Blood and Mud

Chapter 43: Chapter 43

The wound on my thigh throbbed in time with my pulse, sickening and rhythmic. Blood had dried into the makeshift bandage, tugging at torn flesh every time I bent my knee. But that pain was background noise next to the hunger. This wasn’t a cramp anymore — it was a cold, hollow pull, like something had reached straight into the Ember and started taking whatever heat it could find. I had exactly one thing left to feed it: a half-ration of hardtack, sitting like a stone at the bottom of my pouch.

I moved down the sloping tunnel, left hand trailing the jagged wall. The air started to change — the thick, acidic stench of the insects behind me giving way to dry dust, mineral salt, an old, stagnant foulness underneath it all. The smell of undisturbed tombs. Of marrow gone dry.

The sound reached me before anything else did.

It wasn’t the frantic skitter of the spiders, and it wasn’t the heavy drag of the centipede’s legs either. This had rhythm to it. Rigid. Metallic. Disciplined.

Clack. Clack. Clack.

Sun-bleached bone striking hardened leather straps. Old steel clashing in lockstep. Marching.

I stopped dead. Exhaustion had settled in deep, but instinct shoved it aside — I gripped the hilt with both hands, dropped low, and pushed a surge of heat into the metal. The runes hissed and threw a hard arc of blue sparks down the throat of the tunnel.

The path ahead wasn’t clear. And whatever waited in the shadows wasn’t an animal.

A phalanx blocked the corridor, fifteen paces off. Human remains — skeletons held together by blackened ligaments and magic gone rancid with centuries of rot, lined up razor-straight. Scraps of rusted iron breastplate hung off them, boiled leather gone green with damp.

The front rank had locked round shields edge to edge, a wall of rotted wood and pitted iron solid enough to look impenetrable. Above the rim, a thicket of spearheads pointed straight at my throat, and behind that — more of them, bearded axes, chipped broadswords, hollow sockets catching the blue light off my blade.

Something else moved in the dark past the phalanx — a sound I knew and hated knowing. The creak of yew pulled to full draw. Bows.

Swoosh. Swoosh. Swoosh.

Three arrows came out of the black with a lethal hiss.

I threw myself sideways, behind the trunk of a fallen stalagmite. Two shattered against the limestone, exploding into splinters. The third caught my shoulder, tore a strip of leather off my ruined tunic.

These weren’t mindless things running on instinct. They fought like real infantry — they knew covering fire, held their line without a gap in it.

The marching started again. The phalanx was advancing, pushing me into a dead-end corner. Spears struck the stalagmite in unison, chipping stone loose. They closed the distance with purpose, methodical about it, eating up whatever room I had left to move.

I squeezed the hilt until my knuckles went white. One instinct left, screaming louder than the rest: break the line.

I pushed off and sprinted, ignoring the bandage tearing loose with every stride. No dodging the wall, no hunting for a gap that wasn’t there. I went straight through the center, all my weight behind it.

Hit like a ram through a rotten gate. The wood and pitted iron buckled on impact. Two skeletons in the front rank went down hard, ribs shattering, shields flying off into the dark — a jagged hole punched clean through the formation.

I didn’t give them a fraction of a second to close it.

One swing took the shafts off three spears at once, ash wood snapping like kindling, and the blade bit into a spearman’s spine before I’d even finished the motion. The charge went into it without me thinking twice.

A flash of blue lit the tunnel, threw shadows dancing up the walls. The current didn’t find nerve or flesh to burn — it went straight for whatever magic was holding the bones together instead. The thing shuddered once, then blew apart into a cloud of white dust and sparks, collapsing into a heap that didn’t move again.

The second rank was already on me. A bearded axe came down at my skull, swung by something with no jaw left to snarl with. I got the crossguard up in time. Whatever was driving that swing didn’t come from muscle — but the motion itself was stiff, mechanical, nothing like how something alive moves.

I used that stiffness against it. Knocked the axe down and out of line, pivoted on my heel, drove a kick straight into its knee. The joint went with a dry crack. It tipped forward and I brought the sword down before it finished falling — took the head clean off. The skull rolled away into the mud.

Another volley rained down out of the dark. A rust-eaten arrowhead found my lowered guard and buried itself in my arm.

The pain hit like a white flash, knocked the air clean out of me. I snarled, snapped the rotten shaft off with one strike of my hand — left the head buried rather than risk pulling it and bleeding out worse. Whatever breath I had left, rage filled the space where it used to be.

I shifted the sword to one hand, grabbed the skull off the ground with the other, and threw it hard into the black, aiming toward the bowstrings by sound alone. Something back there cracked — ribs, by the noise of it. The arrows stopped coming.

I pushed into the gap while it was still open. The sword moved almost on its own, a scythe of electricity chewing through rust and bone. I ducked under wide, ancient broadsword swings, knocked pikes wide with the pommel, used the tunnel’s crooked walls to keep them from ever getting all the way around me.

One skeleton blocked the way entirely on its own — wrapped head to foot in blackened iron plate, wielding a two-handed greatsword like it weighed nothing at all. Some tribal champion, maybe. A warlord nobody remembered by name anymore. It came at me already swinging, one heavy cross-cut after another.

I caught the first strike head-on and felt it all the way up into my shoulders — my arms went numb with it. Stepped back, let the recoil carry into deflecting the second cut, then came up underneath with my own. The blade found the one gap in the breastplate, right where the joint was weakest.

I poured everything left in the Ember into the blade — every last scrap of heat and charge it could hold.

It went off like a furnace catching all at once. The iron plate heated from the inside, glowed white, and whatever bones were left in there turned to slag before I even registered the light. The blast threw me backward. I hit the bone dust covering the floor and went down hard, flat on my back.

I stayed down a second. Silence came back into the dark, nothing in it but my own breathing, wet and ragged, scraping the back of my throat. The whole stretch of tunnel around me was nothing but old weapons, broken shields, and mounds of white dust that used to be bone.

No more enemies standing.

I used the sword to push myself up. My arms wouldn’t stop shaking — nothing left to draw on. Vision going soft at the edges, muscles like they’d been packed with lead. I dug the last half-ration of hardtack out of the pouch with a shaking hand and swallowed it nearly whole, chased it with the last of the water in my canteen. Wasn’t food, not really. Just enough to keep my heart going a while longer.

I couldn’t stop in that tunnel. Stopping meant dying there.

I limped forward, clutching my bleeding arm to my chest.

Several hundred paces on through the black, the air shifted again — warmer now, almost stifling. Then a glow, faint and red, somewhere ahead. Nothing like the sick green of the fungus back at the lake.

I came through a jagged stone archway into a wide, circular chamber. The light was coming off a rough-hewn stone brazier dead center of the room — red embers, magical by the look of them, burning steady with no wood or coal feeding them that I could see.

The whole place had been turned into a refuge. A sick, desperate one. Every wall was covered in crude, frantic engravings — runes and drawings scratched into the rock in something that had once been blood, gone black and hard with age now. At the far end, cross-legged on a mat of rotted animal skins, sat a skeleton. Whole. Undisturbed.

No armor on it. Just the ragged remains of a shaman’s robe, faded to threads, hanging off its shoulder bones. Around its neck: a necklace built from the skulls of small animals, threaded through with falcon feathers gone to gray dust. Its hands sat folded in its lap, holding a thick book bound in something that had once been skin, hardened now to leather.

I came closer slow, muscles wound tight enough to cramp, sword still in my fist. It didn’t react. Whatever magic kept those soldiers moving out in the tunnel wasn’t in this one. This body was just dead. Had been for decades. Maybe longer.

I sheathed the sword and knelt in front of it. The cover was cracked and dry with age, but the pages inside had held up — stiff parchment, still intact. I opened it.

The glyphs were Coalition, hard and angular, but the structure underneath was close enough to old Imperial script that I could follow it. Not through any effort. Nothing tactical came in to save me, no leftover knowledge from the life before this one. It was just there — instinct and memory doing the reading on their own, working through the dark ink line by line.

A journal. The private diary of a Shaman from the Falcon Tribe.

I traced the pages with fingers crusted in blood and limestone dust. The writing was full of heresy, visions, the slow grind of exile. He’d gone places he wasn’t supposed to go, seen things he wasn’t supposed to see — the Imperial Legions on the march, the mechanics of the Dormant Bud, the evolved flesh underneath it all. And out of everything he’d seen, he’d landed on something the rest of the Coalition refused to touch, blind as they were with pride and mud-worship: the tribes were losing. Not by chance. Not by bad luck.

By biology.

”The mud listens. The mud obeys. But the mud dries, eventually,” one line read, the quill dug in so hard it had nearly torn through the page. ”Their fire — that cursed Ember burning in their organs — never goes out. My brothers are blind. The Coalition will be ground down under steel and burning flesh. We won’t survive this. Not unless we take their secret for ourselves.”

I turned the page. Dust lifted off it, hung there in the still air.

What followed was the record of his experiments — meticulous, and completely mad. He’d tried to recreate the Ember’s power without the bloodline that was supposed to make it possible. Tried the unthinkable: forging an Ancient Rune from nothing, something raw enough to force into a warrior and mimic what the Empire had by birth. His own people found out. The Elder Shamans — horrified by what he’d done, disgusted by the sacrilege of it — branded him, broke his staff, cast him out for good.

Hunted by his own people after that, he’d run. Down into the cold dark of the earth, into this maze of caverns that never seemed to end.

The last page was barely handwriting anymore — thin, desperate scratches. ”I have bent the fallen of the old wars to my will,” it read. ”My bone soldiers buy me the time I need. They don’t hunger. They don’t breathe. They don’t break, not from fear, not from anything. They are exactly the vanguard my research requires. I will not stop. I will go on vivisecting the soul itself until I have it — the Rune of Rebirth. The Falcon Tribe will fly again, higher than the ashes the Empire leaves behind...”

I closed the journal with a sharp snap, jaw clenched.

It left a grim taste in my mouth. Those skeletons back in the corridor, the ones that had nearly bled me out — they weren’t some random horror the damp and the rock had cooked up. They were a bodyguard. Built by a broken, exiled man to keep him safe while he slowly starved to death down here, alone. A whole army trapped in the dark right along with him.

I pushed the journal into the empty pouch, the space my rations used to take up. Knowledge counted as a weapon down here, and right now it was close to the only one I had left.

I looked around. Past the reach of the brazier’s light, a staircase cut straight into the living rock dropped away into deeper dark, and I couldn’t see where it ended.

My legs just gave out. I went down to my knees, caught myself on my hands, let my forehead rest against the cold stone. Insect bites, bruises, an arrow wound I hadn’t properly dealt with — and the Ember was down to a dying cinder, nothing left in the pouch to feed it.

But he hadn’t starved in this room by accident. This wasn’t where the real work happened. His actual lab, wherever he’d tested that Ancient Rune of his, had to be somewhere past that staircase.

And whatever he’d left guarding it wouldn’t be a handful of bone soldiers. It’d be worse. It had to be.

My mouth was too dry to do more than click my tongue against it. I turned, settled my back against the bare rock, right next to the rotted pelts holding up the Shaman’s body. The quiet in here was the quiet of a grave. I shut my eyes and tried to steal an hour of sleep, feverish as it probably would be.
