Ashes of the Ninth Heaven

”You want to finish it.”

Old Man Ku stopped sweeping. In the three days since Fang Che’s descent party had mapped the upper galleries and withdrawn, promising, in Fang Che’s pleasant voice, to return with ”better tools”, Ku had resumed his eternal sweeping, and Lin Xiao had spent every waking hour with his palm pressed to black stone, turning the grey splinter in his dantian over and over in his mind.

The binding-fragment the seed had drunk from the qilin’s cracked collar. This is how you hold a thing still.

”I need to hide,” Lin Xiao said. ”Fang Che has tracking talismans. The next party will carry them. If I can’t hide from arrays, I’m a rat in a jar.”

”And you think you can just... complete it.” Ku’s voice was flat. ”Boy. Do you know what the Heaven Work demands?”

”The seed only keeps the sprout,” Lin Xiao said, repeating Ku’s own lesson. ”To finish it I need understanding, materials, and -” he hesitated, ”- and to bleed for it.”

”To die for it, some days.” Ku leaned on his broom. ”The Heaven Work doesn’t accept theory. You have to live the principle. For a warding seal, that means letting a ward do to you what it’s meant to do to others, and surviving it.”

Lin Xiao looked at his hands. Burn scars from the furnace still mapped his palms. ”I’ve survived worse.”

”No,” said Ku quietly. ”You really haven’t.”

He started with understanding.

For two days he traced the broken warding veins with charcoal on scraps of cloth, copying the silver script until his fingers cramped. Ku corrected him without teaching, a grunt when a stroke was wrong, silence when it was right. Lin Xiao learned the way he’d learned sword forms from Old Master Chen: by repetition, by failure, by the slow accretion of rightness.

A ward, he came to understand, was a promise written in silver. You shall not pass. You shall not be seen. You shall not be heard. The ancient keepers had written promises so absolute the stone still remembered them nine centuries later.

The fragment in his dantian was a promise with a hole in it: you shall not be -. The missing word was his to find.

His first attempt at the circle nearly cost him two fingers.

He’d drawn the ward too eagerly, the charcoal lines thick with impatience, and when he fed it a drop of blood the silver in the ward-stone surged — a white-hot thread that leapt up his arm and bit deep into the meat of his thumb. He’d jerked back with a bitten-off cry, and the smell of his own burnt flesh filled the alcove.

Ku, sweeping nearby, didn’t look up. ”The keepers had a saying,” the old man remarked to the floor. ”’Haste is a kind of lying. The stone knows.’”

Lin Xiao wrapped his thumb in cloth and started over. Slower this time. Each stroke deliberate, each curve meant. He thought about Old Master Chen teaching him the sword: the wrist turns here, like you’re pouring wine. Pour, don’t chop. Mean every movement.

On the second day, Ku told him a story — unprompted, which meant it was a warning.

”There was a keeper, seventh of her line, who got ambitious,” Ku said, not looking up from his sweeping. ”She fed the seed twelve sprouts in a year. Completed them all. Do you know what the thirteenth completion did to her?”

Lin Xiao shook his head.

”It finished her. The principle she was completing had a flaw she hadn’t seen — a miscopied stroke in the original, and the Heaven Work doesn’t forgive inattention. The completion went wrong. They called it a deviant change.” Ku’s broom stilled. ”Her left side forgot how to be human. Her shadow started moving before she did. She swept these corridors for forty years after that, and the dust was afraid of her.”

”The seed doesn’t protect you from your own mistakes,” Lin Xiao said quietly.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

”The seed,” said Ku, ”doesn’t protect you from anything. That’s the first thing you have to understand, and the last.”

Lin Xiao drew the circle a third time. His thumb throbbed under its cloth. He poured the lines like wine.

Materials: he pried a ward-stone — a fist-sized lump of black rock veined with silver — from a collapsed pillar base. It took him half a day with a shard of pillar for a chisel. His hands bled. The seed pulsed, interested.

Then the trial.

”The breath-hiding ward,” Ku said, when Lin Xiao showed him the design — a small circle, the promise you shall not be perceived, with the missing word filled in Lin Xiao’s own charcoal: by arrays. ”Modest. Sensible. It’ll hide you from talismans and tracking scripts for one incense-stick’s time.” A pause. ”If you live.”

Lin Xiao set the ward-stone in the center of his copied circle, pricked his thumb, and let three drops of blood fall on the silver vein.

The ward woke up wrong.

It was supposed to wrap him in stillness. Instead the broken promise inverted — the stone remembered nine hundred years of killing intruders better than it remembered hiding them, and the silver light rose up like a striking snake and bit.

Pain like a white-hot wire through the dantian. Lin Xiao’s back arched — and then Ku was there, the old man’s broom handle coming down on the ward-stone with a crack like a breaking spine. The silver light shattered, the feedback snapped, and Lin Xiao collapsed gasping, half-conscious, the ward’s broken structure still burning behind his eyes.

Through the haze of pain, something crystallized. The stone had remembered killing better than hiding, nine hundred years of killing intruders. The promise wasn’t wrong. It was inverted. And Lin Xiao, with blood on his lips and Ku’s hands holding him upright, understood.

”No,” he whispered, and pressed his bleeding thumb to the largest shard. ”Not you shall not be perceived. You shall not be perceived, by arrays, because there is nothing here worth killing.”

He fed it the correction the way he’d fed it charcoal and two days of cramped fingers: with understanding, not power. The seed in his dantian did not act. It only held, held the broken structure steady the way a clamp holds wood for the carver, while Lin Xiao’s own mind did the carving.

The promise sealed. You shall not be perceived by arrays. Complete. Whole. His.

And the seed took its price.

It did not ask. It simply reached into him the way it had reached into the falling stone in Chapter 1, no, the way it had reached for the crack, and drew out a single bright thread: Old Master Chen’s voice, patient and amused, saying ”No, boy, the wrist turns here, like you’re pouring wine, not chopping wood.” The first sword lesson. Seven years old, winter morning, the training yard smelling of pine.

Lin Xiao tried to hold onto it. He tried.

Then the pain released him, all at once, and darkness folded over like a lid.

He woke vomiting grey ash, Ku’s hand hard between his shoulder blades. For a long time he just lay there, cheek against cold stone, breathing in great ragged pulls.

It was Ku who noticed it first — or rather, Ku who didn’t comment on it, which was how Lin Xiao knew it mattered. On the back of Lin Xiao’s right hand: a streak of grey ash, thin as a brushstroke, running from knuckle to wrist, exactly where the seed had drawn its price through his skin.

Lin Xiao scrubbed at it with his sleeve. With water. With ash-mud. It didn’t fade. It sat under his skin like a vein of another color, not dirt, not a scar. Something the seed had kept, and marked.

He stared at it for a long time. Then he pulled his sleeve down over it and said nothing.

But he didn’t stop seeing it. In the corner of his vision, for days afterward: that thin grey line, where his hand had been clean before.

”Idiot,” Ku said hoarsely. ”You were gone so long I started digging.”

Lin Xiao reached for the memory — Chen’s voice, the wine-pouring wrist — and found a warm hollow where it had been. He knew the lesson had happened. He knew it the way you know a room you’ve never entered. The sound of it was gone.

Tears cut clean lines through the dust on his face. He didn’t wipe them.

”What did it take?” Ku asked, gentler.

”His voice.” Lin Xiao’s own voice was a ruin. ”The first lesson.”

Ku was quiet for a long time. Then: ”The seed eats what you were, boy. Every completion costs a piece of the original you. Remember that before you get ambitious.”

Lin Xiao nodded. He pressed his palm to the ward-stone — and felt it: the completed principle, sitting in the seed like a coin in a purse. His. No one had given it to him. He had made it, out of brokenness and blood and his own understanding.

And something else — so faint he almost missed it. The seed’s grey had paled. A shade lighter than yesterday, like ash after wind has passed over it.

He stared. Had it been darker before? He tried to remember the exact grey of it, the cold weight in his dantian, and couldn’t be sure. But the unease stayed with him, cold as the seed itself.

Every completion costs a part of its original essence, the bible of his memory whispered — Ku’s voice: each time it completes a dao, it loses a part of what it was.

He pushed the thought down. He had a ward to test.

He whispered the trigger phrase he’d written into the circle, and the ward folded around him like still water.

Ku’s sweeping stopped. The old man stared at the empty air where Lin Xiao stood, then slowly smiled.

”Well,” he said to no one. ”That’s one way to disappear.”

Lin Xiao walked — invisible to every array in the ruins — straight through the upper gallery, past a fresh chalk mark, past a discarded lamp-pole. The ward’s stillness had a texture he hadn’t expected: the world went slightly muffled, as if he were hearing it through a wall of water. His own footsteps reached him a half-beat late. He kept one hand trailing along the wall to stay oriented, and the stone was cold and honest under his fingers.

He was halfway back to his alcove when he heard boots.

Fang Che’s voice, close enough to touch: ”Hold the talisman still.”

Lin Xiao froze. Pressed himself into a wall seam. The tracker talisman in the captain’s hand spun — and stopped, pointing at empty air three paces from Lin Xiao’s chest.

Fang Che looked at the empty air for a long moment. His head tilted, the way it did when he was turning a problem over in his mind. Then he did something Lin Xiao didn’t expect: he dismissed the captain with a flick of two fingers, and stood alone in the corridor, facing the nothing where Lin Xiao hid.

”I know you’re there,” Fang Che said conversationally. ”Or rather — I know where you aren’t. The talisman sees everything except one Lin-Xiao-shaped hole in the world.” A pause. ”That’s a keeper’s trick. Did the old sweeper teach you, or did you teach yourself?”

Lin Xiao didn’t breathe. Didn’t blink. The ward held.

Fang Che smiled slowly. ”Oh,” he said softly. ”You’re learning.”

He turned and walked away, robe whispering on swept stone. But at the corridor’s mouth he stopped, without turning around.

”Whoever you are,” he said, ”the furnace made you. Remember that, when you decide what to do with what it gave you.”

Then he was gone, and Lin Xiao stood shaking in his water-walled silence until the ward guttered out on its own, one incense-stick later.

That night, Lin Xiao dreamed of a training yard smelling of pine — and woke with his cheeks wet, unable to remember why.
