Chapter 728: Chapter 729: Never Forget Until the End of Time

Cangwu Kingdom.

Inside Miaoyuan Temple.

”You really should learn to look on the bright side of things.” Yun Li stood in the hall, watching Wu Wang whose hands were full of jade tokens and whose expression betrayed his exhaustion,

”Even though the situation has spiraled out of your control, at least the Small Vehicle Buddhist Teachings have made a name for themselves. Places where we haven’t even gone to spread the teachings are now promoting them under the Small Vehicle banner on their own.”

”The Small Vehicle Buddhist Teachings are far and wide known now, and you’ve had no small part in that. Merits and faults cancel out—I think you’ve actually come out ahead.”

Wu Wang was already feeling mentally and physically drained, and the jade tokens in his hands weren’t frontline reports for him to manipulate—they were all questions and confusion from his own Buddhas.

Originally, Runan had let him take charge of this major undertaking in a somewhat unconventional move. Now that things had gone wrong, the already somewhat fractured Buddhist Buddhas naturally had to get to the bottom of it.

Of course, good news wasn’t entirely absent.

Many of the jade tokens in his hands contained extremely harsh wording, questioning whether Wu Wang intended to thoroughly destroy the Buddhist Sect’s reputation.

But no matter how severe the wording, the Buddhist Sect hadn’t sent a single additional person, nor even assigned an overseer.

Obviously, this meant Runan was shielding him from the pressure of the Central Continent Buddhist Sect, so these Buddhas could only send jade tokens and couldn’t directly intervene.

Trust was certainly warm in one’s heart, but it also placed enormous pressure on Wu Wang.

The Honored Buddha trusted him so, yet he actually hadn’t been able to come up with a single good plan to salvage the situation.

He did want the Small Vehicle Buddhist Teachings to spread far and wide—that wasn’t a lie. But not like this.

The Small Vehicle Buddhist Teachings were now almost directly associated with the word ”rebellion.”

Many kingdoms where the Small Vehicle Teachings hadn’t even been implemented yet had already begun boycotting the Buddhist Sect, and many Buddhist temples were being secretly suppressed.

Wu Wang gazed darkly at Yun Li below, who looked thoroughly relaxed and even had the leisure to tease him.

As expected, a plan cooked up by an idiot could only lead people into a massive pit.

Even if he’d done nothing at all and just stayed in the temple sleeping, the situation would likely be much better than it was now.

One idea, and it had managed to ruin things this badly.

Wu Wang didn’t entirely blame Yun Li. He also felt—using an idiot’s idea, he had to bear responsibility himself.

He took a deep breath and spoke as calmly as he could:

”You make a great point. Can you stop talking now?”

”Of course I can.” Yun Li nodded earnestly, then adopted the air of one holding the world’s fate in his hands and smiled faintly, ”But I have another plan that will definitely turn this dire situation around.”

Yun Li’s voice was quite tempting:

”Fellow Daoist, wouldn’t you like to hear it?”

”No.” Wu Wang couldn’t take it anymore and shot him a cold look, ”You’d better get out of my sight too.”

After falling into that idiot’s massive trap once, if he jumped in again, he might as well be dead.

Yun Li heard this and shook his head helplessly, his tone resigned:

”Sigh... wasted kindness.”

Wu Wang didn’t respond. He really couldn’t even stand to look at this unlucky fool anymore.

As Yun Li’s footsteps receded, Wu Wang put away all the jade tokens into his space ring—he’d thought the Buddhist Buddhas might offer some ideas, but it turned out to be either empty pleasantries or reprimands.

Best not to look at these things in the future. They served no purpose other than souring his mood.

No matter how bad things got, with the Honored Buddha’s support behind him, Wu Wang certainly couldn’t just let it rot.

Wu Wang picked up the jade token that carried news back, staring at the messages inside that made his scalp tingle.

Either the various factions were preparing to suppress the Small Vehicle Buddhist Teachings, or the Small Vehicle Buddhist Teachings were preparing to rebel.

Nobody cared what the Small Vehicle Buddhist Teachings actually said anymore.

The Small Vehicle Buddhist Teachings out in the world could now mean ”I haven’t eaten tomorrow, so I’m going to go rob some food,” or it could mean ”Are kings and nobles born to rule?”

It was an excuse to mess with people you didn’t like, a reason to fight to the death, a moral high ground, a slogan to attract followers.

It was no longer spreading Buddhist teachings or promoting scriptures of truth, goodness, and beauty.

Under these circumstances, it no longer helped for Wu Wang to stand before people, chant ”Amitabha” a few times, and urge them to turn back.

Even as the Buddhist Son, he could very well be branded a fake monk if it didn’t serve someone’s interests.

The Buddhist Sect and its temples had lost the ability to guide people back or prevent anything. It seemed there was only a chance after the rage on both sides had burned itself out.

But if they really waited for all that rage to burn out and rivers of blood to flow...

It would be far, far too late by then.

What lay before Wu Wang now was seemingly to reveal his cultivation and use the Buddhist Brahma Voice to quell things.

But even if he truly didn’t care about anything and did that, it would only treat the symptoms, not the disease—completely meaningless, just buying time.

Right now, what Wu Wang had learned at the Buddhist Sect had run dry. As the Buddhist Son, his cultivation talent was naturally top-tier, and he was extremely clever in ordinary matters.

But when facing an unprecedented situation like this... he simply didn’t have enough experience.

Wu Wang was anxious inside, of course, but time wouldn’t slow down because of his anxiety.

If anything—it sped up considerably because of it.

Wu Wang felt as though he’d been in a daze for just a moment, yet it had clearly been daytime, and now when he looked again the moonlight was already bright and clear.

He let out a slow sigh, then turned his gaze toward the entrance.

”As expected of the Buddhist Sect—you really do love the excitement.” Li Yingling’s voice reached Wu Wang’s ears first, then her figure appeared at the entrance. ”A single trial site and it’s already this chaotic. If you’d actually gone ahead with full implementation like you originally planned, it really would have been a massacre and the world thrown into chaos.”

Chen Baiqing followed behind Li Yingling, her gaze fixed on Wu Wang.

Wu Wang stood up upon seeing them. He didn’t shift the blame to Yun Li’s brilliant idea. After bowing in greeting, he spoke:

”Fellow Daoist Li, what brings you here?”

”How could I not come?” Li Yingling scoffed. ”Did you underestimate what you’ve done? Now every immortal sect knows that my master and your Honored Buddha jointly promoted the Small Vehicle Buddhist Teachings.”

”Now that you’ve made such a mess of things, do you think only your Buddhist Sect’s reputation has been ruined and my master’s doesn’t count?”

”Your Buddhist Sect’s reputation is already at rock bottom so you can afford not to care, but my master can’t.”

”If you think I’m just here to get in your way, all you have to do is declare that everything is the Buddhist Sect’s fault and has nothing to do with my master, and I’ll turn right back around and leave.”

Wu Wang didn’t respond, forcing a faint smile onto his face.

Though Li Yingling’s words were reprimands and blame, it was also obvious—compared to the useless finger-pointing from his own Buddhas, she had clearly come to clean up the mess.

Only when interests aligned could there be trust.

Chu Xingchen had entrusted such an important matter to Li Yingling, so at the very least she wasn’t an idiot. Moreover, last time they’d spoken, Li Yingling had left a deep impression on him—she was an opponent not to be trifled with.

Wu Wang pondered for a moment, then a warm smile appeared on his face:

”I trust Fellow Daoist Li didn’t come here just to tease me. Do you perhaps have a solution?”

Li Yingling’s eyes sharpened, and she said coldly:

”Naturally, I’m here to pacify both sides. I’ve brought people specifically to clean up after you.”

”You’ll have to return this favor properly in the future!”

Wu Wang let out a sigh of relief:

”If the matter is resolved, Fellow Daoist Li’s kindness—”

”Never forget until the end of time!”
