The Captain's Dirty Little Secret

Chapter 129: Chapter 129 - Hit Clean

”Briarwick,” the announcer called, ”take the floor.”

Roxie’s pulse slammed so hard it felt like her whole body answered.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then Coach Miller clapped once.

”Go.”

Roxie stepped into the aisle with Kendall beside her.

The team followed.

Angela’s hand was still wrapped around Karen’s. Karen looked pale under her makeup, but her mouth was set in that stubborn line.

Roxie’s legs felt strange walking down the bleacher steps.

Too light.

Too heavy.

Both at once.

The arena sounded bigger as they got closer to the floor. The crowd blurred into faces and colors. Other teams watched from their sections. Parents leaned forward. Judges sat behind the long table, already looking down at their papers like Briarwick was just another name on a schedule.

Roxie hated that.

She wanted them to look up.

She wanted them to remember.

At the edge of the mat, Coach Miller stopped them.

The team gathered tight.

Kendall stood on one side of the circle.

Roxie stood on the other.

For a second, their eyes met across the middle.

They jogged onto the mat.

Roxie found her opening spot.

Kendall was two counts of space away, chin lifted, smile already in place.

Angela took her spot behind Roxie.

Karen stood across the formation, lips curved like she was about to fight the entire arena.

The music had not started yet.

That was the worst part.

The waiting.

The tiny silence before everything became counts.

Roxie looked toward the bleachers.

Zac stood at the rail.

Dylan and Mason were beside him. Kyle sat with his arms crossed, deadpan face aimed at the floor like he was personally threatening every judge in the building.

Zac’s eyes were on her.

Only her.

His mouth moved.

She couldn’t hear him.

But she knew.

You got this.

Roxie looked forward again.

Her chest lifted.

She could do this.

The music started.

Briarwick moved.

The opening hit hard.

Arms sharp.

Heads snapped.

Smiles on.

Roxie’s body took over before her fear could catch up.

Five, six, seven, eight.

Step.

Turn.

Hit.

Drop.

Up.

The first cheer section came loud from their mouths, clean and bright, and the crowd answered more than Roxie expected. Briarwick colors moved in the bleachers. Someone shouted her name, but she refused to look.

The first formation change came fast.

Roxie crossed behind Kendall, their shoulders almost brushing.

Kendall’s count was clear under the music.

”Five, six, seven, eight.”

Good.

They were together.

The first stunt went up.

Bases locked in. Flyer lifted. Arms tight. Feet steady.

Hit.

The crowd clapped.

Roxie’s smile sharpened.

Second stunt.

Up.

Hold.

Clean.

A rush went through the team. Roxie felt it even without looking. The tiny rise in energy. The way everyone moved half a beat stronger because the first hard thing had worked.

They went into jumps.

Toe touch.

Land.

Smile.

Her thighs screamed.

She ignored them.

Another count.

Another turn.

The music shifted.

Tumbling pass.

Roxie moved into place, chest burning, smile locked on her face so hard her cheeks hurt. Kendall passed her in a blur. Karen hit her mark. Tori landed a clean pass and came up with eyes wide like even she had surprised herself.

The pyramid came next.

This was the part Coach Miller had murdered them over for weeks.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Until Roxie could hear his voice in her sleep.

Bases set.

Flyers stepped in.

Roxie’s hands found their grip.

The crowd noise faded.

Only the count stayed.

One.

Three.

Five.

Lift.

The pyramid rose.

For half a second, Roxie felt the whole routine hang in the air with it.

Then it locked.

Clean.

The crowd reacted.

Louder this time.

Angela’s smile flashed bright near her. Karen’s eyes were wild. Kendall’s face was pure focus.

They held.

Count.

Count.

Down.

Safe.

Clean.

Roxie’s heart kicked hard.

They had it.

They had it.

The dance section hit next, and the crowd finally woke up for them.

Not polite clapping.

Real noise.

Briarwick had always been strong there. Sharp facials. Fast transitions. Energy that looked less polished than Riverside but more alive. Roxie hit every move like Heather was watching from the side and every count was an answer.

Good enough for school?

Fine.

Watch this.

She turned, dropped, snapped her head up, and smiled like the arena belonged to her for those two counts.

Kendall was right beside her.

For once, they looked like captains of the same team.

That thought almost made Roxie laugh.

Then the final stunt sequence came.

Her lungs burned.

Her mouth tasted like lipstick and nerves.

The team moved into position.

This was where tired teams got ugly.

This was where small mistakes became expensive.

Coach Miller stood near the edge of the mat, hands clenched at his sides, face unreadable.

Roxie caught Kendall’s eye.

Kendall nodded once.

The stunt rose clean, not as high and flashy as Riverside’s, but solid. Strong. No shaking. No broken timing. The dismount came down safe, and the team rolled into the final formation with everything they had left.

Roxie’s body hurt everywhere.

Her smile stayed.

Last eight-count.

Five, six, seven, eight.

Hit.

Freeze.

The music cut.

For one impossible second, there was silence.

Then the arena exploded.

Roxie stayed frozen until the count in her head released her.

Then everyone moved at once.

Angela made a sound that was almost a sob.

Karen grabbed her.

Tori screamed.

One of the freshmen started crying immediately.

Roxie turned toward Kendall.

Kendall was breathing hard, eyes bright, face still locked in disbelief.

They had hit.

They had hit clean.

Roxie laughed once, breathless and ugly.

Kendall’s mouth moved like she wanted to say something mean and couldn’t find it.

So Roxie said it first.

”You counted right.”

Kendall laughed.

Actually laughed.

”Shut up, Jones.”

Then the team crashed together.

Arms everywhere. Bows smashed against cheeks. Someone stepped on Roxie’s foot. Karen was yelling, Angela was crying, and Coach Miller was suddenly there, pointing them off the mat before they got penalized for celebrating in the wrong place.

”Move,” he snapped, but his voice sounded different.

Too tight.

Too happy.

Roxie stumbled off the floor with the team, legs shaking from adrenaline.

The second they reached the tunnel, the noise from the bleachers hit them again.

Mason was screaming.

Dylan was clapping hard.

Kyle had actually stood up.

And Zac.

Zac was at the rail, both hands on it, grinning like Briarwick had just won the whole thing.

Roxie looked at him for half a second too long.

His grin softened.

Her stomach dipped.

Then Karen shoved her from behind.

”Move, captain two. I’m about to collapse.”

”I’m captain one.”

”Argue with me when I can feel my legs.”

They made it back to their team section, and everyone dropped into seats or crouched in the aisle. Angela was crying into both hands now.

Roxie sat beside her. ”Why are you crying? We hit.”

”I know,” Angela said, voice muffled. ”That’s why.”

Karen sat on Angela’s other side and patted her knee awkwardly. ”You’re leaking pretty. It’s fine.”

Angela cried harder.

Coach Miller stood in front of them.

Nobody spoke.

For once, even Karen kept quiet.

He looked at the team for a long second.

His jaw moved.

Then he nodded.

”That,” he said, voice rough, ”was a routine.”

The girls burst into noise.

Some laughed.

Some cried harder.

Roxie stared at him.

Coach Miller looked away fast, pretending to check something on his phone.

Roxie saw his mouth twitch.

He was happy.

Really happy.

That scared her almost as much as his yelling.

Their routine had hit.

It had energy.

It had heart.

It had no disaster.

But Riverside had looked bigger. Sharper. Harder. More expensive somehow. Not because Briarwick had failed.

Because Riverside had more.

More difficulty.

More control.

More polish.

More years of being built for that exact floor.

Roxie hated knowing it.

Clean could be enough for top three.

Maybe.

The next teams performed.

Briarwick watched with bodies still buzzing from their own routine.

Some teams were good.

Some were messy.

One team had a flyer come down early, and the entire arena seemed to suck in a breath.

Fairmont took the floor near the end.

Roxie knew them vaguely. Red and green uniforms.

Karen leaned forward. ”Fairmont looks terrified.”

Angela wiped under her eyes carefully. ”They’re cute.”

Roxie watched them set up. They had used part of this routine during the rivalry game, maybe Fairmont had brought more now.

Fairmont’s opening was sweet. Clean enough. Their dance had charm. Their jumps were decent.

Then their first stunt hesitated.

A base adjusted late.

The flyer stayed up, but the timing was off.

Roxie’s stomach tightened.

”Come on,” she whispered before she could stop herself.

Fairmont kept going.

They fought for it.

That was what made it hurt.

They didn’t fall apart. They didn’t give up. They smiled harder when the timing slipped. Their captain called counts under her breath with her face bright and desperate. They saved a pyramid that looked like it wanted to collapse. They finished standing.

The crowd clapped.

Fairmont froze in their final pose.

Then their music cut.

The teams gathered on the floor in rows, each school sitting together in uniform clusters. The judges’ table had been cleared. Coaches stood near the sides. Parents packed the bleachers with phones ready. Banners hung above the mat. The whole arena buzzed with the same question.

Who got state?

Briarwick sat cross-legged near the middle.

Roxie’s knees pressed into the mat.

Angela held one of her hands and one of Karen’s. Karen pretended she was annoyed but did not pull away. Kendall sat on Roxie’s other side, hands clasped tightly in her lap.

Coach Miller stood behind them with his arms crossed.

He looked calm.

That meant nothing.

Roxie had watched him survive an entire week of practice looking calm while verbally destroying them.

Across the mat, Riverside Gale sat in perfect navy rows.

Heather looked composed.

Naturally.

Heather glanced over once.

Roxie met her eyes.

Heather smiled faintly.

Roxie looked away first this time because her heart was beating too hard and she didn’t trust her face.

The announcer walked to the center with a microphone and a stack of papers.

The arena started clapping before she even spoke.

Roxie’s stomach turned.

”Thank you to all teams competing in this year’s Virginia Regional Cheer Competition,” the announcer said.

Roxie barely heard the rest.

Sportsmanship.

Hard work.

Judges.

Scores.

Blah, blah, torture.

Angela squeezed her hand.

Roxie squeezed back.

The announcer started with lower placements.

”Tenth place...”

A team in purple cheered weakly.

”Ninth place...”

More clapping.

”Eighth place...”

Roxie’s pulse pounded.

Fairmont was still sitting stiffly across the mat.

Their captain had both hands locked together.

The announcer looked down.

”In seventh place... Fairmont High School.”

Fairmont’s section clapped.

The girls on the mat stood.

Some smiled.

Some tried.

The captain covered her mouth and cried anyway.

Her teammates wrapped around her immediately. Their coach clapped with red eyes. Parents in the stands shouted for them like shouting could change the number.

Roxie’s chest hurt.

Angela wiped under her eye again.

Karen stared at the mat. ”That sucks.”

No joke.

Just truth.

Fairmont walked up to accept their placement. They took the ribbon. They posed for a picture with tear-wet smiles. Then they returned to their spot with shoulders heavier than before.

Roxie watched them sit.

Seventh.

Not close enough to state.

Not far enough to pretend they had never believed.

The announcer kept going.

”Sixth place...”

”Fifth place...”

Roxie stopped breathing.

Fifth was called.

Not Briarwick.

Angela’s hand crushed hers.

Karen whispered, ”Oh my God.”

Roxie’s eyes burned.

Fourth remained.

The old ghost.

The placement that had ruined last year.

The announcer smiled into the microphone.

”In fourth place...”
