notification: Opponent’s average stamina has dropped to 67%, defensive success rate has decreased by 23% compared to the first half]

He knew the opportunity was coming.

A dense defense is like a tightly stretched net; when one part begins to loosen, the entire net will quickly collapse. And now, Luton’s defense was undergoing this process.

In the 71st minute, the opportunity finally arrived.

Henderson received a pass from Tinkler in midfield; the defending player in front of him was clearly exhausted, his movement speed greatly diminished. He easily shook off the opponent’s entanglement and advanced towards the attacking third.

Luton’s defense was forced to retreat as a whole, attempting to reorganize their defense.

But at that moment, Sigurdsson suddenly made a quick inside run from the right, attracting the attention of two defenders. A relatively open area appeared at the edge of the penalty box.

Henderson keenly seized this opportunity, accelerating his pace forward.

Just then, Sigurdsson received the ball at the edge of the penalty area. Three Luton defenders immediately surrounded him, trying to block his shot.

Everyone thought the Icelander would force a shot, and even the fans in the stands were ready to cheer for a long-range effort.

But Sigurdsson did not shoot.

At the moment he was surrounded by three players, he suddenly backheeled the ball to Jordan Henderson, who was making a high-speed run from behind him!

This pass completely caught everyone by surprise, including the Luton defenders. Their attention was entirely focused on Sigurdsson, and they hadn’t noticed Henderson quietly making a run from behind.
