Chapter 263: Chapter 155: Entry, Identity, Useless Teammate

In the beginning, this world was a normal world, somewhat like the Federation, where people of various Races lived in relative peace and prosperity.

However, everything changed after some Kingdoms began to flourish.

A dark wave appeared in the sky, clearly warning everyone that horrible things would happen if they didn’t obey it.

At that time, the civilization on the continent named Celestial Ridge was at its peak, so naturally, people paid no heed to such things.

Especially the dominant Rexin Kingdom on the continent at that time, whose King led by completely ignoring this order; not even waiting for nightfall, a terrifying wave began to circulate.

In a matter of a day, half of the citizens of this massive nation of millions were dead.

This act terrified numerous countries, and at that time, nearly every existing entity knelt down and submitted to that wave.

Because this Power was so immense, they couldn’t see any opportunity for rebellion.

And it was from then onwards, this world became a plaything of the Rules.

The tasks people received every day varied; perhaps it was to deliver food to someone, dance a brief performance, or become a steward somewhere.

The entire continent adapted very quickly.

People referred to the Rules as Night because everyone had to sleep once night fell, and once asleep, nobody retained consciousness; dreams could not be controlled, much like this Bizarre game.

Every entity attempting to resist died amidst some strange Powers, perhaps being killed by Monsters or vanishing inexplicably.

Celestial Ridge was utterly trapped within a game orchestrated by some terrifying existence.

This complete dominance lasted for a long time, to the point where people were about to become accustomed to such control.

Yet at some moment, this control shifted; it began to destabilize, and individuals emerged within the world who could go unnoticed by the Rules, living quite exuberantly in this world as if they were players in a game.

However, five years ago, the anomaly re-emerged, the Rules once more began to shroud the entire world.

Some special zones also began to appear, where the world seemed to revert to its original state before the arrival of the Rules, although their ability to ignore the Rules remained intact.

Baiyi’s gaze flickered as he regained consciousness, feeling a bit resigned at his current status as a prisoner, with a quite hefty crime hanging over him.

His identity is tied to those squads defying the Rules, teams committed to saving the world and restoring it to its state prior to the emergence of the Rules.

They began forming hunting squads, collectively known as the Dawn Squad, heralding the Light breaking through the Night, eventually ushering in Dawn.

These Dawn Squads grew in number, exploring these special zones and discovering the punishments triggered by the Rules; it seemed like they couldn’t be directly punished by the Rules, only killed by Monsters and such.

From hunting to encircling, from triggering the Rules to engaging with them, through repeated trials, some secrets of the Rule Zones were uncovered, and the Rules within these Rule Zones vanished due to their hunts.

They saw more hope, trying to become the saviors of this world.

And Baiyi currently held the identity of someone attempting to resolve the issues in Night Town, but due to a teammate’s blunder, he was captured as the Dawn Squad leader.

Now it seems like... he’s a death row inmate about to be executed.

Step step... step step...

Steady footsteps echoed, Baiyi sank into thought, slowly closing his eyes.

Step step... step step....

The footsteps drew near, but they weren’t coming towards Baiyi, stopping instead at a cell not far from him.

Clink clank~ clang... clang...

The sound of chains dragging broke the surrounding silence.

Ring~

A subtle sound rang out, Baiyi continued contemplating his identity with his eyes closed.

”Captain, how should I rescue you? Moser is already dead.”

A low voice emerged, laden with guilt.

Baiyi paused, and as the last scene unfolded, he opened his eyes somewhat helplessly, gazing at the guilt-ridden young girl squatting beside him.

This was Baiyi’s troublesome teammate.

Yeah, the person dragged out to be executed earlier was his teammate too, reducing the five-member squad to four; aside from this troublesome one,

One fairly reliable teammate had already stabilized within Night Town, another had not entered Night Town, staying outside as reinforcements.

They communicated discovered Rules using the world’s unique methods, enhancing the chances of success.

Although quite problematic, this teammate was really capable, infiltrating tightly guarded prisons quietly, always managing to turn adversity into safety.

However, she was somewhat dull-witted, occasionally dropping the ball, leading Baiyi to suspect she had a knack for absorbing fortune.

If it weren’t for him assuming her original identity this time, the entire team would have again succumbed to her blunders...

Yes, again.

Because the reason Baiyi found this one and recruited her as a teammate was that her previous squad was completely wiped out.

Through understanding over time, it turns out his present Dawn Squad is her sixth team.

The previous five teams had all ended with her as the sole survivor.

Buzz~

A faint vibration sounded, after a couple of crunches, the chains binding Baiyi’s limbs shattered.

He stood and moved his limbs, saying calmly, ”It’s fine, Lilia, you’re still quite useful. Let’s go, we’re getting out.”

Lilia paused, wide-eyed, and asked, ”Captain, you could actually free yourself, so why earlier...?”

Baiyi glanced at her, causing her to immediately zip her mouth, obediently trailing behind him.

Wasn’t he just watching the memory scene just now? Who’d have known it was a teammate, and he’d be dispatched so quickly.

”Umm, Captain, let me lead you out. There are plenty of Night Cultists outside.”

Lilia hesitated a little.

In this world, those mysterious beings upholding Rules are known as its cultists, and hunting squads like theirs need to be chased by these cultists.

Because they’ve grasped too many evasion techniques, the Rules found it difficult to kill some Powerful squads.

”Just follow, how’s your mission coming along?” Baiyi lifted a leg, and boom!

With a resounding explosion, the wooden prison burst open.

Baiyi had entered an identity that didn’t require much thought, taking direct action was best.

At most, he’d slaughter everyone in Night Town to locate the World Core....

”Not bad, but I found something peculiar.” Lilia didn’t say much; her Captain, Gula, was always the squad’s muscle, leading the team out of dire situations multiple times, bossing great trust from Lilia.

Even if this Captain seemed a bit different now, it didn’t deter her reliance on the leader who pulled her out of despair.

Step step step....

Steps resounded at the prison’s end; this prison had three levels, and Baiyi was on the third. Apart from strong invisibility, there was only one way to reach the top: fight out.

”What peculiar place?” Baiyi produced a dagger, proceeding calmly.

Lilia trotted to keep up, whispering, ”I saw residents defying the directives of Night and that person didn’t face any punishment.”

”Moreover, I suddenly fell asleep and Moser’s death, I’m suspecting someone was interfering behind the scenes; normally, I wouldn’t fall asleep during missions, and Moser’s execution wasn’t even due until tomorrow.”

Baiyi paused, and the footsteps intensifying ahead imparted a sense of urgency.

”Have more Dawn Squads arrived?” Baiyi felt a growing sense of foreboding.

”No evidence, and Dawn Squads don’t attack each other.” Lilia was a bit distressed. ”Plus, I was following that resident breaking the Rules, but got noticed. Captain, you know, even you can’t detect my tracking, how could a regular resident notice me?”

The ominous feeling in Baiyi’s heart reached a peak, thinking he might... have been set up?

Grabbing Lilia’s shoulder, he spoke calmly, ”Lead me out.”

”Uh? Weren’t we fighting our way out?” Lilia was confused, but her body gradually turned transparent, leading Baiyi’s form to vanish from the prison as well.

And within three seconds of their disappearance, a large group wearing Faceless Masks stormed in, their presence chilling as they swiftly reached the innermost cell.

Only nothing remained there.
