Reborn Divine Doctor: The Abandoned Girl's Legend

Chapter 1317: Chapter 377: Seizing the Credit

Ye Lingyue and the others, along with the three children, arrived at the Mayor’s residence.

To their surprise, Luo Qianche and Jiang Ce were also there.

”Why are you here?”

Luo Qianche was pleased to see Di Shen, but his tone turned harsh upon seeing Ye Lingyue.

”We’re here because of the Water Ghost issue. The parents of these children encountered trouble, and the townsfolk are threatening to burn down houses and kill, claiming it’s a longstanding practice in town.”

Ye Lingyue recounted the events.

”Mayor, is this true?”

Luo Qianche glanced at the children, noting their small, dirty appearance, and she disliked dealing with such commoner children the most.

”Young City Lord, you don’t understand. We had no choice. The situation with the Water Ghosts has escalated. I had already issued orders forbidding fishing, but the father of these children defied it and went fishing. Trouble came upon his return, resulting in unexplained deaths among those he contacted. His wife died a few days ago as well; their entire family is possessed by Water Ghosts. If we don’t burn them, the whole town will suffer.”

The Mayor looked at the children with a face full of fear.

”We’re not Ghost Children. Our father and mother weren’t possessed by ghosts. We had no food at home, and without fishing, my siblings and I wouldn’t have anything to eat. Father only went fishing for us.”

The oldest child wiped his nose, protesting in frustration.

He seemed about six or seven years old, the oldest among the three children.

He might not understand the concept of death, but he knew about Water Ghosts.

Ever since his father returned from fishing, the townspeople had been labeling them as Ghost Children, and other kids refused to play with them.

”Nonsense! Didn’t the town provide grain to each household? How could you be out of food?”

The Mayor’s face turned crimson as he reprimanded the child.

”You should ask your dear nephew about that. We’ve already asked the neighboring villagers. He took advantage of being the Mayor’s nephew to hoard grain and sell it at high prices, getting rich off the Water Ghost panic. Many households have no food, no money, and are forced to fish.”

Ye Lingyue grabbed a Civilian Soldier Captain and slammed him to the ground.

The captain paled and kowtowed, begging for mercy.

”Unbelievable, truly a scoundrel.”

Luo Qianche felt displeasure upon hearing this.

She and Ye Lingyue arrived at Yuliao Town around the same time, but within a single night, Ye Lingyue uncovered so much, overshadowing her as the Young City Lord.

Luo Qianche gathered the Power of Reincarnation in her hand, transforming it into a Spiritual Dagger, ready to slash the Civilian Soldier Captain’s throat.

”Hold on.”

Ye Lingyue stepped in to stop Luo Qianche.

”What are you doing? When has it been your turn to manage my subordinates?”

Luo Qianche glared angrily.

”Killing him won’t solve anything. The root cause is the Water Ghosts. Eliminating one corrupt official doesn’t resolve Yuliao Town’s problem.”

Ye Lingyue had already learned that incidents involving Water Ghosts were ancient along the Han River Basin.

But for some reason, it had been especially rampant this past month. Previously, disturbances were only a few times a year, but recently, almost every fishing expedition ended in disaster.

Many people in town had died due to Water Ghosts.

Some households, once believed possessed by Water Ghosts, were condemned as Ghost Children, either burned or imprisoned. Without intervention, these children might have become vengeful spirits too.

”So what do you suggest we do?”

Luo Qianche was skeptical about the Water Ghost issue.

”It’s simple, the one who ties the knot must untie it. We need to identify the Water Ghost to truly resolve Yuliao Town’s crisis.”

Upon hearing Ye Lingyue’s intention to capture the Water Ghost herself, the Mayor was horrified.

”Please, you mustn’t. The Water Ghost is fierce and elusive. We already organized a civilian guard and even hired Demon Hunters at high costs, but it was all in vain. Offending the Water Ghost increased the casualties in the town.”

The Mayor broke into a cold sweat at the mention of the incident.

Initially, he tried capturing the Water Ghost, but when the civilian guard reached the haunted part of Han River, the seemingly calm weather suddenly capsized their boats.

Those Demon Hunters even attempted to fly into that watery area for investigation.

But once there, the Spiritual Artifacts malfunctioned inexplicably, causing hunters and artifacts to plunge into the Han River; their bodies were never retrieved.

Over time, the Water Ghost issue at Yuliao Town became widely known, and even the most seasoned Demon Hunters avoided mentioning capturing Water Ghosts.

Yuliao Town grew more desolate with each passing day.

”How ridiculous! Don’t lump us in with ordinary Demon Hunters. It’s just a Water Ghost. No big deal. Being of the Water God Bloodline and protected by the Divine Race, I’ll handle this easily.” Luo Qianche reprimanded the Mayor.

”Indeed, with the Young City Lord protected by a Divine Beast, there’s no need to fear any creature. I’ll accompany you to Han River Basin. We’re here to help Yuliao Town resolve its crisis, unlike some who only talk but are actually cowardly.” Jiang Ce supported Luo Qianche.

Luo Qianche and Jiang Ce’s confidence stemmed from the presence of the Merfolk King, whom they saw as the sovereign of the water domain. To them, the Water Ghost couldn’t hide from him.

Ye Lingyue and Di Shen could only sigh.

Ye Lingyue looked at the Merfolk King, whose water-blue eyes, already melancholy, appeared even deeper.

At noon, Luo Qianche and Jiang Ce forced the Mayor to dispatch boats to the Han River Basin.

Watching the boats depart, Huang Jun and others were discontented.

”Ling Yue, why didn’t you speak up? You were the one who suggested capturing the Water Ghost, and yet they took the lead. If they capture it, the townsfolk will support them.”

”I don’t think the Water Ghost is easily dealt with. Winning people’s hearts isn’t just about one method. Let’s investigate the deaths of townsfolk and others.”

Ye Lingyue gazed at the wide Han River, feeling an ominous premonition.

The flowing water, its destination unknown, seemed to conceal an icy, unclear Evil Qi spreading over the surface. It was as if something was about to emerge from the depths.
