Percy Jackson: The Firstborn

Chapter 85: Chapter 85: Whispers from Tartarus

Depths of Tartarus

”Zeus is starting to lose his patience.”

The only thing you could see was darkness. You would not be able to see beyond your own nose, surrounded by a constant unpleasant sensation that seemed to be radiating from one of the two men holding a conversation.

”And Poseidon?”

”He is preparing for a possible war against Zeus. He has completely sealed Atlantis, and any god who crosses his domains without his permission could be attacked by the king of the sea,” answered the voice coming from a man.

The only thing you could see of him was a faint red glow in his eyes, dimmed by something you would not be able to identify.

”Good,” the other man said.

You could swear you saw an unpleasant smile through his distorted silhouette.

The dark silhouette stretched out what seemed to be one of its arms toward the other man, and in that hand, a helm radiating divine power began to form. The moment the man with red eyes felt the helm’s power, he smiled maniacally, reached for it, and held it close to his face to observe it more carefully.

”Hades can’t be happy about this,” he said, the manic smile still on his face.

”And he isn’t,” the silhouette replied. ”Rather, he is desperately searching for it in Tartarus and has sent many monsters to look for it in the mortal world.”

”Something that will not go unnoticed by Zeus and Poseidon,” added the man with red eyes. ”They will probably think he is searching for the bolt so he can keep it for himself and take control of Olympus.”

”And a war will break out between the three main Olympians, dragging the other gods with them.”

The smile slowly began to grow.

”I like the sound of that, old man.”

”You wanted the throne, didn’t you?” the silhouette asked. ”War is the only way to obtain it.”

As impossible as it seemed, the red-eyed man’s smile widened even more. At any moment, it looked as if his face might split in two.

”It is time for the new generation to rule.”

Silence reigned in the enormous dark room.

Clearly, one of the men seemed to be daydreaming, while the other watched the reaction of the man in front of him impassively. But if he ever knew what the silhouette was currently thinking about him, he would think twice about following his plan, or maybe even warn the gods that a darkness was rising again from Tartarus itself.

”Keep me informed,” he said simply, receiving a nod from the man before disappearing surrounded by light.

”Pfff...”

He smiled.

”Idiot. Do you really think I’ll let you sit on something that belongs to me?” he said to himself. ”When you open the gates of Tartarus, I will recover what is mine and—”

He continued his monologue until a new voice appeared behind him and stopped him.

”Disappointing.”

The silhouette froze in place, unable to move a single muscle because of the fear he felt from the new voice that had taken him by surprise. He didnt felt him behind him....

He turned around to face him, only to see nothing..... Only the same dark abyss as before. But the feeling was different..... The only way to describe it was something pressing down on his own power, making him look like nothing more than a child beside the new being.

He was not even worthy of seeing him.

After all, they were inside the domain of the new being who had joined the conversation.

He could boast that he had almost never felt fear in his life. He had even faced a similar being in the past to the one currently observing him, but he had never felt the same oppression from Uranus.

And that made him reconsider many things.

Had he weakened that much during his years sealed away?

Was his father that weak compared to others of his kind?

Had Uranus never shown his true power?

He felt rage at the last thought.

Let’s not get it wrong. He knew perfectly well that he had been weaker than Uranus. He had taken advantage of his trust to betray him and, with the help of one of his enemies, sent him to Tartarus.

But feeling so weak compared to his father had always filled him with rage and brought out his fury.

”The little god of war is so disappointing,” the unknown being spoke again. ”So manipulable that the only thing he thinks about is the war he wants to cause, not the result or the allies he has.”

He continued.

”A few words he wants to hear and a little mind control with your power, and you have him dancing between your fingers.”

Quickly, a pale hand appeared from the darkness and grabbed the silhouette’s face tightly.

”Do not disappoint me too, Kronos,” the voice said to the now-named Kronos, while from the arm, a man with eyes and hair as black as everything around them slowly began to reveal himself.

”If you do, you will not have a throne to sit on,” he finished, never looking away from Kronos, who did not say a single word.

In moments like this, Kronos knew that allying himself with this monstrous being was a bad idea. But he could not help accepting his help..... After all, in the past, he had also accepted Tartarus’s help to betray and usurp his own father.

And the demand for his help was simple:

The champion of Chaos is mine.

Honestly, Kronos had no problem with that.

He did not care what happened to that dog of Chaos, but that did not mean he would not try to ally with him to take the throne by force. If he had the representative of Chaos herself on his side, everything would be easier.

Even the being currently gripping his face had no problem with that plan, as long as, in the end, the champion of Chaos ended up in his hands.

Little did they both know that Damon was already about to get ahead of them.

Tartarus released Kronos’s face.

Kronos did not move immediately... For a few seconds, he only remained there, motionless, still feeling the pressure of those fingers marked on his skin.

Tartarus began to fade slowly into the darkness, as if he had never truly been there.

”He is a god from the Shinto pantheon,” he finally said, with a calmness that only made Kronos’s rage burn even more. ”The god of order, to be more specific.”

Kronos narrowed his eyes.

”What?”

Tartarus’s smile became barely visible in the darkness.

”The fact that neither you nor Zeus realized that a divine being from another pantheon entered yours without anyone noticing is more disappointing than Ares’s stupidity.”

The primordial finished speaking as a mysterious smile began to appear on his face.

Kronos knew there was much more hidden behind his words, but he also knew Tartarus would not tell him. He would have to find out on his own.

”Shit fuck”, Kronos cursed internally. He hated this feeling, being weak compared to others.

He hated it with all his being.

Being reduced to someone else’s toy.

The only thing keeping his sanity intact was the prophecy.

—The Firstborn shall return to destroy and recover everything he left behind.

The fragment of a prophecy he had heard many years ago returned to his mind, drawing a smile from him..... My return is assured. Even the Fates know it, and that is why they sang that prophecy.

After so many years, the prophecy forgotten by time was coming back to life, along with the name it was given when it was first sung:

The Prophecy of Calamity.

Because it announced the end of one era and the beginning of another.....
