Sect Recruitment: I Can See Attribute Entries

Chapter 725: Chapter 726: Giving Ideas

Southern Zhanbu Continent, Cangwu Kingdom.

This capital city neighboring Xuanwu Kingdom was currently in a state of inexplicable fervor.

No one knew what had gotten into a group of monks who should have been chanting their scriptures in temples, actually starting to promote something called Small Vehicle Buddhist teachings.

At first, everyone thought it might just be a normal Buddhist sect activity.

Until this activity exceeded everyone’s expectations.

Suddenly, many Buddhist cultivators arrived throughout Cangwu Kingdom to promote Small Vehicle Buddhist teachings, and all the temples in Cangwu Kingdom began acting together.

Under the banner of Small Vehicle Buddhist teachings saving people and accumulating merit for themselves, they began purchasing land in large quantities, clearing wasteland, and attracting impoverished commoners with extremely low land rents.

All this cleared and contracted land belonged to the Central Province Buddhist sect.

In the fields, stone monuments stood one after another, carved with rough but highly intimidating large characters—Great Thunder Temple.

The Buddhist sect’s actions clearly exceeded normal behavior. Ordinarily, it would be up to other immortal sects seated in Cangwu Kingdom to stop them.

After all, stopping the Buddhist sect’s disorderly expansion served every immortal sect’s interests, not to mention the absurdity of purchased land belonging to the Central Province Buddhist sect.

Many monks with cultivation going around promoting Small Vehicle Buddhist teachings—normally, they’d at least be criticized by other immortal sects for bewitching the common people.

But this situation was abnormally extreme. Every immortal sect seated in Cangwu Kingdom had practically turned a blind eye to the Buddhist sect’s actions, with even criticism and rumors being rare.

Those with experience naturally and keenly caught the abnormal situation—this was a major Buddhist sect operation.

Although no one understood what the Buddhist sect was after, they could still clearly recognize Buddhist cultivators with cultivation.

When the land the Buddhist sect cleared wasn’t enough to continue taking in impoverished tenant farmers, a notice about Land Offering was posted at every temple in Cangwu Kingdom.

Although nominally written as voluntary, with Buddhist cultivators backing each temple, land after offering would also have Buddhist sect protection, and the temples could share in the benefits.

The monks weren’t idiots—they understood perfectly well that this notice was meant for them.

After all, the wealthy households weren’t idiots either. How could they really give up their family fortunes for so-called Land Offering? And even if they did give, how much could they actually give?

Everyone in the world understood one principle—robbing! Definitely gets more than taking!

Each temple began using the name of alms-begging, hoping each wealthy household would donate land—look at how many people outside the gates can’t eat their fill. If they can’t eat, where do we accumulate our merit?

If you don’t let me accumulate merit, then I’ll have to accumulate you as merit.

Killing sends one to hell, but saving a life earns seven levels of pagoda.

Hell has eighteen levels, but if the pagoda beneath your feet is tall enough...

No one knew where this shameless saying came from, but its deterrence was truly formidable.

Especially when the tenant farmers and commoners, who finally had something extra to hope for, finally understood the situation.

Small Vehicle Buddhist teachings are really fucking great—hurry up and spread it across all of Cangwu Kingdom! Hurry up and trade this merit for food that fills the monks’ bellies!

This support naturally gave each temple enough confidence—listen to the people’s voices, you selfish bugs!

Means that sounded better than outright robbery naturally caused enormous upheaval.

The land they robbed was their roots, and the silver they accumulated was their lives.

The noble families who had been resisting Li Junzi instantly threw the Li Junzi matter out of their minds.

Li Junzi was at most digging at their roots, but the Buddhist sect in front of them wanted not just their lives—they were nailing the coffin shut on the spot.

Soon, some noble families refused the Buddhist sect’s open robbery demands and made their meaning very clear—money is more important than my whole family’s lives. You fake monks, if you’ve got the guts, go ahead and ”merit” my whole family.

The Buddhist cultivators naturally wouldn’t actually rush in and ”merit” people. After all, there was a big gap between mouth cannon and actual action.

After all, the Buddhist sect had also accepted the separation of immortals and mortals years ago, not intervening in mortal dynasties. This kind of blatant murder was a clear breach of contract.

The noble families also quickly discovered that the Buddhist cultivators were only talking tough and didn’t actually dare to act.

So a counterattack organized by the noble families swept in.

The Small Vehicle Buddhist teachings promotion, which had been in full swing, came to an abrupt halt. As for the land with the Great Thunder Temple monuments, the noble families didn’t dare to actually destroy those, so the ones they could pick on were only the tenant farmers.

Many tenant farmers began having trouble made for them, being demanded to leave Small Vehicle Buddhist teachings and forbidden from farming Buddhist sect land.

Monks without cultivation naturally couldn’t stop the powerful, deeply-rooted noble families. But monks with cultivation couldn’t do much to the noble families either—all they could do was protect the Buddhist temples from disturbance.

The vigorous Small Vehicle Buddhist teachings promotion was instantly on the verge of extinguishing.

This was the reality Wuwang had to accept.

Miaoyuan Temple.

Wuwang looked at the many impoverished commoners in worn clothes, kneeling across the entire floor, all begging the Buddhist sect to shelter them, at least not to drive them out completely.

Outside the gates, quite a few people in proper clothes held incense and surrounded Miaoyuan Temple—neither speaking nor blocking anyone from coming to burn incense and worship—although no one actually dared to come.

Besides Wuwang at Miaoyuan Temple, there was naturally someone responsible for supervising matters, to judge whether Small Vehicle Buddhist teachings could continue to be promoted. This important task naturally fell to—Yun Li.

Yun Li stood beside Wuwang, looking at the impoverished commoners who nearly filled Miaoyuan Temple on their knees, and sighed lightly:

”It’s just a pity that immortals and mortals are separated. Righteous sects like ours can’t act without restraint like evil cultivators.”

”Fellow Daoist, you’ve seen the situation now. If Small Vehicle Buddhist teachings can’t even be effectively promoted in this small kingdom...”

Yun Li didn’t finish his sentence, but his meaning was extremely clear.

Wuwang’s gaze was calm, but he didn’t answer.

Yun Li looked at Wuwang’s expression, carefully recalled what Master and Eldest Senior Sister had instructed, and figured things were probably about done for.

After all, Wuwang had been here for several days, and within that time he hadn’t come up with a suitable solution.

Yun Li cleared his throat and tentatively spoke according to his tutorial:

”Fellow Daoist, if you have no plan, then I’ll have to report back to the Sect Master.”

Only upon hearing this did Wuwang slowly turn his gaze to Yun Li:

”Fellow Daoist, perhaps you could be a bit more patient.”

Hearing this, Yun Li knew what was what. So he put on a show of sighing, looking helpless:

”How can you say I have no patience? I’m also responsible for this matter. It’s better for this to succeed than to fail—that way I can report back to Master too.”

Wuwang performed a Buddhist greeting at that:

”In that case, fellow Daoist should give it some more time.”

Yun Li sighed helplessly:

”Just looking at your frowning expression tells me you have no solution. It’s a pity for the believers of your Small Vehicle Buddhist teachings... all poor families. They could have lived, but now believing in Small Vehicle Buddhist teachings, they’re the first to truly escape the sea of suffering.”

Hearing this, Wuwang finally couldn’t maintain his composure. A trace of anger flickered in his eyes as he looked toward the people standing outside the temple.

Seeing this, Yun Li finally spoke:

”Fine, let’s just pity these poor families. I do have a method, but the consequences are also obvious. If something goes wrong, I won’t be responsible, my Sect Master won’t be responsible, and I won’t admit in the future that I came up with this idea.”

Wuwang didn’t turn around, only saying coldly:

”What idea?”
