Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

It hammered the underside of the woodwork with such force that, for an agonizing split second, nobody in the stadium could tell if the ball had crossed the line. Roman Weidenfeller was sprawled helplessly across his goalmouth, twisting his neck without the faintest clue where the rebound had gone. A sharp gasp sucked the air out of the South Stand. Thirty-five yards upfield, Farfán had already thrown both arms out to celebrate what looked like the strike of his life.

The leather rebounded off the metal, ricocheting back into the heart of the eighteen-yard box at blistering speed.

Mateo was still at a dead sprint.

If someone had asked him why he kept chasing the play, he probably could not have put it into words. Farfán’s strike had looked destined for the top corner the instant it left his laces, and nearly every yellow and blue shirt on the pitch had frozen in place to admire the spectacle. Mateo simply had not stopped. The predatory instincts that had been nudging him into the box all afternoon pushed his legs forward, demanding he track the shot on the off chance it spilled loose.

The loose ball came straight back toward him. It climbed off the crossbar right at eye level, carrying far too much pace to cushion comfortably and dipping too high to strike off the bounce, arriving in the brief window before three recovering Dortmund defenders could scramble back into position.

Taking a controlling touch was out of the question. The moment he tried to tame it, two center-backs would have tackled him into the turf. Bringing it down with his chest for a second touch to shoot would have killed the opening completely.

He fused the entire sequence into a single reflex.

Mateo leapt into the air, angling his shoulders as the ball arrived, meeting it with his sternum and snapping his right boot upward in the same continuous rotation. His chest did not kill the pace; it simply glanced the ball downward by a few inches, dropping it right onto the sweet spot of his rising laces.

His boot met the descending ball with a clean, explosive snap.

The volley tore downward with vicious power. Weidenfeller, still desperately scrambling back to his feet after diving for the original shot, was completely stranded.

The ball ripped into the bottom corner before the keeper could even plant a hand on the grass.

A heavy, disbelieving silence gripped the entire ground, eighty thousand people trying to process the sheer audacity of what had just unfolded.

Then the blue corner exploded in celebration. Substitutes and coaching staff spilled over the Schalke bench, and Mateo drifted toward the corner flag with his arms spread wide, tipping his chin up toward the cloudy sky to let the roar wash over him.

A hat-trick. At the Westfalenstadion.

Three goals in the Ruhr Derby, capped off by an airborne chest-and-volley gathered off his own teammate’s thirty-five-yard missile. It was the kind of outrageous sequence that was going to loop on every sports broadcast across Europe before the night was out.

Farfán was the first man to reach him. Instead of celebrating his own thunderous strike, the Peruvian clamped both hands around Mateo’s collar, shaking him back and forth with a wild mix of genuine disbelief and hilarious outrage.

”That was my goal, you thief!” Farfán yelled over the din of the away end, his face splitting into a wide grin. ”That shot was heading straight into the top corner, man! You literally stole the goal of my career with your chest!”

”The woodwork said otherwise,” Mateo laughed, nearly stumbling as Farfán kept shaking him. ”You rattled the bar, so somebody had to clean up the mess. That’s just proper teamwork.”

”Proper teamwork?” Farfán let out an incredulous laugh, clutching his own head. ”I put everything into a thirty-five-yard screamer, the ball explodes back into your face at ninety miles an hour, and you turn it into a flying chest-volley? Who even thinks about running in for that? Normal players stop to watch!”

”You always tell me to follow the play,” Mateo said, catching his breath with a grin.

”I tell you to run, not to perform circus tricks on my rebounds,” Farfán said, finally throwing his arms around Mateo’s neck in a fierce hug. ”You crazy kid. You unbelievable, crazy kid.”

Huntelaar piled in from behind, followed by Jermaine Jones and the rest of the outfielders, burying Mateo beneath a frantic mountain of blue jerseys near the corner flag. High above them, the twenty-five thousand ultras on the South Stand stared down at the scoreboard in numb silence, drained of enough energy that they could barely muster a whistle.

4-0.

Over by the technical area, Felix Magath reached out and grabbed Hughes Yves tightly by the forearm.

”Hughes, look at me,” Magath muttered, his eyes glued to the pitch. ”Tell me this is actually happening.”

Yves could not help a small smile. ”It is happening, boss. You’re wide awake.”

”Four goals to nil. Away at Dortmund. In the derby.” Magath released his assistant’s arm and ran both hands over his cropped hair, looking like a veteran who had suddenly witnessed a miracle he had given up on years ago. ”If we see this out, we take first place. We sit at the very top of the table by tonight. Do you realize what that means?”

”I know exactly what it means, boss,” Yves replied, keeping his voice level. ”It puts the title right in our hands.”

”Do not start getting comfortable,” Magath snapped quickly, pointing a stern finger at the turf. ”There is nearly half an hour of football left. Thirty minutes is an eternity in this fixture.”

”Boss, they’re completely gassed. They don’t have another run in them.”

”Quiet,” Magath whispered, shaking his head as he paced back toward the dugout. ”Don’t tempt fate. The second you get cocky is the exact minute a match turns into a nightmare.”

Yet deep down, everyone in the stadium recognized that the contest was effectively finished. Dortmund had poured every ounce of their emotional reserve into that ferocious fifteen-minute blitz after the break. They had pushed forward, tested Neuer, rattled the woodwork, and run straight into an incredible goal-line block from a teenager. Now, sitting four goals down with heavy legs and bruised pride, the fight had drained out of them, leaving them to wonder how many more Schalke might push past Weidenfeller before the final whistle blew.

Magath sat on the bench, stood right back up, and walked to the touchline again, simply unable to sit still while watching his number thirty-eight jog back to the center circle with a quiet, composed smile.

Across the technical area, Jürgen Klopp had stopped pacing completely.

He stood with his arms crossed over his black jacket, staring at the pitch with a blank, hardened expression. There were no clever tactical tweaks left to make from the sideline. He had rolled the dice at halftime, his young squad had given him every drop of sweat they had for fifteen frantic minutes, and the gamble had simply shattered against an impenetrable defense and a ruthless counter-attack. Now he was just a manager enduring the bitter reality of a derby thrashing, waiting for the clock to run out so the grueling aftermath of press conferences, inquests, and the quiet bus journey could begin.

His gaze lingered on Mateo Silva as the boy lined up for the restart. A cold, professional thought crossed Klopp’s mind, clear and sharp despite the humiliation washing over his home ground: We had that boy right inside our youth system, and we let him walk straight out the door.

Klopp unfolded his arms, barked a brief positional instruction that was swallowed whole by the roaring away end, and turned back to the painful task of seeing out the remainder of the match with his chin up.
