Ashes of the Ninth Heaven

The boots came down the shaft in good order, six pairs, and the spirit lamps came with them, white fire in glass cages, swinging on poles, painting the black stone gold.

Lin Xiao counted the steps between each footfall without thinking about it. Old habit. In the sect, you learned the gait of everyone who might want you dead.

”Down,” breathed Old Man Ku, and a broom-handle cracked across Lin Xiao’s shoulder, not hard, but urgent. ”Side passage. Now. And whatever you do, don’t look at the silver lines too long. They remember being looked at.”

Lin Xiao moved. His ribs were still splinted with torn cloth, his left eye still crusted half-shut, and every step sent a dull bell-note of pain through his bones. But he moved quietly. Three years as the sect’s favorite target had taught him how to be quiet.

Ku swept him, literally swept him, into a crack in the wall no wider than a coffin, and then the old man did something Lin Xiao would remember for the rest of his life: he stood in the open corridor, leaned on his broom, and waited, the picture of a harmless old sweeper who had never been anything else.

The lamps rounded the corner.

Fang Che came third in the line, which told Lin Xiao everything about how the young sect master thought. Not first, never first into danger. Not last, never where he couldn’t see. Third: close enough to command, far enough to survive.

He was still in white and gold. There was not a speck of dust on him. Lin Xiao, wedged in his crack in the wall with ruin-dust in his mouth, hated him with a clarity that felt like cold water.

”Spread the lamps,” Fang Che said. ”Wen says the warding veins are dead. I want them proven dead before anyone touches stone.”

A disciple with a torch-pole, young, nervous, the lamp shaking in his grip, edged toward one of the silver veins glowing faintly in the floor. The vein pulsed, slow as a sleeping heartbeat.

”Don’t-” began another disciple, but the young one had already knelt, fascinated, and pressed his palm flat to the silver line.

The ward did not flare. It did not roar. It simply remembered, all at once, that it was supposed to kill intruders, and it did so with nine hundred years of pent-up diligence.

There was no scream. There was a sound like a wet cloth slapped against stone, and then the disciple was gone, and his shadow was burned into the black floor in white ash, one arm still raised.

Silence. The lamps swung. Nobody breathed.

”Proven dead,” said Fang Che mildly. ”Thank you, Disciple Hong, for your contribution.” He stepped over the ash-shadow without looking down. ”Nobody touches the silver. Mark the veins with chalk. We map first, touch never.”

Lin Xiao’s hands were shaking. Not from fear, from the thing in his dantian.

The seed had pulsed when the ward discharged. Not with hunger. With recognition. Like a dog hearing its master’s whistle from very far away.

Broken things, Ku had said. Those it drinks.

And the ward that had killed Disciple Hong was broken, Lin Xiao could see it now, the way you see a crack in ice: the silver line stuttered where it should have flowed. Nine hundred years had worn a gap in its killing verse. The seed wanted that gap.

”Young master,” said the guard captain, a thick man with a scarred jaw. ”The floor.”

”What about it?”

”It’s swept.”

Fang Che stopped walking.

Lin Xiao stopped breathing.

The captain knelt and ran a gauntleted finger across the black stone. It came away clean. Around them, the ruin stretched in every direction, collapsed pillars, shattered friezes, dust nine centuries deep, and here, in this corridor, the floor was swept clean as a temple courtyard.

”Interesting,” said Fang Che softly.

Ku, leaning on his broom twenty paces away in plain lamplight, smiled his sad smile and said nothing at all.

”You,” Fang Che said, pointing at Ku with two fingers. ”Old man. You sweep here.”

”I sweep where I stand, young master,” said Ku. ”It passes the time.”

”How long have you stood here?”

”Oh.” Ku scratched his beard. ”Nine hundred years, give or take. I lose count.”

One of the disciples laughed, a short, nervous bark. Nobody else did. Fang Che studied Ku the way Lin Xiao had once seen him study a poisoned wine cup: with polite, total attention.

”Then perhaps you can answer a question, old man.” Fang Che took two slow steps closer. The lamplight caught the gold thread in his robe. ”My sect’s records say the Ninth Heaven Ruins were sealed after the last keeper died. Sealed completely. No entrances, no survivors.”

”Mm,” said Ku.

”So.” Fang Che’s voice stayed pleasant. ”Who taught you to sweep?”

The corridor went very quiet. Even the lamps seemed to swing more carefully.

Ku looked at Fang Che for a long moment. Then he smiled, and for an instant, Lin Xiao, watching from his crack, saw what he had seen once before: the grey falling away, the figure in black jade armor underneath, patient as a mountain.

”The last keeper,” Ku said simply. ”She taught me everything. Including this.” He lifted his broom. ”Sweep the floor, boy. The dust remembers feet, and feet tell stories.”

Fang Che held his gaze. Then he inclined his head, a fraction, a courtesy between equals that made the captain’s jaw tighten.

”Search the corridors,” Fang Che said at last. ”Every crack, every side passage. Something down here is awake, and I want to know what it eats.” He turned back to Ku. ”And you, old man, you’ll walk with me.”

They moved off, lamps swaying, chalk squeaking on stone as the disciples marked the killing veins. Lin Xiao waited until the light had thinned, then eased out of his crack -

- and froze.

The dark behind Ku’s sweeping spot was not empty.

An eye was open in it. An eye the size of a cart wheel, amber and slit-pupiled, set in a vast scaled head that rested on a broken pillar. A dragon, no. A qilin, carved from living stone, or grown into it; Lin Xiao couldn’t tell where sculpture ended and flesh began. Its body coiled away into the dark, and around its neck ran a collar of silver ward-script, cracked clean through in three places.

It was dying. It had been dying for nine hundred years. The open eye watched Lin Xiao with a patience so deep it had worn through into something else, amusement, maybe. Or grief.

Don’t look at it too long, Ku had said.

Lin Xiao looked at the cracked collar instead. And the seed in his dantian pulled, a cold tide, unmistakable.

Before he could think better of it, he stepped forward and laid his palm against the cracked silver of the binding.

The taking was gentle this time. A splinter working its way out. The seed drank the crack, drank the brokenness of the binding, and kept, deep in its grey cold, a single perfect splinter of understanding: this is how you hold a thing still. This is how a seal promises.

Lin Xiao gasped and staggered back. In his mind, without words, without teaching, sat a small grey certainty: the shape of a binding, incomplete, waiting.

The qilin’s great eye blinked, once, slow as a sunset, and closed again. For an instant, Lin Xiao felt seen: weighed, measured, and, impossibly, recognized.

Lin Xiao’s blood went cold. He stumbled back into his crack in the wall as the lamps began to swing back toward him, as Fang Che’s voice echoed down the corridor, closer now:

”Spread out! And mark my words, whatever you do, don’t touch the silver lines.”

The eye closed. In the dark, Lin Xiao pressed his hand to his dantian and felt the seed pulse, slow, patient, hungry.

It wanted more.

He found Ku waiting in the alcove, broom across his knees, though the lamps had taken the old man with them an hour ago. Or an echo of him. Lin Xiao had stopped being sure which Ku was which.

Later, thinking about it, Lin Xiao realized something odd: in all his days in the ruins, Ku had only ever swept one patch of floor, a single slab of black stone before the qilin corridor, swept to a polish while the rest of the ruins drowned in nine centuries of dust. Never anywhere else. Just that one slab, over and over, as if the ash there were different from all other ash.

He didn’t ask. He was learning that some questions were doors.

”It let you touch it,” Ku said. Not a question.

”The qilin. Its binding.” Lin Xiao sat down hard. His palm still tingled where it had met the cracked silver. ”The seed drank the crack. I, I understand something now. About seals. About holding things still.”

”Show me your hand.”

Lin Xiao held it out. In the center of his palm, faint as a watermark, a grey sigil turned slowly, a circle with a gap in it.

Ku stared at it for a long time. ”One,” he said.

”One what?”

”One sprout kept. The seed has room for only so many, boy. Every principle you complete takes a seat inside it, and the seats are few.” Ku’s voice dropped. ”The last keeper used to say: keep ten small truths, or forge them into one great truth, but once forged, you can never spend them separately again. Choose what you keep. Choose carefully. Because the seed will keep drinking whether you choose or not, and a drunkard’s collection is worth less than a master’s one.”

Lin Xiao looked at the sigil turning in his palm. ”How many seats?”

”If I knew that,” Ku said, ”I’d be the keeper, not the sweeper.” He stood, joints creaking. ”Sleep, boy. Tomorrow you learn what your first sprout costs.”

Far above, the furnace chamber stood empty and cold. But in the dark behind the altar, the crack in the foundation stone was widening, one hair’s breadth at a time, and something below was breathing through it.
