The Hockey Playing Alpha and His Human Ice Princess

Georgia

Darcy Valentine walked into the dining hall on a Tuesday afternoon, and everything I’d been turning over in my mind got shoved to the back entirely.

He arrived mid-lunch, flanked by an administrator giving him a brief, obviously rehearsed tour of the room. Something about the way he moved through the space caught my attention before I’d even registered why. Tall, dark haired, dressed with a kind of effortless polish that made everyone else’s uniform look slightly rumpled by comparison, he walked like the room already belonged to him, like he was simply choosing, generously, to let the rest of us occupy it alongside him. A stillness clung to his confidence, as though he’d spent years perfecting the exact angle of his chin, the exact unhurried pace of his stride.

Conversations paused as he passed. Nothing dramatic, nothing anyone would openly comment on, but I’d learned to read this campus’s subtler currents by now, and the air shifted the second he crossed the threshold. Attention rearranged itself around him the same unspoken way it had around Puck that first day in the dining hall. A prickle crawled up the back of my neck, some instinct telling me to pay closer attention than I normally would.

I glanced toward Puck’s usual table and went still myself.

He stared at Darcy with an intensity that held nothing friendly in it, his whole body locked rigid, every muscle drawn tight like a wire pulled to its absolute limit. Not jealousy, or not only jealousy. Something deeper and older sharpened the way he watched Darcy cross the room, territorial and coiled, the same predatory stillness I remembered from that first day on the cobblestones, except aimed now at another person instead of at me. My stomach tightened just watching him, an echo of that first encounter rising up uninvited, and my fingers found the edge of the table and gripped it without my permission. That stillness meant something, I realized. It wasn’t posturing. Whatever instinct had locked onto me that first day had just locked onto Darcy instead, which meant Darcy mattered in the same dangerous way I apparently did, another variable in whatever equation Puck was constantly, silently solving.

Liam leaned in and murmured something to him, urgent, his brow furrowed with what looked like genuine concern. Puck didn’t respond at all, didn’t even glance away from Darcy’s path across the room. Whatever Liam said didn’t so much as ripple the surface of Puck’s focus.

Darcy, for his part, seemed entirely unbothered by the attention, or more likely, entirely aware of it and choosing to enjoy it. He finished his brief tour of the room and, instead of settling at any of the obvious open tables, made a direct line toward mine. My pulse ticked up without my permission, some instinct warning me this wasn’t a coincidence.

”You must be Georgia,” he said, voice smooth as poured silk, sliding into the seat across from me without waiting for an invitation.

”How do you know my name?” I asked, wary.

”Small circuit. You’d be surprised how far a good reputation travels,” he said, tone light and teasing. He leaned back, studying me with an assessing kind of interest that reminded me uncomfortably of Bianca at registration, except warmer, more deliberately charming. ”Sectional silver last season. Regional bronze the year before that. Your triple lutz combination scored well above technical merit at your last competition, though your program component scores suggest your choreography’s been holding you back more than your jumps ever have.”

”That’s oddly specific,” I said, genuinely startled. ”How would you even know that?”

”I pay attention to things that matter,” he said, breezy, like it was an obvious explanation rather than the strange, precise recitation it actually was.

”That’s not an answer.”

”Isn’t it?” His smile didn’t waver, but something shifted behind his eyes, a door closing somewhere I couldn’t see. ”Let’s just say information travels faster than people expect, especially about skaters worth watching.”

It didn’t feel like flattery, not really, despite the compliment buried somewhere inside it. It felt colder than that, like listening to a file read aloud, exact and thorough and just slightly too detailed for an ordinary conversation between strangers. A chill ran through me, and I resisted the urge to lean back, to put a little more distance between us.

”Have we met before?” I asked, unable to shake the feeling that something was off about how much he already seemed to know.

”Not yet,” he said, smiling again, something calculating running underneath the charm, not quite reaching his eyes. ”But I imagine we’ll be spending plenty of time getting to know each other now that I’m here.”

He asked a few more questions, easy and conversational on the surface, about my training, about my adjustment to Rosethorne, about whether I enjoyed the ice here compared to what I’d trained on before. He stayed charming the entire time, quick and funny in a way not entirely unlike Liam, though something underneath Darcy’s charm felt sharper, more deliberate, less like genuine warmth and more like a tool he’d decided to use. I found myself answering carefully, choosing my words the way I might test thin ice, aware that every response seemed to be filed away behind his easy smile.

Across the room, Puck still watched, his expression carved from stone. Liam had stopped talking entirely, his own attention fixed on the same scene with visible unease. The two of them together, silent and watchful, made the back of my neck prickle all over again.

Eventually Darcy stood, smooth and unhurried, gathering himself to leave with the same easy confidence he’d arrived with.

”It was nice meeting you, Georgia,” he said, and then, almost as an afterthought, casual as commenting on the weather, he leaned down slightly and added, voice dropping low, ”You smell like him already.”

”What?” I blinked, caught off guard.

He didn’t clarify. He straightened, offered one more easy smile, and walked away, weaving through the dining hall with that same unbothered, room-owning confidence he’d arrived with.

My heartbeat didn’t settle. The words lingered long after he’d gone, refusing to be shrugged away.

He didn’t laugh at all.
