The Hockey Playing Alpha and His Human Ice Princess

Georgia

The administrative summons still hangs over me, a date circled in red I can’t stop glancing toward, and after last night’s revelations about Mandi and Puck, I’m no longer sure anyone at this school is who I thought they were. So when I feel him before I see him, I brace myself before I’ve even confirmed what I’m bracing for.

The dining hall at Rosethorne roars in the specific way any school cafeteria roars: trays clattering, dozens of overlapping conversations blending into one continuous hum, chairs scraping against stone floors that have clearly hosted this exact chaos longer than any of us have been alive. Sunlight cuts through the tall windows in pale, dusty shafts, catching motes of flour or steam or something else entirely, something I’ve learned not to question too closely at this school. I sit with Mandi and Alexa near the far wall, half listening to a debate about whether the dining hall’s soup rotation secretly cycles the same three soups on a loop, my spoon moving through broth I’ve mostly stopped tasting, when something shifts.

It isn’t a sound. It isn’t anything I could point to and explain if someone asked me to. It’s more like a change in air pressure, some low hum under my skin that has nothing to do with the actual noise around me, a sensation that starts somewhere behind my sternum and spreads outward before I can name it. And before I’ve consciously decided to look anywhere, my eyes are already moving across the room, already finding him, already certain of where he’ll be before I confirm it.

Puck sits at a table near the windows with a handful of other students I recognize vaguely from the halls, and he isn’t looking at me. Or he wasn’t, half a second ago. By the time my eyes land on him, his are already lifting to meet mine, like he felt the same pull from across the room at the exact same moment I did, some current running between us without either of us reaching for it on purpose. My stomach does something complicated, some knot of dread and want tangled together so tightly I can’t separate them.

Neither of us looks away right away.

It’s not a long moment, probably only a second or two in actual time, but it stretches out strangely, the way certain seconds do when something in your body decides they matter more than the clock says they should. The noise of the dining hall continues around us, distant, muffled, like I’m hearing it through water while the space between us stays sharp and clear, almost painfully so, like the rest of the room has gone soft-focus just so this one thing can stay in view.

Then I notice something else. Something happening at the edges of my vision that has nothing to do with either of us directly.

Conversations near us shift, not stopping exactly, but reorganizing, like a current moving through water. A group of students two tables over exchange a quick glance with each other, nothing dramatic, just a flicker of attention that passes between three or four people in the space of a breath. Someone near the drink station pauses mid pour for a fraction of a second too long, liquid nearly overflowing before they catch themselves.

Nobody says a word about it. Nobody points, nobody whispers loud enough for me to catch anything specific. But something in the room has changed, some invisible temperature shift moving through the crowd of students like they’re all quietly aware of something I’m not, all recalibrating around a moment that, as far as I can tell, is just two people looking at each other across a cafeteria. My skin prickles with the sense of being catalogued, filed away, though by whom or for what purpose I couldn’t begin to guess.

”You okay?” Alexa asks, her voice edged with mild concern, and I realize I’ve gone quiet mid conversation, my soup rotation opinions apparently forgotten, my spoon frozen halfway between bowl and mouth.

”Yeah. Sorry. Just zoned out,” I say, my tone flat, distracted, the words leaving my mouth before I’ve fully decided to speak them.

Saying it out loud feels strange in a way I don’t have time to examine, some small vertigo of recognition I push aside, because Puck is still looking at me, and I’m still looking back, and neither of us has managed to break it yet, and something about the stubbornness of that eye contact feels like it matters more than it should.

I don’t know, sitting there with my tray in front of me and my soup going cold, that an entire room that isn’t quite what it appears to be has just noticed me. I don’t know that every one of those flickering glances, every recalibrated conversation, every pause a half second too long, belongs to something bigger than teenage cafeteria gossip, some collective awareness moving through a pack that’s just watched its heir lock eyes across a crowded room with someone he was never supposed to notice at all.

I just know it feels like something happened. I just don’t know what, and the not-knowing sits heavy in my chest, a stone I’ll carry through the rest of the meal without managing to name it.

The boy beside Puck, the one whose name I still don’t know despite recognizing his face from the halls a dozen times over, leans in close, his hand landing briefly, firmly on Puck’s shoulder like he has every right to command his attention, his voice low, close to Puck’s ear, the words lost beneath the general noise of the room even as I strain to catch them, my whole body angling infinitesimally toward theirs without my permission. Whatever it is, it’s enough. Puck’s whole posture changes, shoulders drawing up tight, jaw setting hard, some visible current of tension running through him like a shock, and then he’s standing, chair scraping back sharp against the stone floor, tray still full in front of him, untouched.

He doesn’t look at me again.

He walks out fast, weaving between tables with that same fluid, controlled economy I noticed the very first day, the same unnatural grace I still don’t have a word for, though I’ve started to suspect the word exists and I simply haven’t been given it yet. The other boy trails after him, gesturing with one hand, his expression urgent, like he’s trying to slow Puck down or catch up. I can’t tell which, and something in the set of his shoulders makes me think even he isn’t entirely sure.

I watch him go, watch the dining hall doors swing shut behind him, and I notice, even from this distance, even with his back to me the whole way out, that his shoulders never once loosen. They stay locked, rigid, held like he’s containing something with his whole body, some pressure building underneath his skin that walking away isn’t quite enough to release. I sit with my cooling soup and my unanswered questions, and I wonder, not for the first time, what it would take to actually see this place clearly, or whether that kind of clarity is even something Rosethorne allows.
