Lu Xun nodded, his youthful face serious. Despite his age, he carried himself with the confidence of someone far older, and his eyes gleamed with understanding. ”Indeed,” Lu Xun replied, his voice steady. ”The chaos in the southern lands works to our advantage. While they bleed their armies dry fighting over territory, we strengthen ours. Lord Lie Fan has masterfully turned the ambitions of others into tools for his own gain.”

Wang Lang leaned back in his chair, stroking his beard as he considered the implications. ”It is not just about gaining territory or weakening enemies,” he said. ”Lord Lie Fan has created a narrative of legitimacy, framing himself as a protector of the people, while our enemies scramble for power. His ability to command both military strength and the hearts of the people is what sets him apart from other warlords.”

Lu Xun allowed himself a small smile. He had learned much in the year since Lie Fan had allowed him to graduate early from the academy, and this practical experience had opened his eyes to the true nature of power.

”From the Yellow Turban Rebellion to now,” Lu Xun said quietly, ”our lord has followed a path that mirrors the great founders of past dynasties. Qin Shi Huang, who unified the warring states through force and cunning, and Liu Bang, who rose from humble beginnings to establish the Han Dynasty. LordLie Fan’s rise is not just a matter of power—it is a matter of destiny.”

Wang Lang looked at the young man before him with renewed admiration. ”You speak with wisdom far beyond your years,” he said. ”It is rare to find someone so young with such an understanding of history and statecraft. If you continue on this path, I have no doubt that you will soon surpass even your grand uncle and soon replace him in his role as Special Governor of Lujiang.”

Lu Xun bowed his head humbly, though inside he felt a surge of pride. Wang Lang’s words were no empty praise. Over the past year, he had dedicated himself fully to studying the intricacies of governance and warfare, learning not just from books, but from observing the actions of Lie Fan and other great leaders of the time.

Every battle, every alliance, every subtle political move was a lesson, and Lu Xun absorbed it all like a sponge.

”I still have much to learn,” Lu Xun replied. ”But I will do everything in my power to ensure that Lujiang remains a stronghold for Lord Lie Fan. The future of this land depends on our ability to maintain stability here while our enemies weaken themselves through infighting.”

Wang Lang nodded in agreement. ”Lujiang has always been a critical region,” he said. ”Our position along the Yangtze River gives us control over vital trade routes, and our proximity to both the southern and central regions makes us a key player in the larger conflict. If we can hold Lujiang, we can control the flow of resources and influence the balance of power across the entire region.”

The two men continued their discussion late into the night, delving into the finer details of their plans for Lujiang’s defense and future growth. They discussed fortifications along the river, the training of new troops, and the need to secure alliances with the local gentry and merchant class.

Every decision they made was with the understanding that they were not just securing their own future, but that of Lie Fan’s burgeoning empire.

As the hours passed, the conversation shifted once again to the broader situation across the fractured empire. Lu Xun leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with insight. ”The southern warlords are distracted now, but we cannot afford to ignore the looming threats from the north. Yuan Shao and Cao Cao are both consolidating power, and it is only a matter of time before one of them turns their attention southward.”

Wang Lang’s expression darkened at the mention of the northern warlords. ”You are right to be concerned,” he said. ”Cao Cao, in particular, is a dangerous adversary. He has already taken note of our lord’s rise, and though he may be preoccupied with Yuan Shao for the moment, he will not allow Lord Lie Fan to grow unchecked.”

Lu Xun’s expression remained calm, though there was a flicker of tension in his eyes. ”Cao Cao is a formidable strategist, but he is also overconfident. He underestimates the strength of the southern regions, and he will not find it as easy to subdue us as he did the northern territories.”

Wang Lang chuckled softly. ”You speak with such certainty, Lu Xun. I admire your confidence, but we must be cautious. Cao Cao has managed to expand his land beyond the lands of our own, outside of the great walls where his resources are vast, and his influence runs deep in his domain after losing the Central Plains before.”

Lu Xun nodded, acknowledging the truth in Wang Lang’s words. ”Caution is necessary,” he agreed. ”But we must also be bold. If we allow ourselves to be paralyzed by fear of Cao Cao, we will never seize the opportunities before us. Lord Lie Fan understands this, which is why he moves with such precision. Every step he takes is calculated, every decision is carefully chosen.”

Wang Lang sighed, the weight of responsibility heavy on his shoulders. ”You are right, of course. We must strike a balance between caution and ambition. If we play our cards correctly, we may be able to position ourselves as the sole power in the land, putting a large pressure on both Yuan Shao and Cao Cao. But that will require not just military strength, but also diplomatic finesse.”

Lu Xun leaned back in his chair, his mind racing with possibilities. ”The key,” he said slowly, ”is to continue Fan’s manipulation in the south. Sun Ce, Liu Bei, and Shi Xie all have their own ambitions, but they can be useful to us in the short term. If we can keep them focused on their own struggles and present ourselves as a stabilizing force, we can consolidate our power without drawing too much attention from Cao Cao and Yuan Shao.”

Wang Lang raised an eyebrow. ”And how do you propose we do that, Lu Xun?”

Lu Xun’s smile was subtle, but there was a glint of mischief in his eyes. ”By offering them exactly what they want—security and stability. We can present ourselves as allies in their fight against internal chaos inside Jing and Jiaozhi Province, while subtly ensuring that they remain dependent on us for support. In time, like Lord Lie Fan’s current plan, the Sun Clan would surely swear their allegiance to us and when that happened, nothing could stop us from expanding in the south.”

Wang Lang chuckled again, shaking his head in admiration. ”You truly are a prodigy, Lu Xun. I have no doubt that you will rise to great heights in the service of our lord with this kind of foresight at your disposal.”

Lu Xun bowed his head once more, though his mind was already racing ahead, thinking of the next steps they would need to take. He had long admired the great strategists of history, men like Zhang Liang and Sun Tzu, who had shaped the course of empires with their wisdom and cunning. Now, he was determined to follow in their footsteps, to carve out his own legacy in the service of Lie Fan.

Meanwhile, to the south of Lujiang, within the Sun Clan’s domain, Sun Ce and Zhou Yu, accompanied by a small contingent of elite guards, were on a mission. For the past week, they had been searching the northern parts of the Sun Clan’s territory and even entered Lie Fan’s domain in Yang Province, all in pursuit of the elusive Qiao Clan residence. The journey had been arduous, filled with dead ends and false leads, but they pressed on, determined to find what they sought.

Their search was not without assistance. Lie Fan had provided help through his intelligence network, led by elite Oriole agents. Oriole’s network was renowned for its efficiency, and through it, Sun Ce and Zhou Yu had been given valuable clues as to the location of the Qiao family’s residence. These clues had brought them to a small town near the city of Wu, deep within Lie Fan’s territory.

As Sun Ce and Zhou Yu approached the town, they noticed something unusual—a buzz of excitement in the air. The town’s streets were bustling with activity, and as they asked the townsfolk about the Qiao Clan, they quickly learned why. A grand tournament was being held by Qiao Xuan, the head of the Qiao family, to determine the best suitors for his daughters, Da Qiao and Xiao Qiao.

Sun Ce and Zhou Yu exchanged glances, their thoughts aligned without the need for words. This tournament was their opportunity. They would participate, not only to win the favor of Qiao Xuan but also to meet the famous beauties Da Qiao and Xiao Qiao, who were said to be the most graceful and intelligent women in the land. Both men had heard rumors of the sisters’ beauty and talent, and now, fate had brought them to this moment.

With a renewed sense of urgency, they headed toward the large square where the tournament was being held. The square was packed with spectators, all eager to witness the contests. In the center, a raised platform had been constructed, where the competitors would showcase their skills.

Qiao Xuan, an older man with a regal bearing, sat in a grand chair overlooking the proceedings, while his daughters, Da Qiao and Xiao Qiao, sat beside him, veiled but still the focus of many admiring gazes.

Sun Ce’s heart quickened at the sight of the platform. He was a man of action, and tournaments were his natural element. Zhou Yu, though more reserved and strategic in nature, was equally determined. The two men quickly made their way to the registration area and applied to enter the tournament.

As they prepared themselves, Sun Ce couldn’t help but glance toward the veiled figures of Da Qiao and Xiao Qiao. He had heard tales of their beauty, but even from a distance, he could sense their presence. He felt a surge of determination rises within him—he would win this tournament, not only for his clan but for himself.

Zhou Yu observed the scene with a more analytical eye. The tournament was not just a display of physical prowess; it was a political game as well. Qiao Xuan was a man of influence, and gaining his favor could solidify the Sun Clan’s position in the region. Moreover, winning the hand of one of his daughters could create a powerful alliance between the Qiao and Sun families. Zhou Yu knew that this was as much a contest of wit and charm as it was of strength.
