Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Nobody touched the tea cup Yueying had set down. It sat on the table between them like a thing everyone had silently agreed to ignore.

Caelan crossed the room and shut the door. The privacy ward hummed to life, pressing against Ren’s ears and cutting off the hallway noise mid-footstep. The principal turned around and looked at Lin Yueying with a gaze he reserved for very few—careful, devoid of his usual commanding authority.

”Miss Lin. Before you continue.” His voice was gentle, which somehow made it feel much worse. ”What you say next doesn’t stay in this room. It goes into an Alliance record under your name, and the Azure royal house will hear about it within the week. You have one chance to tell me you simply misspoke.”

”I didn’t,” Yueying replied. Her hands were pressed flat on the table, and Ren realized that was the only thing keeping them from trembling. ”I’ve had four months to decide if I’d ever say this. It matters now.”

Ren pulled up a chair across from her. In his chest, Kaia had gone silent—not asleep, not calm, but listening intently to a frequency he couldn’t perceive.

”Start with the easy part,” Ren said. ”What is a Warden?”

Yueying let out a singular, mirthless laugh. ”That’s the hard part. But alright.”

”The Azure archives aren’t a library,” she began. ”Three thousand years of records, and almost none of it is history the way you’d imagine. My family doesn’t keep it to reminisce. They keep it so the same mistakes aren’t repeated by people who weren’t alive to see them the first time.”

She turned her cup slowly on the table, her fingers tracing the rim without ever lifting it to her lips.

”The Alliance has offices that command, offices that administrate, offices that police. Every one of those is listed in the public structure, and Principal Veyr could recite them all.” She glanced at Caelan. ”There’s a fourth kind that isn’t listed anywhere. Azure only knows them because we are old enough to have watched them work.”

”Warden,” Caelan noted.

”It’s not a rank. It’s a job.” Yueying’s voice remained level, which was the most unsettling part—she was clearly keeping it steady by force of will. ”In the old Azure texts, the word isn’t ’commander’ or ’director.’ The closest translation is ’keeper.’ Wardens aren’t assigned to regions, divisions, or fronts. They are assigned to situations.” She paused, letting the weight sink in. ”Specifically, to situations that are currently being held.”

The room grew heavy with silence.

”Held?” Ren asked.

”The archive uses the same word it uses for a dam.”

Okay, Ren thought, his throat suddenly tight. That’s not great.

He reached for the System out of habit—that same reflex that had navigated him through four months of being the outsider—and asked the only question that mattered.

[QUERY: ’WARDEN’ — ALLIANCE OFFICE]

[NO ENTRY IN DATABASE.]

[SCAN HAS NOT ENCOUNTERED THIS DESIGNATION. NO REFERENCE MATERIAL AVAILABLE.]

This was, in its own way, the most alarming development yet. The System had an opinion on everything; it had once offered dry commentary on the anatomy of a dead beetle. It had never, not once, told him it drew a blank.

”There’s a section in the archives,” Yueying continued, ”dedicated to the Valis line. I told you that before.”

”Survival architecture.” Ren remembered the phrase clearly. It had been lodged in the back of his mind for two weeks like a sharp stone in a shoe.

”Yes. Azure doesn’t file bloodlines by wealth or politics. We file them by function—by what a line does to the shape of the world when it’s active.” She held his gaze. ”The Valis file is short. Shorter than a typical Ducal house, shorter than many minor clans. And yet, it is cross-referenced to the Warden office eleven times across two hundred years.”

Ren sat with that information, letting it settle.

”Roderic Voss is in that file,” she went on. ”The patriarch your great-grandfather killed. He gets one line.” She held up a single finger. ”One. It isn’t a story; it’s a footnote. Whatever the archive thinks was happening in those years, a dead Voss patriarch was the least significant part of it.”

”And what does the archive think was happening?”

”It doesn’t say. That’s the entire problem.” Frustration bled through her tone, which was oddly reassuring—it proved there was a human being under that impenetrable Azure composure. ”The Valis section is written with a strange, cautious detachment. Dates, cross-references, movements—and then gaps, Ren. Enormous, deliberate gaps, in a record that is otherwise obsessively detailed.”

Caelan hadn’t moved from his post by the door. ”The entry on Aldric Valis,” he said. ”How does it end?”

Yueying hesitated for a second.

”It doesn’t,” she said softly. ”There’s no death date. No record of disappearance. Nothing in the format the archive uses for a man who stopped existing.” She finally folded her hands tightly in her lap. ”And the entry was still being amended sixty years after he vanished.”

”Amended by whom?” Ren pressed.

”The archive doesn’t name them.” She looked up at him. ”The amendments are all cross-referenced to the Warden office.”

Kaia stirred in his chest—a slow, deep pulse, like a wave rolling beneath a ship. It wasn’t warmth, and it wasn’t a warning. If Ren had to name it, he would have called it grief.

”Now for the part about the Voss,” Yueying said. ”You’re going to hate this, because it’s the only part that makes their behavior make sense.”

”Try me.”

”They don’t hate you.” She said it flatly. ”They’re afraid of you. They’ve been terrified for eighty years. Fear doesn’t trickle down well through three generations, so they’ve rebranded it as hate. Hate is much easier to explain to a twelve-year-old.” Her mouth twisted. ”Ask Kaelen how old he was when they first told him about your family.”

Ren didn’t have to ask. He imagined a boy standing in a cold hall, being handed a grudge like an ancestral sword, and he found he didn’t enjoy the image one bit.

”Whatever Aldric Valis stopped, House Voss was part of it,” Yueying said. ”That’s not a guess. It’s the only shape that fits. The Alliance classified the matter, a Voss patriarch dies, and eighty years later, the Voss don’t want your bloodline investigated—they want it cataloged. They didn’t petition Alliance command for justice; they petitioned for a classification review.” She let that land. ”They aren’t asking the Alliance to punish you, Ren. They’re asking the Alliance to tell them if they should still be scared.”

So the grudge is a cover story, Ren thought. For them, too. They’ve been lying to their own children for eighty years because the truth was far worse than a simple murder.

”So what were they part of?”

”I don’t know.” Yueying said it plainly, without hedging, which he respected. ”And I won’t guess in front of you, because a guess from an Azure royal becomes a rumor with an official seal. What I know is the shape of it. Something happened. Your great-grandfather ended it, and it cost him everything. But the end wasn’t truly the end—because something in that record is still live. Old powers are still watching it, and one of them just sent a keeper to look at a boy who is the first Valis in eighty years to arrive carrying the same thing Aldric carried.”

”There is one more thing,” she said, ”and it’s the only actually useful piece of information I have, so listen properly.”

Ren leaned forward.

”Old houses seal their records. Everyone does it—Azure, Blackthorn, Voss, all of them. But bloodline seals don’t use passwords or physical keys, because passwords can be tortured out of you and keys can be stolen.” She tapped the table. ”They use stages. A bloodline-sealed record opens only for a descendant who has crossed a specific qualitative threshold. Not effort. Not permission. Evolution. The lock doesn’t care who you are; it cares what you are.”

”Tier 2,” Caelan said quietly. His expression had shifted.

”Tier Two,” Yueying agreed. ”World Creation. That is where the door is.”

Ren did the mental math—the only kind he was truly good at. He was a Stage 3 Sprout, three percent away from Seedling, with a hold order on his channels and a Voss heir currently dumping a family fortune into himself. World Creation was two full stages up the ladder, and every single step was measured in years by people with much more time than him.

So my family left me answers, he thought, but locked them behind a door that doesn’t open for Sprouts. Doesn’t even notice Sprouts. He considered it for a moment. Fine. I was climbing anyway. Now I know exactly what’s at the top of the stairs.

He looked up. ”Why are you telling me this?”

Yueying was silent for a long moment.

”Because I haven’t filed a report in eleven days,” she said. ”I was sent here to observe the Valis boy, keep a cautious distance, and report what I saw. And when I do file—because I won’t lie to my own house—I’ll have to tell them what I’ve told you. They will act on it. So I decided that if my family is going to know all of this, you should know it first.” Her chin lifted, and for one brief moment, the Azure princess showed through. ”I sat in the front row, Ren. You put a wall of green light over me and everyone I’ve spent four months learning to like. I’m not repaying that with an objective report and a cautious distance.”

Ren didn’t have a eloquent answer, so he gave her the honest one. ”Thank you.”

”Don’t.” She stood, smoothing her sleeves, her composure sliding back into place like armor. ”Just reach Tier Two before someone decides not to let you.”

She said the last thing at the door, half-turned away, and it was the one thing he couldn’t stop thinking about.

”A Warden isn’t sent to observe. In three thousand years of Azure records, they are never sent to watch something.” Her voice was perfectly steady. ”They are sent when something that was being held has finally started to move.”

Kaia went dead still.

Not warm, not cold. Just still—completely, absolutely, like a held breath. In four months and thirteen days, she had never once done that; not through a corruption attack, not through the Beetle, not through manifesting two laws in front of thousands.

Ren was on his feet before he even realized why.

Caelan opened the door, and beyond it, in the suite’s common room, Vesper Wren was rising slowly from her chair.

Mistwhisker was on the table. The void-cat’s back was arched, every hair standing on end. She was staring at the outer door with her ears flattened, her body already half-phased out of reality, the way she behaved when something approached that she didn’t want to be solid near.

”She doesn’t do that,” Vesper said, her voice cracking. ”She only does that for Tier 2s. Only when they’re—”

The outer door opened.

The woman standing there looked plain. That was the first thing Ren’s brain registered, and the second was that it was a lie—there was nothing plain about her; there was simply nothing to read. She wore a dark travelling coat. No house colors. No Alliance marks, no rank braids, no insignia of any kind, in a continent where everyone who mattered wore their status on their collar.

Ren’s SCAN moved on instinct.

Kaia crushed it.

She hit his intent so hard and so fast that Ren physically flinched, the reflex dying in his chest before it could even reach the woman. In all their time together, through every danger they’d faced, Kaia had never once stopped him from looking at anything.

Beside him, Caelan Veyr’s foundation flickered.

Ren felt it. A Stage 6 cultivator, a man who had stood in a wrecked arena with a corruption blast filling the air without changing his breathing, was now stuttering like a novice missing a step in the dark.

That frightened Ren more than everything Yueying had said put together.

The woman scanned the room—at Vesper, at the terrified cat, at Yueying frozen in the doorway, at Caelan—and then her gaze landed on Ren. Her eyes were a simple, ordinary brown. Her face was the kind you’d forget in a crowded street.

”Ren Valis,” she said. Her voice was equally ordinary. ”Odessa Kyre.”

”You’re three days early,” Caelan said.

”Yes.” She hadn’t looked away from Ren once. ”The Alliance sent me to observe a match, Mr. Valis.”

She stepped inside, and the door closed behind her without a sound.

”That isn’t why I came.”
