Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

A week later, Inter arrived in Gelsenkirchen for the return leg, and pretty much everyone following European football already knew how the night would unfold.

Down 4-2 from the clash in Milan and facing Schalke’s four away goals, Inter had to win by three clear goals inside a noisy Veltins-Arena that rarely showed mercy to traveling teams. The Italian newspapers had spent the past five days hinting that Leonardo’s real attention was on Serie A, where Inter sat two points behind AC Milan with a legitimate shot at the scudetto.

Leonardo said all the standard things during his pre-match press conference about honoring the tournament and fighting until the final whistle, but nobody in the room bought it, not even Leonardo himself.

Magath made sure none of that relaxed talk seeped into his own dressing room.

”If any of you walk onto that pitch thinking this tie is already won,” Magath said during the tactical meeting the afternoon before kickoff, ”we will embarrass ourselves right in front of sixty thousand home supporters. We are not doing that. We play this ninety minutes as if the score is tied at zero. We stay disciplined, we keep possession, we frustrate them, and we see out the match with our heads held high.”

He paused, resting his hands on the back of a chair, and looked toward the back row.

”Raúl starts.”

A quiet buzz went through the room, the good kind that lifted everyone’s mood. The veteran forward had spent weeks working his way back from injury, easing into full training. A starting spot in a Champions League knockout tie was a big statement.

Magath had saved him specifically for this kind of contest, a controlled home leg where the team could dictate the tempo, allowing a three-time European champion to steady the nerves of a young squad.

Raúl looked across the room and gave Magath a steady, knowing nod.

The match unfolded almost exactly the way Magath drew it up on the whiteboard.

Inter came out aggressive in the opening twenty minutes, trying to salvage some pride for their supporters. Schalke let them push. The German side dropped into the same disciplined block that had frustrated Inter at the San Siro. This time, there was zero panic on the pitch. Defending a two-goal lead with four away goals tucked away made for a remarkably calm evening.

Neuer scooped up a couple of early speculative crosses with ease. Mateo dropped deep to receive the ball, calmly working it side to side, running Inter’s midfield in circles until the visitors began to realize they were chasing shadows.

By the half-hour mark, Raúl completely ran the show.

He floated into the gaps between Inter’s midfield and defense, playing crisp one-touch layoffs and constantly facing forward. He and Mateo developed an immediate rhythm that had the home fans on their feet.

Mateo and Raúl played sharp triangles around Cambiasso and Stanković as if they had shared a pitch for a decade. Twice, Raúl slipped clever disguised passes through the lines to send Mateo into space. A few minutes later, Mateo returned the favor, rolling a reverse ball into the box that had César diving at full stretch to push Raúl’s flick around the post.

The opening goal came in the 40th minute, and it was the exact moment the stadium had been waiting to see.

Mateo intercepted a loose ball in the middle, drove straight at the retreating defense, and waited for two Inter markers to step up before sliding a pass to his left. Raúl timed his run to perfection, drifting off the shoulder of Ranocchia into the open grass. He collected the ball in stride, took one small touch to balance himself, and rolled a cool, low finish across César into the far corner of the net. There was no brute force behind it, just clean technique and perfect placement.

Raúl simply raised one hand, pointed toward the stands, and soaked in the sound of sixty thousand people roaring his name.

The stadium went wild. The supporters were happy to lock down the tie, of course, but seeing their legendary number seven scoring on a European night after weeks on the treatment table turned the terrace into an absolute party. Mateo was the first one to reach him, wrapping the veteran in a big hug, and Raúl broke his usual calm demeanor to flash a wide, genuine grin.

That made it 1-0 on the night and 5-2 on aggregate.

The second half turned into a routine exercise in clock management.

Schalke added a second shortly after the hour mark. Farfán whipped a low, driven cross into the box from the right flank, and Vardy slipped in front of his marker at the near post to poke the ball into the roof of the net. It was pure predatory instinct from the Englishman, putting the aggregate score at 6-2.

Inter managed a late consolation goal twenty minutes from the end, when Sneijder curled a clean free kick into the top corner, but nobody on the pitch or in the stands cared.

With fifteen minutes left on the clock, Magath signaled for a change. He pulled Raúl off so the crowd could show their appreciation, and the entire stadium stood up to give the Spaniard a thunderous standing ovation. Raúl walked toward the dugout, clapping his hands above his head toward every corner of the arena. Mateo watched him take his seat on the bench, thinking back to all the grueling rehab sessions in the gym that nobody on the outside ever saw.

When the referee blew the final whistle, the celebration was calm and assured.

The squad had known for seven days that they were going through. The miracle had happened in Milan; tonight was just putting the final signature on the paperwork. Players from both sides traded shirts and shared respectful handshakes before Schalke gathered in a loose circle near the halfway line to salute the supporters.

Schalke 04 were in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

They were officially among the final four clubs in Europe. A provincial club with a bargain squad and an eighteen-year-old at the centre of everything, was now just two matches away from a final. Magath stood quietly by the technical area, watching the fans sing under the stadium lights, finally allowing himself to smile at what this squad had put together.

The semi-final draw was on Friday, just two days away.
