Chapter 111: Chapter 82: I Often Feel I Don’t Belong with You Guys Because I’m Not Perverted Enough

’Poisoning *and* electroshock therapy? Who the hell can take that?’

’Part of Yang Mo’s golden wish is to overcome his fear, but how the hell is he supposed to overcome *this*?’

’Unless I chop his parents to bits for him, I really can’t see any other way to help him overcome this anytime soon.’

He was completely at a loss when dealing with lunatics caught in such a perfect circle of twisted logic.

Besides, this was their family’s business. It would be incredibly difficult for him to interfere.

Even if he used his status to force the couple to stop, they would most likely just pretend to obey. After all, Yang Mo had absolutely no will to resist.

’The second half of the wish was something about breaking free from a cocoon and emerging as a butterfly.’

’The problem is, this cocoon doesn’t feel like it’s made of silk.’

’It’s more like it’s made of rebar!’

’Damn it.’

’Unbelievable.’

Just then, Cen Xiu came over carrying a brocade box. She completely ignored Yang Mo, who was curled into a trembling ball, and looked at Zhao Ci with a beaming smile. ”Your Highness, these are fresh mushrooms. Mo told us you enjoy them, so my husband and I went out of our way to request an extra allotment from the clan.”

Zhao Ci: ”...”

’They used to come in a burlap sack, and now it’s a brocade box?’

Cen Xiu continued, smiling as she extended an invitation, ”Oh, by the way, Your Highness! We’ll be giving Mo his Thunder Strike Body treatment in a little while. We bought the Thunder Talisman Paper from a legitimate Thunder Cultivator—it cost my husband and me all our savings.

”This will be a perfect opportunity for you to see how Mo is turning his life around, one step at a time.

”This child is average in other respects, but he can endure immense hardship. As long as you put him to good use, he’s certain to accomplish great things in the mansion competition.”

Zhao Ci: ”???”

’What makes you think I want to watch electroshock therapy?’

He had been wondering why the couple was so insistent on demonstrating their bizarre method of ”training” their son to him.

But now he understood. This was, in no small part, a ploy to win his sympathy—to emotionally blackmail him into pouring more resources into Yang Mo down the line.

’I’ll definitely have to invest in him.’

But their methods made Zhao Ci physically ill.

’No wonder this is a golden wish. There’s no way I can solve this right now.’

He waved his hands dismissively. ”No, no! I still have matters to attend to. Thank you for the mushrooms, but I really don’t think the Thunder Strike Body treatment is necessary. I’ll be taking my leave!”

With that, he cupped his hands in a farewell gesture and left in a hurry. ’This wish definitely can’t be resolved in seven days,’ he thought. ’I’ll have to deal with it slowly after I get back from the Northern Three Prefectures.’

The couple watched Zhao Ci depart, both with gratified smiles on their faces.

They then sat down beside Yang Mo. Watching him twitch silently, their eyes filled with admiration and pride.

After a long while, Yang Mo woke up.

Cen Xiu smiled gently. ”Mo, you don’t blame your father and me, do you?”

Yang Mo looked at her eager expression and couldn’t help but shudder. ”I don’t!” he said weakly.

Cen Xiu sighed wistfully. ”Only by enduring the bitterest of hardships can one rise above the rest. You didn’t believe it before, but look at you now. You’re a Mansion Official in the Tenth Prince’s Mansion. Your father and I were right, weren’t we?”

Yang Mo nodded quickly. ”You’re right! What Father and Mother did was right!”

Cen Xiu sighed softly. ”I know it wasn’t good to embarrass you in front of His Highness, but it’s the only way for you to gain the attention you deserve. When the time comes for the mansion competition’s resources, you must fight for everything you can get!”

”Yes...”

”Husband! Go get the Jade Toad.”

”Alright!”

A moment later, Yang Fang returned with a Jade Toad. It was covered in a frosty white sheen, its skin bumpy and uneven.

Cen Xiu caressed Yang Mo’s face. ”Mo! Be a good boy. Lick the Jade Toad’s secretions, and then we’ll do the Thunder Strike Body treatment!”

Yang Mo: ”...”

He couldn’t help but shudder.

The pain from the Jade Toad’s secretions was no less than that of the strange poison he had just swallowed.

Combined with the Thunder Strike Body, it was said to maximize the strength of one’s Flesh Soul.

’But the pain...’

Seeing his fear, Cen Xiu grew angry. ”Is it painful? It’s supposed to be! Do you have any idea how many people in this world would kill for a chance to trade pain for power but have no way to do so? The poor who lack silver and gold, the noble children with terrible talent—do you think they don’t suffer?

”You! You at least have the chance to endure the bitterest of hardships in exchange for becoming someone great!

”Others don’t even get that much!

”Your father and I have spent every last coin we have on resources for you!

”You can’t let us down!”

Yang Mo trembled uncontrollably. His body had long since memorized the pain, and just the thought of it was enough to make the scene replay in his mind.

But he felt that Cen Xiu had a point.

’If enduring the bitterest of hardships truly guaranteed one’s rise to the top, then surely everyone in the world would be champing at the bit to suffer.’

’But where could one find such a good deal?’

’Even if you only gained one part of reward for ten parts of suffering...’

’...that would already be a tremendous blessing!’

So, he gritted his teeth and gave a heavy nod.

...

「Kan Mansion.」

Kan Tianji was dozing, half-reclined in a chair by the edge of a pond.

Dressed in a simple white cotton skirt and carrying a travel pack, Kan Luotang stood quietly behind him.

Ripples continuously disturbed the surface of the pond.

But not because a fish had taken the bait.

The weather had been muggy all day, and the fish, struggling to breathe, had long since surfaced to gulp at the air.

For a long time, Kan Tianji kept his eyes closed, and Kan Luotang did not move.

Finally, Kan Tianji couldn’t hold back any longer. ”My dear granddaughter, must you really go to the Northern Three Prefectures?”

”Yes, Grandpa!”

Kan Luotang smiled. ”It’ll be late autumn soon. With plagues, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Now is the perfect time to go to the Northern Three Prefectures. Besides, with Zhao Ci bringing the Emperor’s Gift Pill, he’ll be able to provide immense help. Please, Grandpa, just let me go!”

Kan Tianji scratched his graying hair in frustration. ”Didn’t I tell you to avoid arousing suspicion? If you go...”

”Zhao Ci says that if you walk a straight path, you have no need for tactful self-preservation. Besides, we’ll be working on different things. We might not even see each other when we get there.”
