Chapter 112: Chapter 82: I Often Feel Out of Place for Not Being Perverted Enough

”But...”

Kan Tianji sighed. ”This trip to the Northern Three Prefectures is a sign of great misfortune for him. If you go with him, even if you never see each other, you’ll be tainted by the disaster.”

Kan Luotang retorted, ”So I should do nothing just because I’m worried about disaster?”

Kan Tianji was silent for a moment before slowly rising to his feet. ”The way of heaven is to take from what has a surplus and give to what is deficient. The way of man is to take from the deficient and give to those who already have a surplus. By asking him to let this pill grant benefit the common people, you have violated the way of man. It will surely bring about a backlash...”

Kan Luotang smiled faintly. ”I’m the one who asked him to do it. That means the danger comes from me, so I have all the more reason to go.”

”But have you considered that even if these pills are distributed to the common folk, it will only alleviate their suffering temporarily? The Northern Three Prefectures is a vital region for suppressing the Five Elements Prison. The people there are destined to never rise above their station.

Yes!

One breath of life, a hundred illnesses cured.

But five thousand pills, as much as it seems, won’t even make a ripple among the more than one million people in the Northern Three Prefectures.

Five thousand pills are indeed enough for some people to live a little more easily.

But what about the next generation?

Will there be another ten thousand free pills for them to take?

How many people are struggling at the bottom in the Northern Three Prefectures? And how many of them can truly rise above it all?”

”But at least they’re struggling.”

”But this world has never been a place where enduring the bitterest of hardships makes you the best of men!”

Kan Tianji pointed at the pond. ”Just like them. Born in stagnant water, no matter how hard they strive, they can only struggle to the surface to gasp for air when the weather turns gloomy.

The gloomy sky doesn’t care if they can breathe, and they can never leap into a great river.

Because the great rivers are full of big fish. There’s simply no room for them to survive.

Besides.

This pool of stagnant water is too far away.

They don’t have the chance to leap into a great river!”

Kan Luotang lowered her gaze, seemingly moved. But after a moment, she looked up with a smile. ”But at least they still have the chance to come to the surface and breathe. We can’t just strip them of that chance simply because they live in stagnant water, can we?”

Kan Tianji’s eye twitched. ”But once you enter that stagnant water, you won’t even be able to protect yourself.”

”Not necessarily!”

Kan Luotang hugged Kan Tianji’s arm, wheedling, ”Grandpa! The people and officials of the Northern Three Prefectures all know me, and I know them. They don’t seem like the type to give us trouble over this. Besides, Zhao Ci is the Pill Granting Envoy personally appointed by His Majesty. Even if there’s danger, how dangerous could it be? Please just let me go!”

It wasn’t his granddaughter’s arguments that he feared, but her pleading.

Kan Tianji was so worried he felt he was going bald, but he was no match for Kan Luotang’s relentless pestering.

He could only nod.

Kan Luotang said, ”You’re the best, Grandpa!” then quickly ran out of the Kan Mansion, mounted the swift horse that had already been prepared, and rode straight for the Northern Three Prefectures.

「In the courtyard.」

Kan Tianji took a cracked Turtle Shell from his robes, his brow furrowing with worry.

The divination revealed three years of constant disasters, both large and small, making a peaceful end unlikely.

If Kan Luotang could stay far away and wait for Zhao Ci to die, the calamities would dissipate on their own.

And yet, that girl had gone and entangled herself with Zhao Ci.

Once their fates became intertwined, not even an Immortal could unravel them.

Of course, he wanted to stop Kan Luotang.

But he knew his granddaughter’s temperament. Although she had asked for his permission today, her bags and swift horse had been ready long ago. All her sweet talk just now was merely to give him, her grandfather, some face.

Even if he hadn’t agreed, she would have found a way to go to the Northern Three Prefectures.

Kan Tianji stood up and gazed in the direction she had left. He hesitated for a long time but ultimately decided not to chase after her.

’That girl is far too optimistic about human nature.’

’If this trip can shatter her illusions and make her retreat in the face of hardship...’

’...it wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing.’

’It’s just...’

Kan Tianji rubbed the cracks on the Turtle Shell, his brow knitted tightly. ”Who on earth would dare to involve a Prince in such a perilous situation?”
