Harry Potter: Most Annoying System Ever

The blue interface blinked, clearing away the glorious image of the automated Muggle hot dog cart to display the final minor reward.

Tier: 1 (Basic)

Name: Cheater’s Roulette

Description: You subjected a high-ranking Ministry official to a game of chance where Player Two’s turn was permanently cancelled, utilizing a non-lethal Muggle weapon to induce blunt-force trauma and extract treasonous secrets. Improvised psychological warfare at its finest.

Reward: 1x Box of Dolores’s Delights (Pink Chocolate Frogs).

Orion stared at the screen, his eyebrows drawing together in pure, unadulterated bafflement.

”Inventory,” he muttered.

A small, ornate, nauseatingly pink cardboard box dropped into his palm. He popped the lid. Inside, resting on wax paper, were six chocolate frogs coated in a thick, shimmering, strawberry-pink confectionery glaze. When he poked one, it let out a faint, high-pitched croak that sounded suspiciously like a girlish ’hem, hem’.

Orion’s face contorted in visceral disgust. He slammed the lid shut.

”What in Merlin’s name is wrong with the algorithm?” Orion whispered, shoving the box into the deepest recess of his grid. ”Pink frogs that clear their throats? I will feed these to the peacocks. Or better yet, leave them on Draco’s pillow. Moving on, Sparkle. What is the Tier 2?”

The interface flared, shedding the cheap blue light and burning with a polished, resplendent silver.

Tier: 2 (Advanced)

Name: The Master of the Briar

Description: You took an ancestral heirloom that violently rejected your eleven-year-old self, refused to submit to its violent tantrums, and successfully conquered its allegiance by forcing an instrument of destruction to manifest blinding, absolute peace. The Thunderbird bows to the storm within.

Reward: 1x Foci Transmuter.

Orion leaned forward, his analytical mind immediately locking onto the unfamiliar terminology. ”A Foci Transmuter? Explain.”

”It is essentially an aesthetic and structural catalyst for magical foci,” Sparkle’s voice carried a rare, genuinely impressed tone. ”You know how wizards are obsessed with rigid wooden sticks? The Foci Transmuter permanently alters the physical matrix of a single, chosen wand, allowing you to freely shift its outward form at will without degrading its core resonance, length calculations, or magical output.”

The screen displayed a schematic of a wand morphing into a torc, then into an engraved bracelet, then a signet ring.

”Once you apply this single-use item to a wand,” Sparkle continued, ”that specific focus gains localized shape-shifting properties. You can command it to become an oaken staff, a sleek walking cane, an intricate hairpin, or a simple silver ring. If it’s shaped like a ring, you wear it on your finger, completely invisible as an offensive weapon to magical sensors and Auror sweeps. But the moment you channel intent, the magic discharges directly through the ring as if you were swinging the full wand.”

Orion’s indigo eyes lit up with intense, cold appreciation.

”A concealed, wearable focus,” Orion breathed. ”An untraceable second wand.”

”Exactly. However, keep in mind: the Transmuter is a single-use consumable,” Sparkle cautioned. ”Once bound to a wand, it cannot be transferred to another. You can change that one wand’s shape as many times as you like, but you can’t swap it to your school wand later.”

”I wouldn’t dream of using it on my school wand,” Orion smiled, tapping his fingers together. ”My Hawthorn wand will remain in its standard, visible state. The world needs to see Orion Malfoy holding a respectable, textbook twelve-inch wand. The Blackthorn, however...”

He pictured the dark, thorny wood resting in his Inventory.

”...the Blackthorn will become an unassuming piece of jewelry. A hidden, rapid-response trump card resting on my finger. Perfect.”

He decided to table the physical transmutation process for later, closing the interface and settling into his bed.

The quiet days of January slipped past with a tranquil, disciplined momentum.

Living in Malfoy Manor while his Reflection Clone managed the dreary, snow-swept routine of Hogwarts was proving to be the most productive strategic decision Orion had ever made.

Every night, the clone stepped through the Vanishing Cabinet, downloaded the day’s academic lectures and the latest gossip from the common room, and stepped back into the castle the following morning. Narcissa continued her role as early-warning radar, seamlessly tracking Lucius’s erratic Ministry schedule and granting Orion total, uninhibited freedom of the estate.

With his days entirely his own, Orion spent hours locked in his study, devouring The Grimoire of Old Magick.

He had progressed far beyond the foundational philosophy of living magic and the mechanics of foci. He was now deeply entrenched in the fifth Chapter: The Morphology of Spells.

Modern magical academia, championed by institutions like the Department of Mysteries and advanced theoretical journals, held a firm, proud belief in the concept of ”Spell Creation.” Wizards like Severus Snape, Albus Dumbledore, and ancient pioneers were revered as creators—geniuses who pulled entirely new magical constructs from the void through mathematical arithmancy and will.

Merlin, predictably, completely ridiculed the premise.

According to the archmage, mortals were incapable of creating magic, just as a sailor was incapable of creating the ocean.

”Wizards do not birth spells,” Merlin wrote in sharp, decisive strokes. ”They explore. What the foolish call ’creation’ is merely discovery. Every permutation of magical reality, every phenomenon, every curse and blessing, already exists within the eternal lexicon of the living ether. A wizard does not write the law; he merely stumbles across the correct grammatical phrasing to unlock it.”

Merlin explained that spellcraft was fundamentally an act of linguistic exploration.

A pioneer took an existing, understood phrase—a known dialect like Incendio—and began experimenting with its syntax. They altered the kinetic motion, adjusted the vocal cadence, substituted runic variables, and observed how the living magic responded.

Through generations of trial and error, someone took the basic, domestic concept of heat and combustion found in Incendio, pushed the linguistic boundaries further into the dark, and accidentally discovered Fiendfyre.

However, Merlin’s notes on Fiendfyre contained a revelation that made Orion stop reading entirely.

”The cursed flame is notoriously wild,” Merlin noted with visible disdain on the page. ”It consumes its master, takes the shape of beasts, and resists containment. The modern fool claims this is the inherent nature of dark magic. I say it is the mark of incomplete scholarship.”

Merlin posited that the wizard who originally discovered Fiendfyre had simply stopped halfway through the sentence.

They had uncovered the command to awaken a ravenous, primordial, soul-consuming inferno, but they had botched or abandoned the secondary grammatical clause required to bind its obedience. They had discovered the combustion, but failed to map the reins.

Merlin argued that somewhere out in the infinite lexicon of magic, there existed a complete, fully articulated incantation—a refined discovery—that would produce a flame vastly more destructive than Fiendfyre, yet one that would sit completely placid and obedient in the caster’s palm like a trained hound.

”The magic is not broken,” the text concluded. ”The explorer was merely impatient.”

Orion stared down at the illuminated parchment, his analytical mind buzzing with the staggering implications.

It was a magnificent philosophy. It framed magic not as an arbitrary collection of Latin words, but as an ancient, unmapped continent waiting to be charted.

And yet... as intoxicating as the prospect of ”spell discovery” was, Orion felt a cold, deep-seated hesitation settle in his chest.

He closed the grimoire, resting his hands flat against the dragon-leather cover.

There is a reason only the Department of Mysteries dabbles in this, Orion reasoned silently. And there is a reason they lock themselves behind time-dilation wards and three-foot-thick cursed stone walls.

Experimenting with the syntax of living magic was not like debugging code on a computer. If a programmer made a syntax error, the compiler threw an error message.

If a wizard made a syntax error while trying to discover a new branch of magic... the reality in his immediate vicinity collapsed. The magic misunderstood the command. It exploded. It turned his blood into boiling lead, warped his spatial coordinates, or erased his existence from the timeline.

Orion’s thoughts drifted unbidden to a girl with dirty-blonde hair, mismatched boots, and a quiet, unshakeable grief.

Pandora Lovegood.

Luna’s mother had been a brilliant, extraordinary witch who loved to experiment with obscure, unmapped magic. And one afternoon, a single botched variable in an experimental spell had detonated in front of her nine-year-old daughter, ending her life in a flash of violent, uncontainable light.

Orion leaned back in his chair, exhaling slowly into the quiet of his room.

He was ambitious. He was ruthless. He possessed the intellect of an engineer and the arsenal of a walking calamity.

But he was not arrogant enough to believe he was immune to the consequences of playing with live cosmic wires.

”Fascinating theory, Merlin,” Orion whispered softly to the ancient tome on his desk. ”Truly breathtaking. But I think I shall stick to utilizing the spells that other, significantly braver idiots have already died to map out.”

He wasn’t going to blow himself up for the sake of an academic footnote. He had a bank to rob, a dragon to tame, and a war to win.
