The Captain's Dirty Little Secret

Chapter 141: Chapter 141 - A Different Kind of Hell

The state routine was already on the board when Roxie walked into the gym.

That was the first warning.

Coach Miller usually let them breathe for at least five minutes. He usually waited until everyone changed shoes, tied hair, filled bottles, complained, stretched, and pretended they were mentally ready before he started ruining their bodies.

Today, he stood under the board with a marker in one hand and his whistle hanging against his chest.

The whiteboard behind him was full.

STATE ROUTINE DRAFT.

Opening pyramid upgrade.

Dance counts tighter.

New tumbling pass.

Basket sequence.

Stunt transition cleanup.

Full out timing.

Practice extension.

Holiday schedule.

Roxie stopped near the sideline and stared at the last two words.

Holiday schedule.

Her bag felt heavier on her shoulder.

All around her, the team came in slower than usual, still riding the Monday school hype until they saw Coach Miller’s face. Conversations dropped. Water bottles hit the floor. Sneakers squeaked against the court.

Kendall walked in behind Roxie and made a small sound.

Karen appeared at Roxie’s other side, eyes on the board. ”Well. He woke up violent.”

Roxie pulled her hair higher and wrapped the tie around it. ”At least he committed.”

Coach Miller clapped once.

The whole gym went quiet.

”Circle up.”

Nobody joked.

Nobody asked for music.

Even the freshmen moved fast.

Roxie dropped her bag near the wall and joined the circle. Her legs protested when she sat. Yesterday’s soreness had settled deep in her thighs, and the walk from last period to the gym had already made her knees feel loose in the worst way.

She rolled her shoulders and ignored it.

Cheer was the thing she could still control.

School could pile on finals. The house could keep needing money. The grill could keep texting. Claire could keep existing somewhere outside the shape of being a mother.

But cheer had counts.

Cheer had positions.

Cheer had hit, clean, hold, land.

Coach Miller looked around the circle, and whatever small hope they had for a normal practice died right there.

”Regionals got us here,” he said. ”State can embarrass us if we walk in with a regional level routine.”

A few girls shifted.

Roxie kept her eyes on him.

”We placed third because you hit. That matters. I am proud of that.” Coach Miller pointed the marker at the board. ”But Riverside Gale and Westbrook showed us exactly where the gap is.”

Kendall’s chin lifted slightly.

Roxie knew that look.

These past few weeks, Kendall had been acting like every correction from Coach Miller came with her personal signature at the bottom.

Coach Miller kept going. ”So today, we start building a State routine. That means longer practices. That means full effort every day. Finals week is coming, and I expect you to manage your time like athletes who want to stay eligible.”

A soft groan moved through the circle.

Coach Miller’s eyes narrowed. ”I heard that.”

The groan vanished.

He tapped the bottom of the board.

”And yes, we will have practices during Christmas break.”

Roxie’s stomach tightened.

Christmas break meant more shifts at the grill because people ate out more, tipped better, and called out more. Christmas break meant bills. It meant groceries. It meant pretending she had plans when Angela and Karen asked what she was doing.

Kendall raised a hand. ”How many practices?”

Coach Miller smiled without warmth. ”Enough.”

Karen would have hated that answer.

Roxie almost smiled, then remembered she was hungry.

That killed the smile fast.

She had eaten half a granola bar between classes because it was all she had left in her bag. It had turned into dust in her mouth and disappeared like a bad joke. Now her stomach felt empty and mean, but she stood when Coach Miller blew the whistle.

”Warmup. Lines. Now.”

The warmup was not a warmup.

It was punishment with counts.

High knees. Jump sequences. Core. Lunges. More jumps. Motions held until shoulders shook. Coach Miller walked along the lines and corrected wrists, elbows, chins, timing.

”Sharp means sharp, ladies.”

”Again.”

”Your arms are late.”

”Again.”

”Smile through it. State judges will not care that your thighs hurt.”

Roxie smiled because he told her to.

Her face obeyed easier than her body.

By the time they started the upgraded stunt sequence, sweat had collected under her collar and her legs already felt used up.

Coach Miller placed Roxie’s group near center.

”Opening pyramid needs height,” he said. ”You wanna beat them, you need to work more.”

Roxie took her place.

Kendall stood close enough to be annoying, because of course she did.

The counts started.

”One, two, dip, up.”

Bodies moved around Roxie. Bases set. Flyers rose. Back spots called low corrections. The first lift hit, but the transition out dragged half a count.

Coach Miller’s whistle cut through the music.

”Again.”

They reset.

Again.

Again.

The third time, Roxie felt the strain crawl up her calves. She locked her knees too hard on the landing and forced her expression to stay clean.

Kendall caught it.

Roxie saw the look before Kendall opened her mouth.

Great.

The upgraded sequence moved into the new transition, faster than their regional routine and less forgiving. Roxie hit her mark, turned, prepped, and moved into the next count.

Half a beat late.

It was small.

It was still there.

Kendall snapped her head toward her. ”You miss that at State, we all hit the floor.”

Roxie’s pulse jumped.

”Then don’t stand under me.”

The gym went quiet around them in pieces.

A few girls froze mid reset.

Kendall’s eyes sharpened. ”Excuse me?”

Coach Miller’s whistle cracked through the air before Roxie could answer.

”Enough.”

Roxie looked away first because if she kept looking at Kendall, she would say something worse.

Coach Miller crossed the floor toward them, face hard.

”Roxie. Kendall. Center line.”

They moved.

The whole team watched, pretending they were busy adjusting shoes and ponytails.

Coach Miller stopped in front of them. ”This is State prep. I need captains. I have enough teenagers.”

Kendall’s mouth pressed flat.

Roxie kept her face still.

Coach Miller’s attention shifted to her. ”You were late.”

”I know.”

”Then fix it.”

”I will.”

”Your attitude cannot save you if you are the reason the team loses.”

Roxie swallowed her pride.

That hit because it was close enough to the ugly truth.

Her body was not moving sharp. Her counts were dragging. Her legs felt hollow, and she could feel the difference between being tired from practice and being tired from running herself on almost nothing.

She understood it.

She just hated that it showed.

Coach Miller looked between them. ”Again from the transition. Clean. Controlled. Both of you.”

Kendall returned to her spot.

Roxie followed.

The next round hit better.

The one after that was cleaner.

By the time they moved to dance counts, Roxie’s legs were shaking every time the music stopped.

Coach Miller made them repeat the eight count section until every head turn matched and every arm snapped into place at the same time. Kendall was sharp. Too sharp. The kind of sharp that came with making a point.

Roxie matched her because pride had enough fuel even when food did not.

Then came tumbling.

Coach Miller pointed at the board again. ”The pass changes today.”

Someone whispered, ”Already?”

”Yes,” Coach Miller said. ”Already.”

The new pass demanded more speed, cleaner spacing, and less recovery time before the next formation. Roxie watched the first group go and felt the gym tilt slightly in her vision.

She blinked once.

Then again.

Fine.

She was fine.

Her turn came.

She ran.

Her body knew the pass. Her arms moved. Her feet hit the mat. She pushed through the first skill, then the next, then snapped into the landing with her chest lifted.

For a second, she thought she had pulled it off.

Then her heel shifted.

Tiny.

Barely visible.

Visible enough.

Coach Miller’s whistle blew.

”Roxie. Again.”

Her lungs burned.

She nodded.

Kendall watched from the side with her arms crossed.

Roxie went again.

This time, she landed clean.

The team clapped, but Coach Miller’s face stayed serious.

”Better. Again with the group.”

Practice stretched past the usual ending time.

Nobody cheered when Coach Miller finally called water. They moved toward their bottles like survivors of a legal crime.

Roxie took a long drink and checked the wall clock.

She had work after this.

Her phone was in her bag, and the need to check it pulled at her. Zac had football practice. He was probably getting crushed too. His body had looked bad in the hallway, even under the act he gave everyone else.

She wondered if he had eaten.

That thought annoyed her because he would absolutely ask her the same thing first.

By the last full out, Roxie felt every count in her bones. Her smile stayed up because it had to. Her arms hit because they had to. She forced her body through each motion with the kind of focus that left no space for hunger, work, bills, or the phone probably buzzing in her bag.

When the music ended, the team froze in final position.

The silence lasted one breath.

Then Coach Miller said, ”That is closer.”

Nobody moved.

”Closer,” he repeated. ”We are still nowhere near ready.”

The final pose broke.

Girls bent over their knees. Someone sat straight down on the mat. A flyer cursed under her breath and then apologized automatically.

Coach Miller pointed at the board. ”Tomorrow, we clean the pyramid and lock the new pass. Wednesday, we add the second upgrade. Thursday, full out with conditioning. Friday, football blackout means nothing to me. You practice before the game.”

That earned actual protests.

Coach Miller waited them out.

”You want State? This is State.”

Roxie wiped sweat from her neck with the bottom of her shirt and tried to calculate time.

Practice before Friday’s game. Work. Finals. Maybe sleep if the universe briefly forgot about her.

Coach Miller dismissed the team, but before Roxie could reach her bag, his voice stopped her.

”Roxie. Stay a minute.”

Kendall looked over.

Roxie ignored her.

The team filtered out in tired waves, shoes squeaking, bottles clattering, voices rising now that Coach Miller had released them. Kendall took her time near the door, clearly listening without looking like she was listening.

Coach Miller noticed too. ”Kendall, go home.”

Kendall smiled sweetly. ”I was tying my shoe.”

”Your shoe is tied.”

Her smile vanished. ”Fine.”

She left.

Roxie nodded and waved at Angela and Karen going to the exit. She stood with her arms crossed, sweat cooling on her skin.

Coach Miller capped his marker and set it on the bench. ”We need to talk about college.”

Roxie’s guard went up immediately.

”No.”

His eyebrows lifted. ”That was fast.”

”I have State.”

”You have State, finals, and a future after both.”

Roxie looked toward the door.

Coach Miller softened his voice, which made the whole thing worse. ”Recommendation letters need time. College coaches need footage, contact, applications, schedules. You have State coming, and that can help you if we use it properly.”

”State first,” Roxie said.

”State is exactly why we need to talk about college.”

Her jaw tightened.

She was tired of talking about college.

As if planning fed you.

As if applications paid electric bills.

As if a recommendation letter could cover a closing shift.

”I have it handled,” Roxie said.

Coach Miller studied her. ”Do you?”

She forced a smile. ”I’m captain, remember?”

”I remember. I also remember captains are allowed to ask for help.”

Roxie picked up her bag. ”I’ll work on the transition.”

”That was not what I asked.”

”I know.”

His mouth tightened, but he let her move.

For now.

”Eat before tomorrow,” he said.

Roxie stopped for half a second.

Then she kept walking. ”Yes, Coach.”

Her phone was waiting in her bag with four notifications.

One from Angela.

One from the cheer group chat.

Two from Zac.

Zac: Still alive?

Ten minutes later.

Zac: That bad?

Roxie leaned against the hallway wall outside the gym and typed with her thumb.

Roxie: Barely.

His reply came fast.

Zac: I can see you?

Roxie stared at the words.

Her chest warmed in a way her body had no energy for.

She wanted to say yes.

That was the dangerous part.

Roxie: I have work.

Zac: I can drive you.

Roxie closed her eyes for one second.

A ride from Zac was never just a ride.

It was timing. It was hallways. It was checking who stayed late. It was figuring out which parking lot exit had fewer people. It was sitting beside him close enough to want things they could only have in hidden spaces.

A ride from Zac meant wanting to stay.

Roxie: No.

Zac: Roxie.

Roxie: I’ll get there.

Zac: That is not what I asked.

She almost smiled because he sounded exactly like himself.

Then her legs trembled under her.

The smile disappeared.

Roxie: I know.

She locked the phone before he could answer.

The gym doors opened behind her.

A few girls came out, their voices bouncing down the hallway as they complained about sore legs, holiday practice, and Coach Miller apparently deciding December was a personal attack.

Roxie pushed off the wall and moved with them toward the exit. Her work shoes sat heavy in her bag. Her legs still felt loose under her, and every step reminded her that the night had barely started.

Outside, the cold hit her damp skin.

She pulled her jacket tighter and started toward the road.

Then she saw the motorcycle near the curb.

Ethan was waiting on it.

Helmet under one arm. One foot planted on the ground. Jacket zipped like he had been there long enough to get comfortable.

Roxie stopped.

Her whole body complained at once.

”What the fuck is he doing here?”

Ethan saw her and lifted his chin.

Then he lifted the extra helmet.

”You’re late, Jones.”

Her phone buzzed inside her bag.

Roxie already knew it was Zac.

She looked from Ethan to her bag, then back to Ethan waiting by the road like her life needed one more problem with wheels.

The phone buzzed again.

Roxie closed her eyes for half a second.

Of course he was here.
