I See Murders Before They Happen

Chapter 55: Chapter 53: Fighting Side by Side

As soon as they saw Lu Jing, everyone rushed downstairs.

When Zhuang Yanzheng reached the ground floor, he saw Lu Jing getting into a white car from his vantage point by the perimeter wall’s railing.

Before the car drove off, she even rolled down the window and waved at Zhuang Yanzheng.

”Get in the car!” Zhuang Yanzheng shouted.

There were five of them in total, with two cars.

Everyone immediately got into the cars and gave chase.

Qi Feng was in the passenger seat, with two other officers in the back.

Zhuang Yanzheng quickly spotted Lu Jing’s car.

When Lu Jing had left the hospital yesterday afternoon, she was driving a black car.

”Hold on,” Zhuang Yanzheng said, slamming on the accelerator to follow her.

But Lu Jing sped up.

Zhuang Yanzheng turned on the siren to clear a path through traffic.

Lu Jing drove at a breakneck pace, her turns left and right clearly deliberate.

”She’s leading us somewhere,” Qi Feng said.

”Yeah,” Zhuang Yanzheng replied. ”Everyone, be careful.”

After saying that, he told Qi Feng to call the station for backup.

’No matter what’s ahead, we have to make the arrest.’

’No one can back down.’

Lu Jing drove her car into an alley.

The alley was so narrow that her side mirrors were scraped off as she entered, but she kept driving a long way in until the car got stuck.

She opened the sunroof and climbed out.

Zhuang Yanzheng’s car didn’t follow her in.

Qi Feng lived in this area; he knew this was a dead-end alley.

Everyone got out of the car.

As they chased her into the alley, they saw Lu Jing jump from the roof of her car and run deeper inside.

Zhuang Yanzheng and the others quickly ran after her.

Su Miaoyi followed behind them.

She had come in the other car.

When Zhuang Yanzheng got out of his car and saw her, he gave her a second look.

Su Miaoyi just said quickly, ”Don’t worry about me. I can protect myself, and it’s not necessarily safe staying back there either.”

Hearing the tone of her voice, Zhuang Yanzheng instinctively swallowed the words of protest he was about to say.

They scrambled over the vehicle and continued the chase. In the distance, they saw Lu Jing climb a ladder up a wall, then kick the ladder over.

The wall was too high; it was impossible for one person to get up without some kind of assistance.

As they neared the end of the alley, Su Miaoyi called out to him from behind, ”Zhuang Yanzheng.”

Zhuang Yanzheng reacted on instinct.

He dropped into a horse stance by the wall and interlocked his hands.

Without even breaking stride, Su Miaoyi ran straight up and used his hands as a foothold.

Zhuang Yanzheng thrust his hands upward, launching her. Su Miaoyi grabbed the edge of the wall.

With a pull of her arms and a push off the wall with her feet, she was up.

Then, she reached her arm down. Zhuang Yanzheng took a running start, jumped, and grabbed her hand.

Su Miaoyi pulled up as Zhuang Yanzheng kicked off the wall, and he was up too.

The whole process was incredibly fast, their teamwork perfectly synchronized.

Before Qi Feng and the others could even right the fallen ladder, the two of them had already disappeared over the wall.

On the other side of the wall was someone’s rooftop.

Lu Jing was already running across the connected rooftops.

Zhuang Yanzheng and Su Miaoyi immediately gave chase.

After the row of rooftops, there was a three-story building ahead.

It had an external staircase.

Lu Jing went up the stairs, straight to the roof.

Zhuang Yanzheng and Su Miaoyi continued their pursuit.

Beyond that roof was another row of buildings.

Su Miaoyi leaped across three buildings in a row.

She caught up to Lu Jing.

Their target was right in front of them.

Zhuang Yanzheng moved in and engaged Lu Jing in a fight.

Meanwhile, Su Miaoyi crouched at the edge of the roof, her legs trembling slightly.

It suddenly hit her that she had just leaped across three buildings, and her heart pounded in her chest.

Each one was three stories high.

And the gaps between them didn’t feel that small.

’How did I dare to do that?’

’If I had fallen, one unlucky bounce and I would have left this world again.’

Beyond the fear, Su Miaoyi wondered why she’d thought of leaving this world ’again’.

”Useless! Help him!” the voice in her head suddenly rang out.

”My legs are weak, I can’t get up,” Su Miaoyi said.

”You always drop the ball when it counts,” the voice in her head cursed.

Then, Su Miaoyi’s gaze turned cold.

She looked up at Zhuang Yanzheng and Lu Jing.

The others hadn’t followed them onto the rooftops; they were down below.

A few seconds later, she moved forward to help.

Lu Jing was very skilled.

Even in a two-on-one fight, Lu Jing held her own for quite a while.

She clutched a dagger, every slash aimed to kill Zhuang Yanzheng.

Su Miaoyi kicked her away.

Lu Jing used the momentum to spin around, her dagger slashing toward Zhuang Yanzheng again.

The sound of people coming upstairs echoed from below.

Seeing she was outmatched, Lu Jing turned her attention to Su Miaoyi.

Her dagger slashed toward Su Miaoyi.

Su Miaoyi sidestepped to dodge.

Lu Jing’s dagger continued its arc, heading for Zhuang Yanzheng again.

Su Miaoyi shoved Zhuang Yanzheng and tilted her head aside, but Lu Jing grabbed her by the hair.

Her hair was usually tied up, but it had come loose during the chase.

It was a total mess.

Having not been washed for a day and a night, her slightly greasy hair was yanked, pulling her a step back.

Su Miaoyi grabbed her own hair, trying to pull it free.

But Lu Jing held on to a large handful, dead set on pulling her over to use as a hostage.

Zhuang Yanzheng wanted to advance but had to dodge several wild swings from Lu Jing’s dagger.

Unable to free her hair, Su Miaoyi looked down and saw another knife tucked into Lu Jing’s waistband.

She stopped resisting and allowed herself to be pulled in front of Lu Jing.

Then she drew the knife from Lu Jing’s waistband, raised her hand, and cut off her own hair.

At the same time, Zhuang Yanzheng grabbed the wrist of the hand Lu Jing used to hold the dagger.

With a hard squeeze, the dagger fell from her grasp.

Zhuang Yanzheng pinned her down.

Su Miaoyi looked at Zhuang Yanzheng, then at the hair scattered on the ground. ”If you’d told me you could beat her, I wouldn’t have cut my hair.”

”Who knew you were so fast?” Zhuang Yanzheng said as he handcuffed Lu Jing, also glancing at the hair on the ground.

”She’s so skilled. What if she breaks free?” Su Miaoyi mused, rubbing her chin. ”Just knock her out. To be safe.”

Zhuang Yanzheng stared at her. ”...”

Su Miaoyi fell silent.

’They were police officers; they had to treat even criminals humanely.’

”What’s this?” Su Miaoyi asked, spotting a sealed bag that had fallen from Lu Jing’s pocket.

Zhuang Yanzheng looked over as well.

Su Miaoyi put back on the gloves she had stuffed in her pocket and picked up the sealed bag.

Inside was a single wooden bead.

Zhuang Yanzheng’s eyelashes trembled when he saw the wooden bead.

Su Miaoyi examined the bead closely and saw the characters carved on it. ”Qin... Le... Yan.”

After saying the name, she whipped her head around to look at Lu Jing.

’She works for that man!’

...

They took her directly back to the station.

Zhuang Yanzheng began the interrogation.

Su Miaoyi felt like she didn’t even have the strength to go home.

She hadn’t slept at all last night, kept awake by a jolt of energy from a piece of candy, only to completely drain her stamina afterward.

Now that she was finally resting, she felt she didn’t have an ounce of strength left.

So she went to their break room.

And collapsed onto a bed.

She closed her eyes.

”You are weak,” the voice in her head suddenly said.

Su Miaoyi opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling. ”For crying out loud, I’m exhausted right now. Can you not pop up at a time like this? Just let me sleep for a bit.”

”If I were as weak as you, I wouldn’t be able to sleep.”

”Don’t push it,” Su Miaoyi said. ”I’m trying. I’m trying really hard.”

”Not enough,” came the two faint words.

Su Miaoyi took a deep breath. ”I get it. I’ll keep trying. Now just let me sleep, or I might die from sudden cardiac arrest.”

After she said that, she paused for a few seconds before continuing, ”If I die, what will happen to you? Will you still be here? In what form do you exist? Why are you inside my body? Am I able to see those visions because of you?”

”You talk too much.”

”If you just answered my questions, I wouldn’t have so much to say,” Su Miaoyi said to the ceiling. ”Also, who are you?”

She waited for a moment, but there was no reply.

”Are you still there?” Su Miaoyi asked. ”Hello? Hello? HELLO!”

’Gone again.’

’It always disappears whenever I ask a critical question!’
