Blood and Mud

Chapter 40: Chapter 40

Yuni’s blood was still warm on my face.

The dual-wielding barbarian ripped his axes from my lieutenant’s chest, his own chest heaving as his feral eyes locked onto mine. He stepped over Yuni’s body, raising his weapons. The shadow of the iron blades blocked out the grey light of the swamp.

As the right axe descended toward my neck in a lethal, blinding arc, pure, unfiltered survival instinct took over. I raised the bastard sword horizontally.

Clang.

The impact should have shattered my wrists. It should have driven me to my knees and buried the dark steel into my own collarbone.

Instead, something inside my chest broke.

The Dormant Bud did not flare. It detonated.

The iron cage the magic had built to suppress my adolescent biology—shattered under the sheer terror of impending death. The agonizing pressure in my marrow vanished. In its place, a scalding, white-hot torrent of thermal and kinetic energy flooded my veins.

I pushed upward.

The barbarian’s eyes widened in sudden confusion. He pressed his weight down on the locked blades, expecting the scrawny fourteen-year-old girl to collapse into the mud. I didn’t yield a single inch. The explosive surge of the Swelled Bud saturated my muscles, hyper-oxygenating my blood and granting me the raw, explosive physical strength I had been lacking.

We were physically equal. But he was a berserker, and I was an Imperial foot soldier.

I slid my left hand down to the diamond-shaped pommel of my bastard sword. Applying the exact leverage Miklas had drilled into me, I violently twisted the blade, breaking our lock and throwing his right axe wide. The Ancient Runes of the Sky crackled, discharging a vicious arc of static electricity directly into the iron scales of his bracer.

His arm spasmed, dropping down. His guard was broken.

I didn’t hesitate. I stepped inside his reach, pivoted on my heel to generate maximum torque, and drove the bastard sword through the center of his chest. The dark steel pierced his sternum, the static charge frying his nervous system before he could even draw a breath to scream.

I ripped the blade free. He fell backward into the mud, dead before his shoulders hit the ground.

I stood over him, my breath coming in ragged, scalding gasps. The furnace in my chest was burning hotter than it ever had. But the battle was not over. The crescent of Coalition polearms was still shrinking, butchering the remnants of the 5th Cohort. Kaelen was on his knees, swinging his heavy shield with one arm. Alysia was nowhere to be seen.

Then, a sound cut through the deafening roar of the melee.

It was a high, piercing brass note.

The ground began to shake, vibrating with a mechanical, terrifying intensity that dwarfed the barbarian war drums. From the fog rolling across our exposed right flank, a wall of armored warhorses erupted.

The Imperial heavy cavalry smashed into the side of the encircling barbarians. It was an absolute massacre. Long lances shattered iron scales and flesh with sickening ease. Thousands of tons of iron-clad warhorses trampled the Coalition warriors into the toxic mud, entirely breaking the crescent that had trapped us.

The pressure simply vanished. The surviving barbarians routed, abandoning their dead and fleeing back toward the petrified tree line.

I lowered my sword. I had survived.

Then, the true agony began.

The Swelled Bud had unlocked my biology, and the Ember was not going to wait for a safe environment to optimize its vessel.

A blinding, tearing pain ripped through my spine. My knees buckled. I dropped the bastard sword, clutching my stomach as my entire skeleton felt like it was being stretched on a medieval rack. My muscles cramped violently, tearing and rebuilding themselves at an impossible, accelerated rate. The magic was forcing my body through six years of physical maturation in a matter of seconds.

I fell into the mud beside Yuni. The screaming of the battlefield faded into a dull, distant hum. My vision swam with black spots, the agonizing heat of the evolution burning away my consciousness until there was absolutely nothing left but the dark.

The canvas ceiling of the medical tent swam into focus.

I breathed in. My ribs didn’t hurt. That was the first wrong thing. I pushed up onto my left hand to sit — and my palm came down past the edge of the cot, hitting nothing.

I went still. Looked down.

My arm was too long.

I shoved the wool blankets off and stood. Bare feet into cold mud. The world sat at the wrong height, and my balance had moved somewhere I hadn’t put it. I held up my hands. Same bruises, same little scars, but the fingers ran longer now and the knuckles had thickened. That brittle, half-finished fourteen-year-old frame was just gone. Broad shoulders. Muscle packed dense and coiled tight. And the pressure that had been grinding away in my marrow for days — vanished, in its place a deep reservoir of heat thrumming behind my sternum.

The Swelled Bud. It was done.

I touched my forehead, and panic went through me like a cold nail.

Steady. I reached for the anchor. The other life — the mechanized infantry, the concrete cities, the doctrine I’d read until the pages went soft.

I found smoke.

I shut my eyes and tried to pull up the face I’d seen in the mirror before Oakhaven burned and spat me back out. Blank. I went for my old name and it ran out through my fingers like dry sand. All that stockpiled statistics and combat geometry, the thing I’d leaned on for every decision since I woke up in this world — dissolving. Just blurred shapes now, meaning nothing.

I wasn’t a veteran commander stuffed into a child’s body anymore.

I was just Elvit.

The tent flap swung back. Miklas came through, ducking the low canvas, Myra close behind him.

He stopped short. Those amber eyes went up my new height and settled on the adult set of my shoulders. Whatever exhaustion was carved into his scarred face rearranged itself into something grimmer and quieter.

”You survived the threshold,” he said.

”Yuni.” My voice came out deeper. Rougher. I barely recognized it.

Miklas’s jaw set. ”Burned with the rest of the vanguard. He died buying you the seconds you needed to evolve.”

The grief landed right then, all at once. Not a tally of a lost asset. A cold stone dropping into my gut and staying there. Yuni — the pragmatic bastard who never pretended to care about anything but coin — had taken an axe through the chest for me.

Myra came forward, eyes down on the muddy floor. She didn’t offer me anything soft or useless. She just stood close, and that was enough.

”The Butcher broke the encirclement.” Miklas went on, and there was nothing like victory in it. ”Heavy cavalry drove the Coalition back into the deeper swamps. The field’s ours.”

”Casualties?”

”Forty thousand dead.” Flat. Nothing behind it.

The number sat in the damp air between us. Forty thousand Imperial soldiers left lying in the mud. It filled the whole tent until there wasn’t room to breathe around it.

”Get dressed, Lieutenant.” He was already turning for the flap. ”Commander wants the surviving officers at the pavilion.”

Three days later the rain finally quit, and left behind a heavy, poisonous humidity that hung over the encampment like a wet blanket nobody could lift.

I stood at the edge of the great map table in the command pavilion, in a new leather uniform cut properly to fit me. The bastard sword across my back sat differently now. It wasn’t a heavy, desperate thing I had to fight to hold up. It just felt like more arm.

Commander Erula held the head of the table, crimson cloak spotless. General Kaelus leaned his weight on his greatsword across from her. Next to him stood a woman I placed by the dark green insignia on her armor — Commander of the 5th, the ones who’d bled through the last battle.

”The Coalition has retreated to their primary strongholds in the deep marsh.” Erula’s voice cut clean through the wet air. She set a carved marker down deep in enemy ground. ”They’re trying to consolidate the surviving warbands under what Shamans they have left. We won’t give them the time.”

Those blazing red eyes swept the room.

”General Kaelus. Your heavy infantry advances straight against the center. You hold, and you absorb their counter-attack. You’re the anvil.”

He grunted. Scarred face gave up nothing.

Erula pushed two more markers out to the edges of the swamp, hard, like she was shoving them there. ”The 7th sweeps the left flank and wipes out what’s left of the Turtle Tribe’s encampments. The 5th takes the right and burns the Snake Tribe out of the roots. Flanks collapse, and then we crush the center.”

I looked at the map.

A few days ago I’d have been halfway through the marching angles already — predicting where the supply lines would fail, chewing on the odds of an ambush until the numbers came out clean.

Now I just looked at the terrain. Felt the Ember burning steady and violent under my ribs, the cold leather of the hilt against my palm. Nothing left to overthink.

Just mud, steel, and the enemy.
