Chapter 68: Chapter 66: Really Went to Jiangcheng, the Birthmark Is Gone

Su Miaoyi was exhausted. She was fighting to stay awake, planning to go home and collapse into bed.

But Jiang Junrui had startled her awake at her door.

When she got back to her place, she closed the door and sat down on the sofa.

She tried to remember what she had been doing in late June.

’Why can’t I remember anything?’

At first, she had been absolutely certain she had never been to Jiangcheng, but now, what Jiang Junrui said had left her feeling unsettled.

After sitting on the sofa for a while, she started searching through her phone.

First, she opened her ticket-booking app, but the order history only went back one month. She couldn’t check June. In any case, she found no record of a trip to Jiangcheng.

Nothing on the app. She started looking through her text messages next.

There should be confirmation messages for successful bookings, along with gate information.

She specifically scrolled back to June, but there was nothing.

She then checked her email and the service accounts on her WeChat, but there were no booking confirmations there either.

’Is Jiang Junrui lying to me? Or... did I take a taxi to Jiangcheng?’

Unable to find any information about a trip to Jiangcheng, Su Miaoyi leaned back on the sofa and stared up at the ceiling.

Suddenly, she thought of another place she could check for her location.

She opened the app she used for writing her novels.

She found her own comments.

Below every comment, her current city was displayed.

Right now, all her comments showed: Jinghai.

She scrolled back, reaching July, then scrolled back further.

The comment from June 29th showed: Jinghai.

The one from June 27th showed: Jiangcheng.

The 26th.

The 25th.

All of them said Jiangcheng.

The hairs on Su Miaoyi’s arms instantly stood on end.

Even after experiencing so many unbelievable things in recent months, she couldn’t accept, just for a moment, that she was missing a piece of her memory.

And from the looks of it, her experiences during that time had been deliberately erased.

’Why?’

’And what does it have to do with Jiang Junrui?’

’Why does he care so much?’

Su Miaoyi sat on the sofa for a long time.

When sleepiness washed over her again, she got up and went to the bathroom to shower.

After her shower, she came out in her pajamas and paused in front of the mirror.

She remembered what Jiang Junrui had said about the birthmark on her back.

So she lifted her pajama top and looked at her back in the mirror.

Su Miaoyi turned her head to look at the reflection and froze for a second. She lifted her top higher.

Finally, she just took her pajama top off completely.

She stared at her back in the mirror.

There was nothing there.

The spot where the birthmark should have been was now completely smooth, without a single trace.

She leaned closer to the mirror.

Still nothing.

She put her top back on, her sleepiness gone once again.

She picked up her phone and searched to see if red birthmarks could suddenly disappear.

She did a lot of searching, and all the answers said they don’t disappear.

She then tried to recall the last time she’d seen the birthmark, but she couldn’t. She had no memory of it at all.

She couldn’t remember looking at it at all this year, at the very least.

She wasn’t in the habit of looking at it.

Su Miaoyi felt that something was very wrong.

It seemed she was missing a very crucial memory.

After staring into space for a while, she checked her novel’s update calendar again.

June 28th, 29th, and 30th—there were no updates on any of those days.

Her comment reply on the 29th was an explanation for why she hadn’t updated.

But she only said she had some personal matters to attend to and would update that night.

But she never did.

She didn’t update on the 30th, either.

Then, on July 1st, the updates started again.

’I can’t remember. I can’t remember anything.’

Su Miaoyi gave up and went back to her bedroom, throwing herself onto the bed.

’Whatever, let it be.’

’I’ll just deal with things as they come.’

...

「One week later」

Su Miaoyi received a message from Shen Yanzhou.

He was asking if she was free and when she was going to treat him to a meal.

Su Miaoyi asked if he was free, adding that there was no time like the present—how about lunch today?

Shen Yanzhou chose the place, and Su Miaoyi went to treat him, bringing her ”entire fortune” with her.

Between her job and writing novels over the years, she had saved up a bit of money, even if her books hadn’t become bestsellers.

Plus, with the reward money she’d received for solving the case, treating Shen Yanzhou to a meal was well within her means.

When she arrived, Shen Yanzhou was already there.

”Sorry to keep you waiting,” Su Miaoyi said.

”I just got here,” Shen Yanzhou said, handing her a stack of photos.

Su Miaoyi took them and looked at the photos, pleasantly surprised.

It was the Devin Rex cat, An’an, and her four kittens.

Four kittens, four different coat colors.

They had already grown quite a bit.

They looked like four different breeds.

”They were all a bit ugly right after they were born, so I didn’t show you,” Shen Yanzhou said. ”They look pretty good now.”

Su Miaoyi flipped through the photos. ”They’re all very beautiful.”

”Do you want to adopt one?” Shen Yanzhou asked.

Su Miaoyi looked up at him. ”Are you willing to part with one?”

Shen Yanzhou nodded. ”If you want to, you can pick one.”

Su Miaoyi smiled. ”Never mind. I’m not always home, so I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to take good care of it.”

”Because you’re working on cases at the police station?” Shen Yanzhou asked.

Su Miaoyi nodded.

Shen Yanzhou glanced at her, then lowered his eyes. ”Why the sudden move to working on cases with the police?”

Su Miaoyi looked up at him.

Shen Yanzhou raised his eyes, and they met hers for a moment. ”Do you like working at the police station?”

Su Miaoyi’s eyelashes fluttered.

No one had ever asked her that question.

It seemed she had never really thought about it herself, either.

It all started because she could see visions of the crimes, which led to her being treated as a suspect, and from there she formed an inextricable bond with the police station.

After that, it felt like everything was just pushing her along.

But if she had to answer the question...

Her answer would be yes.

”I like it a lot,” Su Miaoyi said. ”It makes me happy to help them solve cases.”

Shen Yanzhou looked at her but didn’t say anything.

The two of them ordered their food.

Shen Yanzhou then asked, ”Has Jiang Junrui still been contacting you recently?”

”Did he go back to Jiangcheng?” Su Miaoyi asked.

”Yes.”

”He messages me occasionally, but not as often as when he was in Jinghai. It’s obvious he’s busy,” Su Miaoyi said.

Shen Yanzhou was silent for a moment before saying, ”You should contact him as little as possible. It would be best not to contact him at all.”

Su Miaoyi looked at him.

Shen Yanzhou said, ”The Jiang family’s business dealings aren’t exactly clean. They could get into trouble at any time, and I don’t want you to get dragged into it.”

Su Miaoyi thought for a moment, then nodded. ”I understand. Thank you.”

After the meal, the two of them walked out of the restaurant together.

Shen Yanzhou had intended to take her home.

But they ran into Yan Cheng and Lu Zhishen at the entrance.

”What a coincidence,” Su Miaoyi said, noticing they were both dressed formally underneath their down jackets.

Shen Yanzhou looked at them. ”A blind date?”

Yan Cheng and Lu Zhishen opened their mouths at the same time, then closed them again.

Su Miaoyi looked from one to the other, surprised. ”Are you two on a blind date with each other?”

Yan Cheng: ”...”

Lu Zhishen explained, ”He was on his, I was on mine.”

Shen Yanzhou couldn’t help but let out a laugh.

Su Miaoyi turned and glanced at him.

Shen Yanzhou cleared his throat and stopped laughing.

”Didn’t go well?” Su Miaoyi asked.

”The other party wasn’t too pleased with my profession,” Yan Cheng said.

”She wasn’t happy with my profession, either,” Lu Zhishen added.
