The Delicate Darling with Her Rough Man

Chapter 253: Chapter 252: Welcome Banquet

Leng Yuan didn’t care, but Gu Jiaojiao couldn’t just let the woman curse them for no reason.

She turned to Jin Meifeng with a smile, her tone light.

”Don’t you worry. Our lives are only going to get better from now on.”

”Has no one ever told you? Sweet Girl and Xiao Yang’s faces! They’re the kind that are full of good fortune. They’re destined for great things. Our family has had it rough, it’s true, but who knows? Maybe after adopting them, our luck will turn right around!”

Jin Meifeng watched Gu Jiaojiao walk away with that smile on her face, seething with rage.

Her face was a mask of indignation.

”What’s there to be so smug about? Acting like you’ve won the lottery.”

”Those two jinxes who got their own parents killed? Good luck? More like bad luck, I’d say.”

”This old lady will be watching. Let’s just see what kind of life you can make for yourselves.”

Perhaps Gu Jiaojiao’s words had provoked her, because a fighting spirit ignited in Jin Meifeng.

She stopped sitting in the snow, stood up, brushed herself off, and went back to her room.

’It’s not like I have a choice!’

’My butt is freezing.’

Besides, no one was paying her any attention. It was useless to sit there wailing.

Jin Meifeng went back into her room without any further trouble, but her final words drifted into Sweet Girl and Xiao Yang’s hearts.

The children’s happy little faces immediately fell.

They were used to being cursed like that since they were little, but they couldn’t help but feel hurt.

They even began to doubt themselves. ’Are we really jinxes?’

Just as the two were spiraling into despair, Gu Jiaojiao’s gentle voice spoke up.

”A person’s destiny isn’t decided by a few words from someone else.”

”Since she says you’re no good, you should strive to live a good life and show her just how wrong she is.”

Sweet Girl and Xiao Yang were still filled with self-doubt.

”Can we really do that, Sister?”

’How could burdens like us ever have a good life!’

Gu Jiaojiao laughed.

”Even if you don’t believe in yourselves, don’t you believe in me?”

Sweet Girl was instantly put at ease. She idolized Gu Jiaojiao and believed her words unconditionally.

’If Sister says I can, then I definitely can.’

Xiao Yang didn’t speak. His dark eyes flickered for a moment before returning to their usual calm.

The four of them arrived home.

Gu Jiaojiao gave Sweet Girl and Xiao Yang the other empty main room in the house.

This was where she usually bathed.

It was quite clean inside. Gu Jiaojiao tidied it up a bit to make it livable.

But this room didn’t have a heated brick bed, only a large bedstead. The family had a stove, but no coal.

The two children would have to bundle up with thick blankets, or they wouldn’t be able to stand the cold.

As she laid out the bedding, Gu Jiaojiao felt it. It was reasonably thick.

It wasn’t the coldest time of the year yet. When that time came, it would be impossible for Sweet Girl and Xiao Yang to stay in this room without a stove.

’Looks like I’ll have to figure out a way to buy some coal.’

After she finished tidying the room, the sky had already grown dark.

Leng Yuan made dinner: millet porridge and corn-and-wheat-flour flatbreads. He had added brown sugar and red dates, making it very fragrant and sweet.

There was also pickled cabbage stewed with meat and a small dish of stir-fried wild pheasant.

He had followed Gu Jiaojiao’s instructions, and the flavor was excellent.

Sweet Girl and Xiao Yang exchanged a look.

They hadn’t expected such a lavish dinner.

They were almost afraid to eat.

Refined grains and meat, too... This was too... extravagant!

The two decided they would eat very little.

’Just porridge and flatbread, no meat.’

Gu Jiaojiao set out the dishes. Once everyone was seated, she began with a smile.

”Today is a special day. It’s the day Sweet Girl and Xiao Yang came to join us.”

”From now on, Leng Yuan will be your big brother, and I’ll still be your big sister.”

”You can call us whatever you like. We aren’t formal about things like that in this family.”

”This meal is to specially welcome Sweet Girl and Xiao Yang to our little family. Welcome.”

Gu Jiaojiao’s cheerful tone was infectious. Sweet Girl and Xiao Yang grinned, revealing their white teeth. Even Comrade Leng Yuan, who rarely let his emotions show, did her the favor of twitching his lips into a slight smile.

Gu Jiaojiao felt that was already a huge accomplishment.

’You couldn’t ask for too much from Comrade Leng Yuan.’
