Sun Ce was well aware of their actions, but he had been hesitant to reprimand them harshly. These men were not just his generals, they were his elders and mentors who had fought alongside his father, Sun Jian, and had played a crucial role in the Sun Clan’s rise to power. Sun Ce respected them deeply, and the thought of alienating them weighed heavily on his mind.

Zhou Yu, however, had no such reservations. As Sun Ce’s closest confidant and chief military strategist, he had been a vocal advocate for adhering to the agreement with Lie Fan, since he was afraid of the consequences of not adhering to it, especially since their army all was stationed in the east and south with nothing except the navy at the north.

He leaned forward, his sharp eyes scanning the room. ”My lords,” he said, his tone measured but firm, ”while I understand your concerns, we must not lose sight of the bigger picture. We already swear our allegiance to Lie Fan and it is not just a matter of convenience, it is a strategic necessity that everyone had agreed upon after a council meeting. Lie Fan’s support has been instrumental in our survival and growth. If we fail to uphold our end of the agreement, we risk jeopardizing our position.”

Sun Ce nodded, his expression thoughtful. ”Zhou Yu is right. We cannot afford to alienate Lie Fan. His resources, his army, his navy, and his influence are invaluable and also very powerful for us to face off. If we are seen as untrustworthy, it could have dire consequences for the Sun Clan.”

Cheng Pu frowned, his frustration evident. ”But at what cost, my lord? Are we to sacrifice our own strength and stability for the sake of our allegiance to him? Is it not enough with just our promise?”

Zhou Yu’s gaze hardened. ”It is not a sacrifice, it is an investment. By reducing our army to a more sustainable size, we can focus on quality over quantity. We can train our soldiers to be more efficient, better equipped, and more disciplined to defend our domain. And by maintaining our understanding and agreement with Lie Fan, we ensure that we have a powerful relation with him and the Sun Clan will hold a large position in his rank in the future when he unites the land under his banner.”

Han Dang crossed his arms, his skepticism clear. ”And what if Lie Fan decides to turn on us? What if he uses this opportunity to weaken us further and all of this allegiance matter was just a lie, so that he can attack us more easily?”

Sun Ce interjected before Zhou Yu could respond. ”Lie Fan has proven himself to be a man of honor. He has supported us in our darkest moments, and he has never given us reason to doubt his intentions. We must trust him in this matter, just as he has trusted us.”

The room fell silent, the weight of Sun Ce’s words hanging in the air. The veteran generals exchanged uneasy glances, their reluctance still evident but tempered by their loyalty to their lord.

Sun Ce took a deep breath, his tone softening. ”I understand your concerns, and I share them. But we must also consider the long term future of the Sun Clan. By aligning ourselves with Lie Fan, we ensure that our descendants will have a place in the world he is building, a big place under him. This is not just about us, it is about the generations to come.”

Zhou Yu seized the opportunity to drive the point home. ”And let us not forget that Lie Fan is watching. He has already allowed us to retain our navy at full strength, a concession that speaks volumes about his trust in us. If we continue to delay or obstruct the reduction of our army, we risk losing that trust. We cannot afford to test his patience.”

The generals exchanged another round of glances, their resistance slowly giving way to reluctant acceptance. Cheng Pu sighed, his shoulders slumping in resignation. ”Very well, my lord. If this is the path you have chosen, we will follow. But I hope you understand the risks we are taking.”

Sun Ce nodded, his expression one of gratitude and determination. ”I do, and I appreciate your loyalty and understanding. Together, we will navigate these challenges and ensure the Sun Clan’s continued prosperity.”

With the meeting concluded, Sun Ce felt a sense of relief but also a renewed sense of responsibility. The road ahead would not be easy, but he was confident that with the support of his advisors and generals, the Sun Clan would emerge stronger and more resilient. As he left the room, Zhou Yu fell into step beside him, his expression thoughtful.

”You handled that well, Bofu,” Zhou Yu said, his tone approving. ”But we must remain vigilant. The old generals may have agreed for now, but their reluctance could resurface if we are not careful and let our guard down.”

Sun Ce nodded, his gaze fixed on the horizon. ”I know, Gongjin. But I believe in them, just as I believe in you. Together, we will see this through, just like how we do it since we knew each other.”

Back in Xiapi, Lie Fan found himself in a rare moment of solitude. The demands of governance, domestic affairs, training and working out to keep his body fit, and family life had kept him so busy that he had neglected to search for technological advancement for far too long.

Today, however, he decided to carve out some time for himself. He retreated to his private study, a quiet room filled with scrolls, books, and the faint scent of ink and parchment.

On his desk lay his most treasured possession, the book of knowledge that he gained as a reward from the system, filled with knowledge, insights, inventions, and technologies that were far ahead of this time. It had been months even years since he last opened it, and he felt a pang of guilt as he brushed his fingers over its worn cover.

Lie Fan settled into his chair, the weight of his responsibilities momentarily lifted. He opened the book, its pages filled with diagrams, notes, and ideas that had once seemed like distant dreams but now felt like tangible possibilities.

His goal was clear, to find more technologies and techniques that could be implemented in this era, tools that could improve the lives of his people and strengthen his domain without requiring resources or knowledge that were beyond the reach of this time.

As he flipped through the pages, his eyes landed on an entry that immediately caught his attention, a nonmagnetic compass known as the south pointing chariot.

This ancient Chinese invention emerged during the later years of the Han Dynasty, and was a two wheeled vehicle equipped with a movable pointer that always indicated the south, no matter how the chariot turned.

Lie Fan’s mind raced with possibilities. Such a device would be invaluable for his army and navy, allowing them to navigate more efficiently, especially during long campaigns or voyages.

It would reduce the risk of getting lost and improve the coordination of his forces. He quickly grabbed a fresh scroll and began copying the schematics and instructions for constructing the chariot, his brush moving swiftly across the paper.

Once he finished documenting the south pointing chariot, Lie Fan continued his search. His next discovery was equally exciting, the blast furnace and cupola furnace. Other inventions, which had emerged during the later years of the Han Dynasty, revolutionized iron production.

The blast furnace allowed for the mass production of high quality iron, while the cupola furnace was used for melting and casting iron into tools, weapons, and other essential items.

Lie Fan knew that improving iron production would have far reaching implications, both militarily and economically. Stronger weapons and tools would give his army an edge in battle, while better agricultural implements would boost productivity and improve the livelihoods of his people.

Lie Fan spent hours meticulously copying the designs and techniques for these furnaces, his excitement growing with each stroke of the brush. He noted the types of materials needed, the construction process, and the operational methods. The potential impact of these technologies was immense, and he was eager to see them implemented.

But Lie Fan didn’t stop there. He delved deeper into the book, searching for more ways to improve his domain. He found entries on advanced glazing techniques for ceramics, which would enhance the quality and durability of pottery.

Improved weaving and dyeing techniques for textile production caught his eye next, promising to elevate the craftsmanship of fabrics and create new opportunities for trade. Lie Fan imagined the vibrant markets of Xiapi filled with beautifully dyed silks and finely woven textiles, their colors and patterns a testament to the skill and ingenuity of his people.

Next, he turned his attention to infrastructure. The book detailed improved techniques for building dams, canals, and irrigation systems, innovations that would transform agriculture and water management in his domain.

Lie Fan envisioned vast networks of canals crisscrossing the land, bringing water to arid regions and ensuring bountiful harvests. Improved irrigation would not only increase food production but also reduce the risk of famine, securing the well being of his people.

Finally, Lie Fan focused on metalworking. The book describes advanced techniques for iron production and bronze casting, methods that would allow his craftsmen to create stronger, more durable tools and weapons and intricate mechanisms.

He imagined his blacksmiths forging swords and armor of unparalleled quality, and his artisans crafting intricate bronze statues and ceremonial items. These advancements would not only strengthen his military but also elevate the cultural and artistic achievements of his domain.

By the time Lie Fan set down his brush, the sun had long since set, and the room was illuminated by the soft glow of oil lamps. His desk was cluttered with scrolls, each one filled with detailed notes, diagrams, and instructions.

He felt a sense of accomplishment, his mind buzzing with ideas and plans. It had been a long time since he had immersed himself in this kind of work, and he found it strangely invigorating.

The monotony of governance and paperwork had worn him down, but this, this was different. This was creation, innovation, the kind of work that excited him and reminded him of why he had come to this world in the first place.

Lie Fan leaned back in his chair, stretching his arms and letting out a satisfied sigh. He knew that implementing these technologies and techniques would not be easy. It would require resources, skilled labor, and careful planning.

But he was confident that the benefits would far outweigh the challenges. These advancements would not only strengthen his domain but also improve the lives of his people, and bring economic benefits as well. As he gathered the scrolls and prepared to leave his study, Lie Fan felt he should discuss these matters with Liu Ye and also began to look for other advisors who were experts in engineering, which could help Liu Ye alleviate the burden he had on him.
