I Was Summoned as the Weakest Hero, But I Awakened a Military System

The advance through the city was steady, relentless, and completely uncontested.

Port Solis had ceased to function as a fortress. The relentless naval bombardment had shattered every defensive strongpoint, caved in the barracks, and collapsed the central avenues into impassable canyons of stone.

The Marines moved along the primary avenues, supported by the slow, menacing crawl of the Abrams tanks and LAV-25 armored vehicles. Above them, two AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters hovered low over the ruined rooftops, their 20mm rotary cannons tracking every alleyway and open courtyard.

Whenever an armed imperial soldier crawled out from the rubble—whether a disoriented paladin clutching an enchanted sword or a city guardsman attempting to raise a crossbow—the response was instant. A single, coordinated burst of 5.56mm fire from the advancing infantry lines dropped them before they could close the distance.

There were no formal duels. There were no clashes of steel. It was a cold, systematic clearing of an active combat zone.

As the units pushed deeper into the lower residential quarters, the nature of the operation shifted.

Thousands of surviving imperial civilians were huddled inside collapsed basements, beneath the arches of ruined stone aqueducts, and within the smoldering basements of the merchant quarter. They were covered in gray soot, coughing from the sulfur smoke, their eyes wide with terror as the strange, armored foreign soldiers moved down their streets.

A platoon of Marines halted at the edge of the central market square.

Dozens of townspeople—laborers, shopkeepers, and families—cowered behind an overturned stone cart, weeping and raising empty, trembling hands.

”Hold fire! Civilians only!” the squad leader barked, raising a clenched fist.

Through loudhailers mounted on the light armored vehicles, pre-recorded messages in fluent Solarian began playing across the square:

”Attention citizens of Port Solis. Keep your hands visible. Do not run. Do not approach the vehicles. Drop all edged tools, knives, and metal implements. You are in a secured military zone. Move to the center of the avenue for processing.”

The civilians obeyed immediately. Nobody resisted. The sheer shock of the naval bombardment had broken every ounce of imperial pride; they had watched the golden dome of their goddess shatter into dust, and they had watched their grand palaces flatten in minutes.

Marines moved in with zip-ties, securing the wrists of the adult males to prevent sudden insurgent attacks, while medical corpsmen established triage stations directly on the ruined cobblestones. Bottles of clean water and field rations were distributed from the backs of transport trucks, keeping the crowds contained, quiet, and under constant guard.

”Central district pacified,” Richter’s voice came over the command network. ”We have established three civilian internment compounds in the open squares. Approximately four thousand non-combatants detained. No organized resistance encountered.”

On the deck of the Gerald R. Ford, John Smith watched the final reports populate the digital map.

The glowing red threat indicators over Port Solis had all turned into dull, stable blue markers. The harbor was secure. The primary objectives had been recovered. The city was under total United States military control.

John turned from the railing and walked back toward the flight deck, his boots clicking rhythmically against the steel surface.

”Prepare my transport,” John said to the flight officer on duty.

”Sir, the city is still heavily contested in the upper palace sector,” Donovan cautioned, stepping forward. ”There could be unexploded ordnance, structural collapses, or remnant traps.”

”The city is dead, Admiral,” John replied, his voice flat and detached. ”Richter holds the ground. It’s time I set foot on that shore.”

Ten minutes later, an MH-60S Seahawk lifted off the carrier’s deck, flanked by two Viper gunships.

The helicopter flew low over the five miles of dark water, crossing the pulverized outer breakwater and banking smoothly over the harbor mouth.

From the air, the destruction was absolute. Port Solis looked like a giant stone quarry that had been detonated from within. Fires still burned along the waterfront warehouses, and thick columns of black smoke rose into the overcast sky.

The Seahawk touched down with a gentle bump on the cleared section of the forward quay, right where the LCACs had established their command post.

The side door slid open.

John stepped out into the cold ocean wind, the sharp scent of burnt fuel and wet ashes hitting him instantly. Colonel Richter and Elenore were waiting at the base of the landing zone, standing at attention with helmets in hand.

John walked slowly across the stone, his eyes looking down at the dark, dried stain where General Phillip had fallen hours before.

He stopped there for a moment, silent. The wind whipped through his hair.

”The General’s remains?” John asked softly.

”Secured aboard the America, sir,” Richter answered. ”Along with the four operators. They’re accounted for.”

John gave a single, slow nod. He reached into his pocket, his fingers brushing against Phillip’s spare silver rank insignia, before letting his hand drop back to his side.

”And the three?”

”In the medical transport on the dock,” Elenore said, stepping forward. ”Locked down in heavy tungsten cuffs. Sedated and stable. They won’t be waking up for hours.”

John looked toward the high bluff in the distance, where the ruined shell of the royal palace stood hollow against the gray clouds. Viona was gone, fleeing deeper into the continent, leaving behind only the broken pieces of her ambition.

”Establish the forward operating base,” John commanded, turning his back on the sea and looking into the heart of the conquered city. ”Set up defensive perimeters around the port, fortify the roads, and begin processing the detainees. When the heroes wake up, I want them in an interrogation room.”

He paused, his eyes narrowing as he looked toward the western horizon.

”This was just their forward gate. The real empire is still out there. Let’s make sure they know what’s coming.”

Heavy transport trucks groaned as they hauled concertina wire and concrete modular barriers down from the landing ramps, staking out the forward operating base perimeter. Armed patrol units began their slow, rhythmic sweeps along the outer walls, setting up motion sensors and thermal cameras overlooking the highway to the capital. The empire’s strongest port had fallen in less than a day, reduced to an armed American supply hub while the ashes of its broken pantheon settled into the dirt.
