Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The Alliance operative keeping tabs on Ren that morning was a woman in plain grey who really struggled to look like she was reading a news slate.

She’d been loitering by his door the moment he woke, she was ten paces behind him in the hallway, and when a knot of Thornwall students stopped cold in the middle of the concourse to gawk at him, she drifted two steps closer without once looking up. Director Kael’s division was keeping their word. Ren decided not to make her life any harder by acknowledging her existence.

’Day one of being a local celebrity,’ he mused, walking past a wall screen that was looping his own face next to the headline: ALLIANCE CONFIRMS RARE DUAL-AFFINITY FOUNDATION. ’So far, it mostly involves people forgetting how to operate their own legs.’

The official statement had gone live overnight, just as Caelan promised. The news feeds had spent the night dissecting it, and because the actual press release was intentionally dry, they filled the gaps with video clips instead—grey frost dissolving a corruption wave, a shimmering green barrier over the front rows, one kid wielding both. Ren had watched thirty seconds and cut the feed. He didn’t need a highlight reel; he’d been there.

Kaia was riding the morning like a breeze, warm and humming in his chest. The System remained silent. Selene’s borrowed office was tucked away on the staff level of the competitors’ wing, a cramped, windowless box, and Ren knocked at exactly 0759.

”Come in.”

She was waiting behind the desk with two slates and a pot of tea, not bothering with any pleasantries. The door hadn’t even fully latched before she fired the first volley.

”How does a Sprout cultivator end up carrying two laws?”

”Uh.” Ren stopped dead in the middle of the room. ”There was a, uh, realm substance—”

”Wrong.” Selene set her cup down with a sharp click. ”You just handed a stranger the blueprint to your foundation in a single sentence. Sit.”

He sat.

”As of this morning, that is the most expensive question on this entire continent,” she said. ”Everyone you encounter for the rest of your life is going to ask it, just wearing a different face—people hoping to recruit you, people desperate to replicate you, and people looking for the precise angle to take you apart. Your mouth is a security risk now, and we’re going to treat it like one.”

’Good morning to you too,’ Ren thought. Out loud, he said, ”Okay. Teach me.”

Something that almost qualified as a smile flickered across her face. ”Three sentences. They handle everything.” She held up one finger. ”’My foundation is documented and monitored by the Alliance. I’d refer you to their statement.’” A second finger. ”’I used what I had to protect people.’” A third. ”’That’s a question for the Alliance.’ Boring, accurate, and empty. Boring is armor, Ren. Now—again.”

She straightened her posture, and her entire presence shifted—chin lifted, voice smoothing into silk. ”Young master Valis. House Meridan would be honored to sponsor a talent of your caliber. Surely a young man can speak for his own future?”

”My future runs through the Alliance and my principal,” Ren replied. ”I’d refer you to them.”

”Better.” The silk evaporated. Her voice dropped, growing tight and tinged with anxiety—the sound of a nervous stranger in a crowded market. ”Is it true? That you can end a life with a touch?”

”It doesn’t work like—” He caught himself one word in.

”Wrong, and you know exactly why.”

”Because I just started explaining the mechanics.” He exhaled a long breath. ”What everyone saw yesterday is what it’s for. I protect people. That’s the only answer.”

”That is the only answer,” Selene agreed. ”Point them at the footage. You spent four months hiding what you are. Now, you’re going to learn how to wear it. One last round.” Her posture relaxed, and for a second, she was just another student in the dining hall, grinning sideways at him. ”So, really? What’s it like? Two laws. Come on, it’s just us.”

Ren thought about it. That one was harder, because it didn’t feel like a trap. It felt like a Tuesday conversation. Which, he realized, was exactly the point—the friendly question is the one that travels the furthest.

”Loud,” he said.

Selene actually laughed—a single, sharp exhale through her nose, which from her was basically a standing ovation. ”Good. Give them a personality instead of data. Humor is a door that closes politely.” She tapped the first slate. ”The traps, so you know them by name: never name the source realm. Never rank the laws—the day someone knows which one is superior is the day they know which side to exploit. And never demonstrate on request, no matter who asks or how nicely they do it. A demonstration you didn’t choose is just an ambush with an audience.”

She slid the slate his way. Forty-one meeting requests, logged since midnight—academies, houses, broadcast networks, and three names flagged in red that she didn’t bother to explain. ”You won’t attend any of these this week. Fame changed your danger math overnight, and you need to get used to the new equation. Yesterday, secrecy was your shield. Today, your visibility is. You’re too high-profile to simply vanish—that’s worth more than any bodyguard, so keep it that way. Be boring in public. Be unpredictable in your movements. Change your routes, vary your times, let the grey-coats do their job, and assume every question you answer is being transcribed by sunset.”

”And the Serpent?”

”They ran the same math you did, just with much worse intentions.” Her voice remained level, which somehow made it sound heavier. ”You stopped being a promising asset yesterday. You became a confirmed one. Confirmed assets get planned for.”

Selene poured more tea, and when she spoke again, her tone had shifted—slower, more deliberate.

”There’s one more subject,” she said. ”And I need you to listen to the whole thing before you react.”

She flipped the second slate around. It was her own personal journal—dated entries, her handwriting, spanning the last four months. She read them aloud in a flat, clinical instructor’s voice.

”Week two: ’Adapts techniques past the instructional model. No wasted structure. Should not be possible at his stage.’” A tap, and the entry changed. ”Month three: ’Integration without loss. Like grafting. No name for this.’” Another tap. ”Month three, later: ’Read a zero-point-one-five-second transition gap mid-fight. Accepted his explanation. Don’t believe it.’”

She set the slate down and looked him in the eye.

”Two nights ago, I wrote the final one. Two laws in one Tier 1 foundation should tear each other apart, Ren. Life and Death aren’t just neighbors—they’re fundamental opposites, and every model I’ve studied says a balance like yours requires an anchor. Something holding the center. I’ve watched your core through three fights now, and there is a steadiness in the middle of you that I cannot account for.” She paused. ”I’ve stopped pretending I can.”

In Ren’s chest, Kaia pulsed—warm, unhurried, and if a feeling could look smug, this one certainly did. He kept his expression carefully neutral and thought, with great sincerity, ’Do not gloat. She can’t hear you, but I’m begging you anyway.’

”I’m not asking,” Selene said.

Ren blinked. ”You’re not?”

”You kept a wall up against me for four months, and I’m on your side. That tells me the wall is necessary.” She leaned back. ”You’ll tell me when you’re ready, or you won’t, and either choice is fine from a student. Neither will be acceptable to the people coming next—Alliance command, the houses, whoever crawls out of that Voss petition. So know exactly where your wall stands before they get here, because they won’t knock first.”

Something in Ren’s shoulders finally dropped, a weight he hadn’t realized he was carrying. The System remained where it always was—quiet, his, the one door in his life that nobody had ever breached. ”Thank you,” he said. ”For not asking.”

”Thank me by staying alive to make that restraint worth it.” She stood up, walked around the desk, and pressed two fingers to his wrist—her own foundation following the touch, a slow pulse of Peak Seedling attention probing his channels from the inside. Her eyes narrowed. ”Your foundation is inflamed. Hairline fractures through the main channels. That’s the final’s bill coming due.”

”I know. I wasn’t going to—”

”You don’t touch the Seedling threshold for two days. Three is safer.” She released his wrist. ”And when you do attempt it—not here, not in a borrowed room in a tournament city—I’ll stand guard. Seedling isn’t a bigger door than Sprout, Ren. It’s a heavier one. Power walks you up to it. Will is what actually opens it. When the weight hits, and it will, don’t fight against it. Stand under it.”

He tucked that away next to the System’s internal countdown, which had warned him of the same thing with far less grace. ”Why are you giving me all of this?”

Selene considered the question longer than she’d considered any of his previous answers.

”I spent your first month trying to catch you in a lie,” she said. ”I plan to spend whatever comes next making sure the truth doesn’t get you killed. It’s better work.” She nodded toward the door. ”Now go collect your title. You’ve kept two thousand people waiting for a day already.”

The arena had been repaired overnight, the new ward lines glowing pale and clean against the old stone, and the crowd for the ceremony was somehow larger than the one for the final.

A broadcaster ambushed him in the staging corridor—slate out, smile plastered on, the question already bubbling from his throat. ”Champion! Everyone wants to know ’How does a Sprout cultivator come to carry two laws?’”

”My foundation is documented and monitored by the Alliance,” Ren said. ”I’d refer you to their statement.”

The man’s smile flickered, and moved on to easier prey. ’Boring is armor,’ Ren thought, walking on. ’She’s right. It’s almost fun.’

The ceremony itself was mercifully short. The tournament director offered a few remarks about the strength of the new generation. The champion’s crest was silver and felt heavier than it looked. When the announcer’s voice rolled his name through the arena—Radiant Cup champion, Ren Valis of Orien—the roar that crashed off the stands hit him in the chest like a soft wave, and in the front row, his team lost their composure: Yuelan was the loudest by a wide margin, Lyra was beaming, Cassian was on his feet, and Iris looked composed and dignified, even if her hands were doing the applauding her face was too ducal to allow.

Then the director confirmed what Caelan had called a formality—Orien Academy, by aggregate standing, was recommended for Sovereign Dawn selection—and the seven of them stopped being just a school class and became, officially, a team bound for somewhere far past Rose Country.

Kaelen was called last, as the finalist.

It was the first time Ren had seen him since the final match. Kaelen crossed the stage with perfect Voss control, accepted his honor with a bow of exactly the right depth—and then, instead of returning to the Orien section, he walked straight to the rows where House Voss was seated. Elder Theron’s hand settled on his shoulder. From that distance, it might have looked like pride. It didn’t look like pride.

Ren found him afterward—or rather, Kaelen found Ren, stepping out of a side corridor while the delegation waited at the far end of the hall, out of earshot but still watching.

”Congratulations,” Kaelen said. It sounded flat and practiced, yet underneath the surface, it was entirely genuine.

”You could have asked for a rematch. You conceded.”

”I lost the match forty seconds before I conceded. The concession was just paperwork.” His jaw tightened. ”They’re taking me to the estate tonight. The family council wants the heir standing in front of them.” His eyes flicked to the retainers pretending not to watch, then snapped back to Ren. ”Everyone has been walking on eggshells around me since yesterday. My grandfather looks at you like a ghost he was warned about. And nobody will tell me why.”

”Kaelen—”

”Whatever my family knows about yours, Valis,” Kaelen said quietly, ”I’m going to find out.”

He walked away down the corridor, spine rigid, stride rhythmic, the finalist’s medal held like something he’d already stopped caring about. At the far end, Elder Theron watched him approach—and for one heartbeat, over his grandson’s shoulder, the old man’s gaze locked with Ren’s. There was no anger in that look. There was something ancient, careful, and terrifyingly close to fear.

Kaia stirred in Ren’s chest, slow and unsettled.

’The feud’s most loyal soldier,’ Ren thought, watching the Voss delegation fold around Kaelen and spirit him away, ’just started asking the questions his family spent forty years avoiding.’

Tonight, in some hall on the Voss estate, they were going to have to decide what to tell him—the story, or the truth.

Ren wasn’t sure which one scared him more.
