...

The silence that followed her confession was heavy and profound. Diao Chan watched him nervously, afraid she had overstepped, afraid she had insulted his foresight, or worse, challenged his imperial prerogative. For a long moment, Lie Fan simply stared at her, absorbing the incredible depth of their foresight, the purity of their loyalty, and the sheer, staggering political intelligence of his wives.

They were not worrying about silk dresses or court gossip, they were anticipating a multi generational succession crisis based on the historical precedents of the Han Dynasty’s bloody consort kin wars.

Suddenly, the suffocating tension in the room was shattered.

Lie Fan threw his head back, and a loud, booming, joyous laugh erupted from his chest. It was not a mocking laugh, it was a laugh of pure, overwhelming relief, immense pride, and absolute adoration. The sound echoed warmly off the high ceiling of the pavilion, making the flames in the lotus lanterns dance.

Diao Chan blinked, entirely caught off guard by his reaction. ”My Husband...?”

Lie Fan finally caught his breath, his eyes crinkling with profound affection. He reached out and wrapped both of his large hands securely around hers, pulling them into his lap.

”Oh, Chan’er,” Lie Fan chuckled, shaking his head in absolute marvel. ”You, Yue’er, Ji’er, Qi’er, and Zhen’er... you are all far, far too brilliant for your own good. I am out there fighting our enemies, and my wives are in here playing succession chess a century into the future!”

He squeezed her hands reassuringly, the laughter fading into a look of absolute, unshakeable devotion.

”I understand your fear perfectly, Chan’er. It is a valid, historically accurate terror. The Han tore itself to bloody pieces precisely because Emperors allowed ambitious foreign consorts and their greedy families to poison the succession. But I need you to listen to me carefully, and I want you to carry my words back to Yue’er and the others tomorrow.”

Lie Fan leaned in close, his voice dropping to a solemn, unbreakable vow.

”Do not be afraid. I will not add another woman into this Harem.”

Diao Chan’s eyes widened, a fragile, tentative hope blooming in her chest. ”You won’t?”

”I won’t,” Lie Fan affirmed, his gaze locking onto hers with iron certainty. ”I have never treated my marriages as mere political currency as you all knew. I only added those that I truly love, those who captured my heart and earned my absolute respect. When I brought Zhen Ji into our home, I made a promise to myself and to all of you that she would be the last. My heart is full. My family is complete. I have no desire, no need, and absolutely no intention of bringing a stranger into our sanctuary.”

Diao Chan let out a shuddering breath, the crushing weight of anxiety that she and the other wives had been carrying for weeks finally beginning to lift. But her sharp mind, trained in the brutal realities of statecraft, still saw the logistical hurdles.

”But husband,” Diao Chan protested weakly, ”what of the diplomacy? When you conquer the northern tribes or the western kingdoms... their kings will offer you their daughters as tributes of submission. It is the way of the world. To refuse a political marriage is often seen as a rejection of their surrender, an insult that breeds immediate instability in the frontier provinces. How will you ensure the peace if you reject their blood?”

Lie Fan smiled, a cold, infinitely calculating light dancing in his eyes. The Emperor of Hengyuan was never caught without a strategy.

”I will say no,” Lie Fan stated simply. ”I will absolutely refuse their princesses for myself. The Dragon Throne is not a bed to be shared with hostages. However, I will not reject their offerings entirely, nor will I insult their surrender.”

He released one of her hands to gesture in the air, mapping out his political maneuver. ”If a foreign king offers me his most beautiful, highest status daughter, I will accept her on behalf of the empire, but I will have her married to someone in my court.”

Diao Chan’s brow furrowed slightly as she processed the brilliance of the move.

”Think about it,” Lie Fan explained, his voice thrumming with strategic excitement. ”I have a court filled with brilliant, unmarried young ministers and ferocious, loyal generals. Men who have bled for me and earned my absolute trust. If a powerful Xianbei chieftain offers his daughter, I will bestow her hand in marriage upon one of my most meritorious generals as a grand imperial reward.”

Lie Fan grinned, the perfection of his plan unfolding. ”It solves every problem simultaneously. It accepts the barbarian’s submission and ties their royal blood to the Hengyuan Dynasty, satisfying their cultural need for a blood alliance. It massively rewards my generals, binding their loyalty to the throne even tighter.”

”And, most importantly, it keeps the foreign bloodline completely separated from the imperial succession! The princess’s sons will be the sons of a general, not imperial princes. They will have no claim to Muchen’s throne, no royal title to rally a rebellion behind. They will be integrated into our nobility, neutralized as a threat, and utilized as a bridge.”

Diao Chan stared at him, her lips parted in sheer awe. It was a masterstroke. It neutralized the geopolitical necessity of political marriages while perfectly shielding the absolute purity and stability of the imperial succession.

”It is brilliant,” she whispered, her heart swelling with an overwhelming adoration for the man beside her. ”It is flawlessly brilliant.”

”As for the frontiers themselves,” Lie Fan continued, his tone shifting to the pragmatic realities of administration, ”they will not be held by fragile marriage pacts. They will be held by iron and ink. The frontier provinces will be garrisoned by my finest armies, and they will be governed by the most capable, incorruptible administrators Zhuge Liang can select from the Imperial Academy.”

Lie Fan reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind Diao Chan’s ear. ”I will not simply conquer and leave. We will build wagonways to connect them to the capital. We will introduce our laws, our currency, our agricultural techniques, and our education.”

”They will be incorporated and integrated slowly, methodically. In three generations, they will not see themselves as conquered barbarians, they will see themselves as proud citizens of Hengyuan. That is how you build a dynasty that lasts a thousand years. Not by filling a harem with ambitious hostages, but by elevating the people until they love the banner they live under.”

Diao Chan felt the very last remnants of her fear dissolve into nothingness, replaced by a profound, radiant peace. She looked at the man who held the world in his hands, realizing once again why she, and every other woman in the Harem Palace, would gladly lay down their lives for him.

He was not just a conqueror, he was a protector. He saw the traps of history, and he systematically dismantled them to ensure his family’s safety.

Without another word, Diao Chan surged forward, throwing her arms around his neck and burying her face against his chest. She held him tightly, her heart beating a rapid, joyous rhythm against his.

”I will tell Sister Ying Yue tomorrow,” Diao Chan whispered into his robes, her voice thick with happy tears. ”I will tell them all. They will sleep so peacefully knowing the future is secure. You are the greatest man the heavens have ever forged, husband.”

Lie Fan wrapped his strong arms around her slender frame, holding her close, resting his chin on the top of her head. The scent of jasmine and the warmth of her body anchored him, washing away the lingering coldness of the prisons and the heavy, bloody judgments of the day.

”I am only as great as the women who stand beside me,” Lie Fan murmured softly into the quiet, lantern lit room. ”Now, let us speak no more of empires, or successions, or warlords. The night belongs to us.”

He gently pulled back, looking into her dark, luminous eyes. The tea had cooled on the table, forgotten. Lie Fan lifted her effortlessly into his arms, carrying her away from the cushions and toward the soft, silk draped bedchamber, leaving the weight of the world outside the gilded doors where it belonged.

The delicate, lotus shaped lanterns in Diao Chan’s pavilion had long since burned out, leaving the room bathed in the soft, pearlescent glow of the early morning sun filtering through the silk window screens.

Lie Fan opened his eyes. The profound peace of the night still lingered, a rare and beautiful contrast to the heavy burdens that awaited him beyond the gilded doors.

He turned his head slightly on the silk pillow. Diao Chan was sound asleep beside him, her breathing slow and steady, a faint, contented smile touching her lips.

He watched her for a moment, his heart swelling with the deep, unshakeable devotion he held for the women who anchored his soul. Gently, so as not to wake her, he leaned over and pressed a soft, lingering kiss against her forehead.

Slipping silently from the bed, Lie Fan moved into the adjoining dressing chamber. He bypassed the ornate, heavily embroidered robes of state. Today’s task required the aura of a warlord, not an administrator.

He adorned himself in a tailored, practical martial tunic of dark crimson and black, fastening a wide leather belt around his waist. He left his heavenly halberd behind, he was going into the cramped confines of a subterranean prison, not a battlefield, but he strapped a plain, unadorned iron longsword to his hip. It was a subtle, psychological reminder of the absolute authority he carried.

Stepping out of the Harem Palace and into the crisp morning air of the main courtyards, Lie Fan was greeted by a familiar, deeply comforting sight.

Standing in perfect, silent formation were his Yellow Ghost Bodyguards. Their brief, unprecedented holiday was over. Liu Pi, Zhang Mancheng, Zhao Hong, Guan Hai, Zhou Cang, Gong Du, He Yi, Huang Shao, Guan Hai, and Pei Yuan Shao.

The heavy, suffocating grief of Bo Cai’s death had not vanished, but it had been tempered by the monumental, life altering honor of their new baronies and the precious time spent with their families. They struck their breastplates in unison as the Emperor approached, their eyes shining with a renewed, fanatical fire.

”It is good to see you back in the light, my brothers,” Lie Fan greeted them warmly, clapping Zhang Mancheng on the shoulder as a groom brought forward his massive warhorse, Pangu. ”Are you ready to walk into the dark?”

”We follow the Black Dragon to the Yellow Springs if commanded, Your Majesty,” Liu Pi answered gruffly, a fierce grin touching his scarred face.

Lie Fan swung up into the saddle. ”To the military prisons,” he commanded.

The ride from the Imperial Palace to the central military prison complex was short but heavily guarded. The prison itself was a massive, foreboding structure of dark, unyielding stone, built partially into the bedrock beneath the capital’s central garrison. It was a place designed to hold the nightmares of the empire.

As Lie Fan pulled Pangu to a halt in the fortified courtyard outside the main iron gates of the prison, he found a formidable welcoming committee already waiting for him.

Grand General Huangfu Song and Deputy Grand General Zhang Liao stood at the forefront, exactly as promised the night before. But flanking them were three figures that made Lie Fan raise an eyebrow in slight surprise.

Standing tall, their armor polished to a lethal shine, were the Silver Dragon Zhao Yun, the fierce Ma Chao, and the uncompromising Taishi Ci.

As Lie Fan dismounted, the five legendary commanders immediately dropped to one knee. ”We welcome His Imperial Majesty!”

”Stand up,” Lie Fan instructed, handing Pangu’s reins to a waiting guard. He looked at the three younger generals. ”I expected the two of you, but why are Zilong, Mengqi, and Ziyi here? Did the western borders suddenly collapse overnight?”

Zhang Liao stepped forward, his expression deadpan but his eyes betraying a profound, pragmatic caution.

”It is for your absolute safety, Your Majesty,” Zhang Liao explained respectfully. He cast a quick, entirely non insulting glance toward the Yellow Ghost Bodyguards. ”It is not that we doubt the legendary prowess of your personal guard. But having faced Xu Chu in the prison levels... we cannot take any chances.”

”The man is not a soldier, he is a siege engine made of flesh. Even bound in iron, he poses a catastrophic danger in enclosed spaces. We are here to ensure that if the Tiger Fool snaps his chains, there is enough physical mass in the room to put him down before he can even look in your direction.”

Lie Fan considered the logic. He remembered Zhang Liao’s report of Xu Chu tearing iron bars out of solid masonry with his bare hands. He nodded his head slowly, acknowledging the terrifying reality of the situation.

”I understand,” Lie Fan agreed. ”Your caution is noted and appreciated, Wenyuan. Since you are here, you will all follow me.”

He stepped closer to the assembled generals, his voice dropping to a low, commanding register. ”But heed my words carefully. We are not going down there to fight a battle. We are going down there to win a war of the mind. I want you to project absolute strength, but you are not to provoke them. You are my wall. Let me be the one doing the talking. Do you understand?”

”We hear and obey, Your Majesty,” the five commanders chorused, nodding their heads in perfect unison. With the absolute elite of the Hengyuan military forming a terrifyingly powerful escort, Lie Fan turned and walked toward the massive iron gates of the prison.
