The Mafia King of Philadelphia: From witness to his doted wife

Helena stood at the head of the table with a smile on her face and a plan in her chest, and nobody in that hall could tell which one was real.

She had walked back to Konstantin’s side with her head high. She had let him tuck her hand into the bend of his arm and call her my darling in front of the guests. She had laughed at a joke she did not hear. Now she stood in the warm light of the candles like a wife who had never had a secret in her life.

And behind her eyes, she was counting. Kalisto was asking about the fund. Sienna is angry, but she is standing, and she is not breaking. The Don is smiling. She almost let out a breath. It was going well. It was going exactly as she had planned.

It had taken years.

Years of faking, years of smiling, years of letting a man she hated call her darling and touch her hair. She had played the empty wife so well that he had stopped locking his study.

She had played the forgetful one so well that he began to talk in front of her, careless and bored, even allowing her to travel around the world by herself, the way a man talks in front of a dog or allows it to wander knowing it will come back.

She had listened to all of it. She had kept every word. And when she returned to his side, she had planted a small seed.

She had placed one person, quietly, in the right spot. It was someone the Don trusted without thinking about it, someone who stood in the background, who carried trays and messages and coats. A pair of ears. A pair of lips that spoke only when she wished.

That person had whispered, at the right time, to the right man. It had traveled from mouth to mouth, until it reached Kalisto and his friends.

A little rumor here. A hint there. The Don has found his daughter. The Don is planning to move the project. Not lies. Only the truth, handed over slowly, in small pieces, so that old, greedy men would hear it and grow restless.

Kalisto had come to the dinner because of it. Kalisto had pushed the Don because of it.

And the Don, who hated to be pushed, who would never bend while a rival pulled at his sleeve, had done what he always did. He had made a grand, proud, impossible move.

He gave everything to her daughter. Helena looked at the man beside her. Konstantin was laughing with a guest, his white sleeve gleaming. He looked tall and warm and certain, a man who had just won a battle.

He did not know he had been herded. Soon. The thought was bright and hard and cold, like a coin held in her fist.

When the papers come. The transfer. Pages and pages of them, bound in a thick leather folder, with every house and ship and account written in neat black lines. The lawyers would bring it in the morning. Sienna would sign. And Konstantin would sign beside her, in front of witnesses, proud and generous, so that all the world could see the great Don Ivanou giving his empire to his child.

He would read the first page.

Maybe the second. He would skim the rest, because he had signed a hundred such folders in his life, and because the lawyers were his own, and because he trusted that every word had been put there by someone who feared him.

Helena would be standing at his shoulder. The sweet, obedient wife.

And in the thick folder, between the last two pages, would be one more sheet. It would look the same as the others, with the same paper and the same black ink. It would have been placed there by a quiet hand.

One page. When Konstantin’s pen touched it, everything would change. She knew exactly what was written there.

She had read it over and over, in secret, until the words were burned into her mind. It was short and plain.

The illegal businesses were not in some distant company, in some faraway account. They were houses. Old stone houses on quiet roads. Warehouses by the river, with iron doors and no windows. That was where Konstantin kept his dark work. That was where the men who did not come back were taken, and where the ground was dug at night.

And every one of those buildings, every deed and every key, had once been in her name. Now, with one stroke of his pen, the hidden page would put them back where they belonged.

In his name. Not as a gift, not as a trick, but as the simple, true record of what had happened. The houses were his. The warehouses were his. The crimes done inside them were his.

And Helena Ivanou would be free. No one could hold her to account for a single stone. The law would look at the old papers and see a woman who sold her property to her husband long ago and had nothing to do with it since. It would look at him.

It will not be a trap, she thought. It will be a mirror. She let her eyes move across the room. There, in the shifting light, was her daughter’s white dress.

Sienna stood near the window with Viktor, straight-backed and pale, with the crown shining over her curly hair. She was holding herself so tightly that it almost hurt to look at her. But she was standing. She had stepped on a man’s foot in front of a hundred guests. She had held her ground against Kalisto’s cane.

She is stronger than I was at her age, Helena thought. It made her proud. It made her afraid.

Because after tomorrow, Sienna would be safe. The Ivanou fortune, the old, honest wealth of ships and land, would be hers. Her name on every deed. Nothing in it that could drag her down, and nothing the Don could take away.

And what would be left of Konstantin?

A man with a pile of stained houses. A man whose name was on every crime and every grave, with no empire behind him, no fortune to hide in, and no daughter to hold. His men would drift away. His friends would turn on him like dogs. He would still be dangerous.

But he would be only a man. And a man was easy to fight. Just one more night, Helena thought. She lifted her glass and held it against her lips. She did not drink.

Please, she thought. It was a very quiet prayer, said to no one in particular. Please let her stay calm, just for tonight let her sit and smile and play along, and let the night pass, and let everything go back to normal.

Let her not do anything brave.

It was a foolish thing to ask. She knew that. She had seen her daughter’s face when she said I need those files. She knew exactly what kind of woman she was, and she was proud of every inch of her.

But a mother could pray.
