Pregnant During An Apocalypse [BL]

Chapter 137: Chapter 137 - A City in Ruin

As they crossed the border into the city, the transformation was immediate and stark.

It felt as if they had stepped into a war zone, where nothing was familiar anymore. The streets, once filled with bustling life, now lay in eerie silence. The lights that remained flickered weakly, casting long, distorted shadows, while distant fires painted the sky with an unsettling red glow. The air was thick, not just with the stench of smoke but with something far worse—the overpowering odor of decay, a reminder of the city’s rapid descent into chaos.

Jai’s fingers tightened around the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white. The weight of the city’s collapse settled on him like a heavy shroud. Beside him, Yunfeng sat frozen, his gaze locked on the window, his face a mask of disbelief and terror.

Everywhere, the remnants of panic were evident. Cars lay abandoned across the streets, their drivers nowhere to be seen. Some were crumpled against lamp posts or wedged halfway into buildings, their doors hanging open as though their occupants had fled in a frantic rush. Bloody handprints were smeared across shattered windows, and in several cases, the windshields were broken as if something had burst violently from within.

On the other side of the road, the scene was far more chaotic.

A desperate crowd had gathered at the edge of the city, pushing against each other, trying to escape whatever horrors had taken root inside.

The highway was clogged with an endless line of vehicles—cars, buses, motorcycles—each honking loudly in a futile attempt to break free.

The air was filled with frantic shouts, screams, and the sound of violence erupting at the barricades.

A woman, hysterical, pounded on a car window, her voice trembling as she pleaded, ”Let my son in! Please, he’s just a child!”

Inside, a man shook his head vigorously, locking the doors, eyes wide with fear.

Another man attempted to scale a barricade, but soldiers shoved him back with brutal force. Then, the sharp crack of gunshots split the air.

Jai flinched, his grip tightening instinctively on the wheel. Yunfeng reacted similarly, his body stiffening.

Somewhere down the road, the deafening roar of an explosion split the night as a car went up in flames, sending a towering column of orange fire into the blackened sky.

”This is worse than I imagined,” Jai muttered under his breath, his voice low with grim realization.

Yunfeng swallowed hard, the words lodged in his throat. His hands, trembling, fumbled with his phone as if seeking a connection to something—anything—normal.

”Jai... this city is already gone,” he said, his voice raw with fear.

Jai didn’t answer right away. His focus was locked on the road ahead, maneuvering the car around abandoned vehicles and debris, his senses heightened. The city looked like it had been through an apocalypse—burnt-out car frames littered the road, flickering street signs danced in the wind, and half-collapsed buildings loomed like forgotten monuments of a lost civilization.

And then, from the corner of his eye, Jai saw movement.

A man, wild-eyed and desperate, bolted onto the road, his limbs flailing in panic. Without warning, he launched himself onto the hood of their car, his fists pounding frantically on the windshield.

”STOP! STOP! LET ME IN!” the man screamed, his voice hoarse with terror.

Jai slammed his foot down on the brake, tires screeching in protest. The car lurched to a stop, but the man clung to the hood, his bloodied hands leaving streaks on the glass.

”Get off, you bastard!” Jai growled, his voice low and dangerous.

But the man was unhinged, his clothes torn to tatters, his face drenched in sweat and smeared with grime. His eyes, wide with fear, locked onto Jai as he continued to scream. ”You have to take me! They’re coming! They’re coming—!”

Then, a series of sharp BANGS echoed from behind them.

Gunshots.

The man’s eyes snapped toward the sound, terror flooding his expression. Before Jai could react, a horde of zombies surged from an alleyway, moving at terrifying speed toward the scene.

”Shit—!” Yunfeng gasped.

The man, still clinging to the car, let out a panicked scream, his hands clawing toward the window. In a split second, the glass shattered with a sickening crack as the man’s desperate fingers broke through.

Jai’s instincts kicked in. He yanked the wheel hard to the right, steering the car off the road and into a ditch.

BAM!

The car crashed violently, its front end plunging into the deep hole, tilting the vehicle dangerously. The man on the hood was thrown off, tumbling onto the pavement with a sickening crunch.

”Jai!” Yunfeng yelped, his seatbelt jerking him back.

Jai’s voice was tight with urgency. ”Are you okay?”

Yunfeng groaned, rubbing his head. ”No! What the hell was that?!”

”That was me saving our asses,” Jai snapped, eyes still trained on the approaching threat.

The man who had tried to hijack their car was now sprawled on the ground, his body twisted unnaturally, but he barely had a moment to react before the horde reached him.

A grotesque, wet crunch echoed through the night as the zombies tore into him.

Jai didn’t look back.

”Move, move, move!” he barked at Yunfeng, flinging open the car door and stepping out.

Yunfeng scrambled to grab the duffel bag from the backseat, his movements hurried and panicked. He barely caught a breath before Jai was already sprinting ahead.

”RUN!” Jai shouted, his voice hard and commanding.

They dashed into the chaotic streets, their path a blur of desperate faces and panicked movements. The air was thick with the sounds of screams, shouts, and the distant snarls of the undead. They weaved through the madness, pushing past people fighting for their lives, trying to ignore the blood-soaked horrors unfolding around them.

A woman, tripping over debris, was pulled down by a man—presumably her husband—as he tried to help her up. But before he could get her back on her feet, a zombie lunged at them both, its teeth sinking into flesh with a sickening crunch.

Yunfeng stumbled as he ran, gasping for air, his mind whirling. When he looked back, he saw the nightmare unfold.

The horde surged forward, crashing into the desperate crowd, devouring anyone in their path. A man in a business suit clung to a soldier, begging for help, only to have his throat ripped out by a zombie from behind. Blood sprayed in all directions, staining the street as screams filled the air.

And then, through the chaos, Yunfeng caught sight of something that made his blood run cold.

The man who had tried to hijack their car was still alive, on the ground, his body twitching in agony as he reached out toward Yunfeng. His lips moved soundlessly, a pitiful plea in his eyes.

But a small figure crouched over him.

A child.

No older than five.

Yunfeng’s legs locked in place. The child tilted his head, sniffing the air as if savoring the scent of blood. Then, with a horrifying suddenness, the child lunged forward and sank his teeth into the man’s throat.

The sickening sound of bone crunching echoed in Yunfeng’s ears.

Blood gushed from the man’s neck as he jerked violently, his mouth gasping for air, hands twitching in the final throes of death.

Yunfeng couldn’t move. His stomach turned as he stared at the child—no, the creature—that had torn through the man’s flesh with horrifying ease.

A child. A child.

Tearing flesh like an animal.

Yunfeng’s breath hitched. The child—lifted its blood-smeared face, empty eyes locking onto his. A shiver crawled up his spine. It sniffed again, then tilted its head, listening. The sounds of chaos, the screams, the dying—it was all background noise compared to the unnatural silence stretching between them.

Then, it moved.

Not like a human.

It didn’t push itself up with its hands or rise to its feet with any of the clumsy motions of a small child. Instead, it crouched lower, its tiny fingers digging into the torn flesh of its latest victim, and in one unnervingly smooth motion, it sprang forward.

Straight for him.

Yunfeng barely had time to react.

”Yunfeng, move!” Jai’s voice snapped through his paralysis.

Yunfeng ran—ran like his life depended on it. Never in his life had he moved this fast. Grabbing Jai’s hand, he pulled him away from the chaos. They ducked behind a bush, peering out.

”It’s bad...” Jai muttered, eyes locked on the soldiers who were now shooting frantically. Most of them had already been bitten, torn apart, devoured.

”Fuck... my dad is going to kill me...” He glanced at Yunfeng, panic creeping into his voice. ”We... we should’ve brought some soldiers with us at least... shit...” His breath quickened as he started to spiral.

Yunfeng grasped his trembling hands. ”Shh... it’s too late to panic. We’ll find Hana, and we’ll leave this city. It’s... it’s safe at your small village in City A.” He met Jai’s gaze intensely. ”We’ll get out of this, okay? Please, don’t lose hope.”

Jai finally calmed, tears welling in his eyes. ”Hmm...”

His gaze drifted back to the chaos in the distance, unblinking.

The world they had known was gone.

The world of humans was over.

This was the world of the undead.
