As the discussion moved on to lighter topics, the women resumed their embroidery, but the thought of the future empress lingered in the back of their minds. Each of them knew that the question of succession, both within their household and in the broader political arena, would become increasingly important as Lie Fan’s power grew.

As silence reigned in the embroidery room, outside, the atmosphere was far more lively. Wannian and Sima Yi strolled together through the garden, enjoying the peace and tranquility of the moment.

The lush greenery and vibrant flowers provided a perfect backdrop for their quiet conversation, their footsteps barely making a sound on the well-tended paths.

A few handmaidens trailed behind them, a presence as unobtrusive as the rustling leaves, yet their watchful eyes missed nothing. These were not just any handmaidens; they were Oriole agents, specifically chosen by Lie Fan to keep an eye on his beloved sister.

Wannian, ever the bold one, had taken the initiative to hold Sima Yi’s hand, her fingers intertwining with his in a way that spoke of affection and unspoken promises. Sima Yi, though initially hesitant, had gently reminded her that such displays of affection might not be appropriate, especially with the handmaidens nearby who could easily report this to Lie Fan.

His concern was genuine, not out of fear of reprimand but out of respect for the propriety that governed their society, particularly because they were not yet officially engaged.

But Wannian, with the characteristic determination she shared with her brother, dismissed his concerns with a confident smile. ”They can report it if they like,” she said, her voice filled with a mixture of defiance and affection.

”Our engagement will be official in a few days, and I see no harm in showing our affection now. If my brother has any issues, he can take them up with me directly.” There was a glint in her eye that suggested she was more than capable of standing up to Lie Fan, a fact that Sima Yi knew all too well.

Sima Yi could only smile in return, his heart warmed by her words. Though he prided himself on his careful and strategic thinking, in this moment, he found himself willing to cast caution aside, if only to indulge Wannian’s wishes.

He understood that his feelings for her had perhaps clouded his judgment, but he also realized that this clouding was not something he minded. Being with Wannian, seeing her smile, was worth any potential consequence.

After all, he mused, it wasn’t as if he was engaging in something truly scandalous; holding hands with the woman he loved was a small rebellion against the strictures of their world.

The handmaidens, trailing behind, exchanged knowing glances. They had observed Wannian’s defiant streak before, and they knew that when it came to her, Lie Fan’s iron resolve often softened.

He might be the fierce and unyielding ruler to the outside world, but when it came to his sister, his heart was far more pliable. They could only smile wryly, knowing that their lord would likely forgive this small breach of decorum without a second thought, especially if it was what Wannian wanted.

Their peaceful stroll, however, was soon interrupted by the sudden arrival of Lie Fan’s children, Wannian’s nephews and nieces. Chenchen, Yaoyao, Yanyan, and Nuonuo burst into the garden like a whirlwind, their laughter echoing through the air as they rushed toward their beloved aunt.

The children’s energy was infectious, and their presence instantly shattered the quiet, serene atmosphere of the garden. They circled around Wannian and Sima Yi, their excitement palpable as they clamored for her attention.

Wannian could only smile wryly at the interruption, though there was no mistaking the affection in her eyes as she looked down at the children. They were her brother’s pride and joy, and she loved them dearly, even if they had a knack for disrupting moments of peace. Her apology to Sima Yi was unspoken but clear in the way she looked at him, a soft expression of regret that their quiet time together had been cut short.

Sima Yi, for his part, only smiled warmly at the scene. He had always admired the way Wannian interacted with children; there was a natural grace to it, a nurturing side of her that only enhanced her beauty in his eyes. ”It’s no trouble at all,” he assured her, his voice sincere. ”In fact, I enjoy seeing you with them. You look even more beautiful when you’re with the children.”

His words brought a flush of color to Wannian’s cheeks, her usual composure momentarily giving way to a shy smile. Despite her strong-willed nature, there were moments when Sima Yi could still catch her off guard, moments when his affection for her seemed to take her by surprise. It was a dynamic he cherished, the way their relationship balanced her boldness with his thoughtful, strategic mind.

The children, oblivious to the adults’ subtle exchange, continued to pull Wannian in different directions, eager to play and show her whatever latest game or trick they had devised. It wasn’t long before she was caught up in their excitement, her earlier contemplation of the future forgotten in the face of their innocent joy.

Sima Yi watched her with a fond smile, content to stand back and observe. In the chaotic world they lived in, moments like these were rare and precious. It was in these quiet, personal interactions that he found solace, a reminder of what they were all fighting to protect. The laughter of children, the love of family—these were the things that truly mattered, even in the grand scheme of war and politics.

As Wannian played with her nephews and nieces, her laughter mingling with theirs, Sima Yi felt a deep sense of contentment. This was the life he wanted to build with her, a life filled with love, family, and the simple joys of everyday moments.

The thought of their impending engagement only solidified his resolve. He would do everything in his power to ensure that they could enjoy such moments together for many years to come, no matter what challenges lay ahead.

In the blink of an eye, several days passed, and the much-anticipated day of Sima Yi and Wannian’s engagement finally arrived. The chosen date, selected by the monks for its auspiciousness, was perfectly timed just a week before the new year.

This date was not only significant on both Wannian and Sima Yi’s personal calendars but also marked a momentous occasion for their families, representing a union that promised both happiness and long-lasting stability.

The Lie Clan estate was transformed into a vibrant spectacle of celebration. Every corner was adorned with red lanterns and banners, symbolizing good fortune and joy.

The colors of festivity were not only meant to signify a happy occasion but also to invoke blessings and prosperity for the couple. The estate’s expansive grounds were lined with elaborate decorations, and the air was filled with the mingling scents of flowers and incense, enhancing the atmosphere of anticipation and excitement.

The Sima Clan’s entourage arrived with much grandeur, a testament to their dedication and respect for the occasion. Sima Yi, accompanied by his older brother Sima Lang, led the procession, their arrival marked by the impressive sight of two wagons heavily laden with luxurious gifts and treasures.

These wagons, brimming with finely crafted fabrics, precious metals, and other valuable items, represented nearly 75% of the Sima Clan’s wealth. This considerable expense reflected the importance of the engagement, highlighting the Sima Clan’s commitment to forging a lasting alliance with the Lie Clan. The investment was understood to be not merely a transactional gesture but a strategic move to secure a prominent future and strengthen their familial ties.

As the entourage reached the grand entrance of the Lie Clan estate, the atmosphere buzzed with activity and anticipation of the ceremony. Lie Fan stood at the forefront of the reception, flanked by his wife Ying Yue, his father Lie Shang, and his mother Yu Yan. The entire family was dressed in their finest ceremonial attire, reflecting the gravity of the occasion and the honor they placed on the union of their families.

Lie Fan greeted Sima Yi and Sima Lang with a formal and respectful nod, his demeanor a mixture of stoic authority and familial warmth. This was a crucial moment for him, as it marked not only the formalization of his sister’s engagement but also the solidification of a significant alliance. His gaze, though measured, revealed a deep sense of satisfaction at the magnitude of the occasion and the careful preparations made by both families.

Following the initial greetings, the guests were led into the main hall of the estate, a space meticulously prepared for the ceremonial exchange. The hall was an impressive sight, with its high ceilings adorned with intricate woodwork and golden accents that gleamed under the soft glow of lanterns. The center of the room was dominated by a large, ornate table covered with silk cloths, where the formal proceedings would take place.

Sima Lang, representing his younger brother Sima Yi, began the engagement ceremony with a sense of dignified gravity. He approached the table, where a collection of scrolls and a ceremonial ledger were laid out. The dowry, presented in meticulously arranged boxes and elegantly wrapped parcels, was displayed prominently. Each item was a symbol of the Sima Clan’s respect and their intention to honor the union with the Lie Clan.

Lie Fan, with his characteristic poise, took his time to inspect the dowry. His scrutiny was thorough, reflecting both the importance of the gesture and his appreciation of the Sima Clan’s generosity. The sight of the lavish treasures and the evident effort put into the presentation moved him.

He recognized the sacrifice and commitment behind the dowry, knowing well the weight of the investment involved. This gesture was not just a display of wealth but a profound sign of goodwill and the earnestness of the Sima Clan’s intentions.

As Lie Fan concluded his inspection, he acknowledged the sincerity of the Sima Clan’s offerings with a nod of approval. His words, though formal, carried a note of gratitude and respect. ”The dowry presented by the Sima Clan is most impressive,” he said, his voice carrying the gravity of the moment. ”Your generosity and the care with which you have prepared these gifts honor both my sister and our family. We are deeply appreciative.”

Sima Lang, feeling the weight of the moment, responded with a respectful bow. ”We are honored to be a part of this union and grateful for the opportunity to align our families in such a meaningful way. Our hope is that this engagement will bring both our families prosperity and joy in the years to come.”

With the formalities of the dowry inspection complete, the ceremony continued with the exchange of engagement tokens, which included intricate jewelry and symbolic gifts representing each family’s heritage. These tokens were not just ornamental; they were imbued with cultural significance and intended to strengthen the bond between the two clans.

The atmosphere in the hall was one of solemn joy, as both families recognized the importance of the occasion. Lie Shang and Yu Yan, while maintaining their dignified demeanor, exchanged warm glances, clearly pleased with the outcome of the proceedings. Their approval was a crucial component in the successful formalization of the engagement, and their satisfaction was evident in their expressions.

As the ceremony drew to a close, the guests were invited to partake in a lavish feast prepared to celebrate the engagement. The dining hall, decorated with exquisite floral arrangements and elegant table settings, offered a sumptuous array of dishes that showcased the culinary skills of the estate’s chefs. The meal was not just a celebration of the engagement but also a reflection of the harmony and unity that the families hoped to achieve through this alliance.

Throughout the feast, laughter and lively conversation filled the air. Sima Yi and Wannian, now officially engaged, shared moments of joy and affectionate glances, their happiness palpable. The engagement brought together not only their families but also a sense of shared future and mutual respect.

Lie Fan, while maintaining his role as the host and guardian of the event, took moments to engage with Sima Yi and discuss the date of Sima Yi and Wannian marriage date.

As the evening drew to a close, the mood was one of contentment and anticipation. The engagement had been formalized with all the reverence and celebration befitting such a significant occasion. Both the Lie and Sima Clans were now united not only by marriage but also by a shared vision for the future.

The success of the engagement ceremony was a testament to the careful planning and heartfelt intentions of both families. It marked the beginning of a new alliance that promised to bring both personal happiness and strategic advantage. For Sima Yi and Wannian, it was the beginning of their journey together, one that would be filled with hope, challenges, and the enduring support of their families.
