The Mafia King of Philadelphia: From witness to his doted wife

The phone buzzed once against the table.

It was a small, dull sound, but Viktor heard it at once. He had not been asleep. He had only been lying still, with Sienna’s head on his chest and her breath slow against his shirt. He had been counting the seconds between her breaths the same way one counts steps on a bridge.

He did not move quickly. He did not want to wake her.

Slowly, he slid his arm out from under her shoulders and set a pillow where it had been. Sienna frowned in her sleep and turned toward the warm space, and then she settled again. Her hand curled around the edge of the pillow.

Viktor stood. He took the phone from the table and walked to the window, where the last of the light was fading to purple. The white curtains moved against his arm.

An email.

There was no name in the sender line, only a string of numbers and letters that meant nothing to anyone else. The subject was empty. The message inside was short, and it was written in code.

To another man, it would have looked like nonsense. A list of weather reports. A shipment of tea, delayed at a port. Viktor read it once and knew every word.

Marcus. Arrived. Middle East. Men gathered. All in place. Waiting.

His face did not change.

He had spent years learning to keep it still, in rooms where one twitch could cost a life. But inside, something in his chest loosened by one small notch, like a knot being eased.

He had sent them quietly a handful of men at a time, on different flights, with different names and different stories. He had told no one. Not even Sienna, though that had been the hardest choice of all.

He read the message one more time, to be sure. Then he deleted it. He cleared the trash and wiped the history, and he held the phone for a moment in his palm.

He did not reply.

He did not need to. That was the point of a message like this. It was not a question. It was a door held open. Marcus would not expect an answer. He would wait, with the men beside him, as long as it took. Days, weeks, a year. If Viktor never called, they would simply stay there and wait.

But if something happened, one word from him would be enough. He nodded to himself, once.

Standby. Behind him, in the dim room, Sienna stirred.

Viktor slipped the phone into his pocket and turned around. She had rolled onto her back, and her face looked younger in the half-dark. One hand lay open on the white sheet, palm up.

He looked at that hand for a long time.

Then he went back to the bed and lay down again, careful, quiet. He drew her against his side, and her head found his shoulder as if it had always known the way.

Outside the window, the house began to wake. Distant footsteps, soft voices, a door closing somewhere downstairs. The staff was setting the long table. Soon the guests would come.

Soon, the worst. Viktor stared at the ceiling and held his wife. Let it come, he thought. I am ready.

The knock was soft, but it was enough.

Viktor’s eyes opened first. For one blank second, he did not know where he was. The ceiling was white, the light was dim, and there was a warm weight against his chest. Then it all came back, and his hand tightened on Sienna’s shoulder.

They had not planned to sleep. They had only meant to rest, wrapped in each other’s arms, while the sky turned dark. But the weight of the day had been too heavy, and their bodies had given in without asking.

It had been a short nap. Still, it had been good. His head felt clearer, and the ache behind his eyes was gone.

Sienna stirred beside him and let out a small sound. ”Young madam.” A voice came through the door. It was a woman’s voice, polite and careful.

”Please. The dinner has started. The Don wants you downstairs.”

Neither of them answered.

They did not move. They only lay there, listening, and Viktor watched the door as if he could see through it.

After a moment, there were footsteps. They went down the hall, soft and slow, and then they were gone.

”What time is it?” Sienna asked.

She pushed herself up and rubbed her face with both hands. Her hair was a mess. The room was dark except for the lamp, and she could hear something under the silence now, something she had not noticed before.

Voices. Far away, many of them. Glasses clinking. And under it all, a slow, low song, played by a string band somewhere on the ground floor.

The party had already begun, and it was waiting for her. Viktor reached for the phone in his pocket. The screen lit his face blue.

”Nine thirty.” He looked at her. He did not say Are you sure or you should rest more. He knew she would hate that. But his eyes asked it anyway.

”How are you feeling now?” he said instead. ”Are you up for it?” Sienna took a breath. She checked herself the way you check a bag before a long trip. The nausea was quiet. It was still there, but it was a whisper now, not a shout. Her head was clear.

”I’m good,” she said. She got out of bed and went to the bathroom.

Water ran in the bathroom for a long time.

When they came out, both of them wore soft white robes from the hooks behind the door. Sienna’s hair was wet and dark against her neck. Viktor’s was pushed back, and a few drops still fell from the ends.

The room was waiting for them.

The rack of gowns stood where the maid had left it, white and silent. On the bed lay a suit, and Viktor looked at it. It was white too. Someone had pressed it and laid it out with the sleeves spread, like a person lying down.

Even for me, he thought. Even my clothes are his. He did not touch it yet. Neither of them said anything.

Sienna stared at the dresses. Viktor stared at the suit. The silence stretched, and then they both let out a deep breath at the same time. It was almost funny.

”Let’s do this,” Sienna said.

She went through the rack quickly.

She did not want to look at them. She slid the hangers one by one along the rail, and the silk hissed like water. Beads, lace and a long train with a neck cut too low. She wanted none of them.

At last, near the end, she stopped. It was a simple gown, long and plain, with a high neck and no beads at all. It was the quietest thing on the rack.

She took it down and went behind the screen.

When she came out, the dress fell around her in straight, soft lines. It was white as snow, and it did not shine. It was not a princess’s gown. It looked more like something a woman might wear to a funeral and survive.

She walked to the table where the jewels lay on their velvet trays.

She looked at them for a long time. The pearls, the silver chains and the rings. Each one was worth more than most people earned in a year, and she did not want a single one. They felt cold even from far away.

At last she picked up a pair of small diamond earrings and a thin bracelet. They were the plainest things on the tray. She did not put them on because she liked them. She put them on because it was easier than a fight.

She stopped in front of the tall mirror. Behind her, Viktor was getting dressed. She could hear the soft whisper of the shirt, the click of buttons, the creak of leather as he sat to pull on his shoes. She did not turn around.

She lifted her hand and slid the first earring into place. Then she reached for the second. And she paused. Her eyes had caught something in the glass.

She lowered her hands. She leaned in. Her face was very close to the mirror now, close enough that her breath made a tiny cloud on the surface.

She looked at her own eyes.

She had done this a hundred times, in class, with a penlight and a partner. Look at the pupil. Look at the white of the eye. Look at the little lines of red. She knew what each one could mean. She knew what a doctor would write down.

Her pupils were fine. Maybe. The whites of her eyes were not as white as they should be. And the tiny veins, the thin red threads she was trained to look for, were in the wrong places. Her heart skipped.

It was only one beat. One small stumble, like a foot missing a stair. But she felt it, and she knew it was real, and she knew it was not the first. She leaned closer again. Her breath caught.

No, she thought. It is the light. It is only the light. But the light was warm and gentle, and it was not lying.
